Need ideas to Solve this ebay problem

Seems like trouble finds me lately.

Item number: 130159408320

I have had this constant problem with this one jerk on ebay. For the most part, he and I are the only two that chase raw hi-grade 1971 Topps coins. He can not outbid me so he constantly contacts sellers and gets many to end their auctions early which has we all know is against ebay policy. I have notified ebay but the problem keeps happening. He has the number one set in the registry only because he has stolen so many auctions from me. It has got to the point that every time there is an auction for these I contact the seller and ask them not to end the auction early and tell them that this one particular person keeps contacting the sellers of these coins. I have had many good sellers respond to me that he has already contacted them. Well anyway I saw an auction this morning. I sent an email to the seller like I always do. Apparently the person had already contacted the seller. The seller accidently replied to my e-mail thinking he was responding to the other guy. Here is the e-mail.

"I'm trying, but no success. When I get to the "end auction early" bit, there's no way to click on it, and no instructions. I need further help. My email is jbkessinger@comcast.net. Please advise yours.
Berry"

This seller actually brags of his 100% rating.

Any ideas how to solve this?

  • Threaten physical violence to the guy contacting the sellers. If that doesn't work actually go through with the threats. image

  • By ending the auctions early, technically the sellers do not have to close the deal with that guy. Start playing the 'I was planning on maxxing my bid out at ...' angle with the sellers. It may cause him to pony up more and stop his actions. He should get the message after a couple of sellers reneg on the deals with him...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

  • be careful of threatening someone and be even more careful if you go through with it. I would never do anything like the person is doing to you and your auctions. But if a ebay person actually threatened me with violence I would be more than happy to meet them and give them a beating... I like to fight............

yes it's against ebay policy but making off ebay deals happens all the time. not much you can do accept join him by making your own off ebay deals or wait until another ones comes around and hopefully since he already has that coin you can get the next one for less money since he may not be in the picture

That's absolutely right! You have two choices. Beat him to the punch and try to deal offline before the other guy does or wait it out and you might get it cheaper.

Violence is not going to solve the problem but exposing him might help. It is a different seller every time but is always the same person contacting them. Several sellers that did not close their auctions have all said he contacted them to close their auction.

  • While what he is doing is unethical, it's not wrong or eBay wouldn't allow it. Yes, they frown on it, but yet they do allow it. I think exposing him by his real name and user name is WRONG! Again, he has done nothing wrong. If anybody has actually done anything wrong it would be the sellers for ending the auctions early. All he is doing is asking and it never hurts to ask.

It's a dog eat dog world. If someone wants something bad enough, they will do whatever it takes to get it, bottom line. Question is....as this may be against ebay policy, is it wrong for a seller to end an auction and sell an item outright? It's still their property to do what they want with the item. I guess it boils down to business ethics...but most sellers on ebay are not in actual business. I can see this as a back and forth debate.

Nick, Guess you never worked hard on a set in the registry. Maybe you should walk a mile in my shoes before you start the name calling. Bet you would feel different if you did. The registries create competition and this guy is a cheater.

Also I do believe contacting a seller to end an auction early is very much against ebay policy. At least that is what ebay told me when I talked to them on the phone.

These are tough to find in high grade condition. This is suppose to be a hobby not a contest in dishonesty.

My shoe size is 10 1/2, how about you?

As a reputable CU member has already told you, when it comes to our community, you add nothing and help no one. Go rant, whine, and complain somewhere else because it's really getting old. In fact, when I see your name attached to a thread, I know that there is a zero chance that anything positive will be waiting within.
  • You should probably contact the registry and make them aware of his cheating and they will probably remove his sets and you will be number one.

  • mbothnermbothner Posts: 763 ✭✭✭

I know you are just giving me a hard time. I thought I would get more support from fellow honest collectors but seems I am wrong. Maybe I take collecting too seriously but I am not going to be dishonest to get ahead.

Nick, I thought this was a place to discuss issues? Why do you attack me when I bring up a valid discussion. As you can see in this thread what others have said. Has these problems ever happened to you?
  • Although I have not asked a seller to end an auction early, nor have I ended an auction early I think saying that the guy is cheating might be stretching it. You are just pissed off because he got the coin and not you, no need for name calling. If you saw an automobile in the classifieds that you wanted, called the owner, and then went to look at it and when you got there he had already sold it would you call the buyer a cheater? Against ebay policy or not, the coin belongs to the seller and if he gets an offer that he is happy with it is his right to accept it and end his auction. Ebay only has that policy in place to cut down on the number of people trying to circumvent the final value fee, it is not there for the bidders.

If they were more available then that would be the perfect solution. I can be outbid and it happens plenty. I am just willing to pay more for these particular items then most. The seller probably did not even know what he had. He listed in his auction that the book value was $39. I set an esnipe over $100.

  • So if you buy coins from a local dealer that your nemesis doesn't have access to does that make you a cheater? Not to be a jerk but you are way to worked up over this.By the way PM me I know a dealer who just came in to a good number of these,I will give you his email address.

They really should make that a built-in emoticon. It would be so much easier to put : popcorn; in there (without the space, therwise it would be imageopcorn; ).

But I guess that would promote drama and you know what happens when a flame war starts.

I have always thought this was a dishonest thing to do but seems most other collector's are fine with this. I guess I stand corrected.
  • I think its pretty shady, and I would be pissed too. But you are taking it too far by calling it cheating and not considering his set #1. By saying things like that you are coming across as being childish.

I'll tell ya one thing that's interesting.

I just checked the registry for 71T coins - and NOT one person has a single scan of any coin?

For me, the problem with the registry seems to be that - for some - the chase is greater than the enjoyment in the items, as such.

On the guy who's making the requests?

It's the sellers that are ending the auctions, not the requestor - unless the guy is stockpiling EVERY hi grade coin, I say life's short - let it go and wait for another.

I gotta a better chance of finding a diamond up a goat's ass than getting ebay to stop this kind of crap.

  • Where are they finding these new members. Are they bringing them in by bus from some strange land? It seems like every goofy post or reply is from some new member that joined in the last 2 months. Some people seem to join just to post complaints and cry about their problems.
