A nice 1929-S Buffalo nickel--care to grade it?

Not my best shot at imaging, but you get the idea.
In hand, the luster is more shimmering and irridescent than seen here. Nice steel-gray coloring. It looks terrific...

    Nice 64.

looks very clean save for some skruff on the knot.

    Another extremely nice example.

my pychologic evaluation of Guy's purchase backfired on me this time because of an error on MY behalf.

Even though the title, and the coin also, has a big "S" in and on it, I could have SWORN it was a "D" mint.

The coin pictured is a lock 65 (that was my judgement before looking it up in the price guides), then I saw the mistaken "D" mint '29 Buff price was $2000, and decided I would go 64 on this particular one relying on my pychoanalysis. WHICH WAS WRONG, but sometimes I'm dead on, sometimes.

Not saying Guy couldn't afford a MS65 '29-D (Lord knows he's probably got stacks of 'em), but my assumptions got the best of me on this one, thus reslting in a lower grade for a particular (mistaken) date/mm.

Sorry Guy. Like I said before, and extremely nice coin.

I don't know Guy, that color looks a bit funky to me, especially in the recesses. Plus, I've never seen a Buffalo grade with that sort of toning before.

I'm bodybagging that one for artificial color. image

I throw the dart and come up with MS65, just missing the 66 space a leeeetle to the right. image

I don't know if it's just the photos, but it looks so reflective that it could be mistaken for a proof at a glance. Unless there is a hidden carbon spot or hairlines, I say MS66 minimum, and MS67 may be reasonable.

According to my past record in grading your coins I've always been at least a point too high. So I'm gonna say it's MS64, even though that is a GORGEOUS coin that looks like it'd merit a MS66. image

Nah. The color is more mild than in the pix. From my experience, AT buffs have color that is more, for lack of a better word, "ambitious."

A very well struck piece, Guy, and an early die state. 1929 was the year for the San Francisco Mint with buffs, and they made a lot of great pieces. 1929-31 all have similar character of strike, with a noticeable absence of detail just above the hair knot. Gorgeous toning, veritably mark-free, and your description of the luster makes the coin appear to be a 66, but with some possibility of a 65 due to the minor tic marks on the rim, neck, and the plain below the bison's feet. Excellent coin.

Guy, I'm at home, the monitor isn't the best, but I see a coin has purplish toning. Steel blue and ice blue is fine; I have a 38 D with ice blue centers & have seen a number of Uncs. with steel blue toning.

But am I right re the purple? I certainly hope not. The last purplish toned Nickel I was was a pedigreed Liberty Nickel in a first tier slab (graded MS 66) that I am certain was heat-treated.

Re wear / ticks, etc., this appears to be one clean coin. If toning is not an issue, I'd be surprised if it isn't in a 6 holder. It has been my experience that the services will bump the grade of an attractively toned Buff. My 38 D is a technical 6, but is in a 7 holder because of its amazing toning.

    64, but color seems funny

Elcontador, purple is fine. Purple can be good. Here's a 1920 that was in an OGH before I cracked it out. It certified again when I later resubmitted it.
Shamika, I believe you voted that this 1920 was AT also. In any case, nothing about the 1929 looks suspicious to me.

Alright Guy, if you believe the color looks natural in-hand, I'll take your word for it. Solid MS65. image

Maybe I should dip the color off it?image

  • Another outstanding Buff from Guy. You da man!

I agree with Hoot about how nice 1929s come from all three mints. Often they have mirror finishes with near-full strikes.

I'll jump out there with a 66. Very clean and well-struck.
