My conversation with the fedex man...

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭✭✭
When the Fedex driver dropped off my Jeff's yesterday he seemed nice enough and I asked him if he had "A lot of these" boxes to deliver. He said he had about 10 and asked me if they were some cell phone promotion. I told him, "No, gold coins from the mint" When I saw the look in his eye I quickly added that these were going to the SDB right away...

Hope those other boxes got delivered ok.....

  • Way to go. You may want to call Fed Ex on Monday and see if that driver still works there. Maybe he took a permanent vacation after your conversation.

As long as he stays in Utah... I should be ok..... not sure about any of your future deliveries though...

  • Nice going.Fed-ex hires a lot of part timers who really don't care if they have that job or not.Now word of mouth may let all the drivers know what is in those packages.image

    Utah:
I believe it's OK to brag on an anonymous chat area like Collector's Universe but in questionable taste to do it in person to a stranger that has much control over the fate and happiness of others. Hopefully, you have recently added insight to your list of attributes. Good luck to you others in the neighborhood.

Hey Utah, I think what you did was tantamount to putting a target on your back and shouting "Shoot me!"

You should have told the FED Ex guy that they were false teeth replacement kit.

He probably was shocked to know he was driving around all day with a bunch of chunks of gold in his truck.

Hopefully it all turns out well, but you also potentially endangered the safety of your neighbors who receive these boxes and who are not aware that their FedEx delivery person knows that they contain gold coins and that they may have these, or other, coins in their homes.

I would think that FedEx bonds there drivers. They delivery a lot of high ticket items, cameras, computers, etc. And the drivers know that the shipments are valuable if signatures are required.
Why do you buy anthing that has to be delivered if you are so affaid of the delivery person.
These are the people that keep this place going. The working class are by and far the best people of this country.
And I for one am getting tired of the attacks on them every time somebody has a late package, or somebody actually talks to one of them.
Rant over but as you can see these attacks are getting allmost as old as I am.

great move, quick thinking there Utah.......

next time your package might not make it to your door, especially if its the same driver.....

did you ever hear of using the old "car parts" excuse? and if it's a box of statehood quarters, or rolls of coins, when questioned that it is "a heavy car part", you tell them its a starter.

    That wasn't too smart...
  • LindeDad, you took the words right out of my mouth.
  • LindeDad,I have been a truck driver for over 35 years and i know what goes on in the buisness whether your bonded or not makes no difference to the thieves in the industry.

Next time you might get an empty box.

A few years ago I was getting some boxes of coin rolls.
The mailman joked "what's in this heavy box, a gold brick"

I replied, it's a box of 5000 washers. (and I like that mailman)

  • I DO NOT TRUST ANYONE - EVEN FED-EX DRIVERS!

I knew a friend of a friend of a friend that was a fed-ex driver that always had a few stolen laptop for sale at any given time. I almost bought 1 - brand new in box at a smoking low price. He worked for Fed-ex for over 5 years and has been getting away with dozens of stolen packages all along.

You guys are right, I wasn't thinking. It wasn't very bright to say anything to the driver. I have always had the problem of engaging my mouth before engaging my brain.

  • UtahCoin, didnt you say a few days ago that you sold used boy scout shorts on Ebay? And now you admit to a conversation like that with the Fed Ex driver - It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear to be stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

It wasn't a bright thing to say, but let's be honest:

    1. All of us, at one time or another, have said something that's not so bright. And it usually happens spur-of-the moment.

    2. A lot of sellers in the coin business (especially auction houses sending catalogs) do a poor job of hiding what's in the package. Return shipping addresses with the word "coin" or "numismatic" or "rare", etc. are a major tip-off about what's inside and what the recipient might have in his house. We could all be more careful.
"Men who had never shown any ability to make or increase fortunes for themselves abounded in brilliant plans for creating and increasing wealth for the country at large." Fiat Money Inflation in France, Andrew Dickson White (1912)
  • Utah, probably not a good thing to do, but let's face it: 98% of people in this world are honest. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."
  • When Fedex brought my TJ Gold. The Driver asked "what is the Fulfillment Center". I told him it was probably some kind of Women's make-up promotional that my wife ordered.

I can't believe he even asked. Its none of thier business !

I think Fedex drivers at least the long timers now that any box that says Fulfillment Center is the U.S. Mint or they can probably find out real easy.

My fedex guy lost a box of gold coins from the mint last year. I was getting quite a few boxes there for a while and one came up missing. it was a big deal and I was told that less senior drivers could lose their job over it. The mint refunded my money but I got the impression that no fedex guy would allow a box to go missing on purpose. --jerry

PS The look in his eyes was: "I better not lose one of these or it'll be my a$$."
