NGC and Cleaned coins

A while back I had a post on the NGC boards deleted after I was chastised for asking if it were possible that NGC treated any of there coins in the grading process. Recently a fellow member of the NGC site made the following post:
Gone without a trace ?
A couple of monthÿs back I found a very ugly stain on my 1880 O. I submited the picture to the forum and many responded that this was a cleaned coin. It should not be graded by NGC because the surface was altered but they did. I sent it for appearance review. I was surprised when the coin came back with same grade but the stain on the back was gone. Apparently NGC cleaned the coin a reholdered it.
OKay, the coin looks nice. Recently I was reading some of my old posts and was surprised that the picture of the 1880 O was removed from the post. All other older posts still have there pictureÿs attached but picture of my coin is gone.

This is nothing new. Both PCGS and NGC will correct a problem, if possible, on a re-grade submission.

If they took the ugly stain away you should be thanking them not complaining.

I think it's okay for them to remove a spot because... I see a difference between “cleaning” vs. “conserving/dipping”.
If a coin was “cleaned” there would be marks, hairlines, or the coin might look like dull silver but without any dirt or toning and sill have fine details… in other words, far too clean looking to have that much ware on it.
If the coin is MS and a spot is removed with acetone or the coin had PVC on it and that was removed with acetone or the coin’s natural luster was preserved with a quick dip that’s not “cleaning” if you can’t tell it was cleaned… IMHO.
I know others will say “anything that changes the coin is cleaning” but… honestly, if they purchased a 100 Morgans and all had been tapped in place on a sheet of paper… could anyone honestly say… “I’m going to leave them that way”?
If you leave them on your window sill and they gain a sweet golden tone… does that tone have to be stripped off with dip because they didn’t tone accidentally?
Anyways… if they spot is gone, and you cannot tell there ever was spot, then I think it’s okay.

My guess was that the graders used gloves but might have touched their skin and got oil on the gloves then if they touched the coin it caused a stain so a quick dip in solvent or? easily gets it off.
