POLL: Slab buyers: How fussy are you?

When you look through slabs to find coins, what percentage of the coins are nice enough for the grade that you could see buying them for your collection? Of course you can't buy every coin that meets your standards. And sometimes you might wait for a different grade, or something really special for the grade. But like I said, what percentage of the coins are nice enough for the grade that you could see buying them for your collection?

I am consistently disappointed... but mostly with lower grade TPG's.... since I am always checking for deals. Cheers, RickO

Even in a top TPG holder, your ASE's could develop milk spots, as such, I'm very careful in selecting any for purchase.

I answered 50-75% because that seems to be my satisfaction ratio buying coins online, ebay, bst.

No dealers I know of have any graded slabs for my sets so I really don't get to look at a lot in person.

Definitely less than 5%,, but I do look at a lot of Slabs and only occasionally ask to see one that I consider for purchase. When that happens, I try to remember and be a good customer.
I don't think I'm out of my mind, but I do see a LOT of over-graded material. IMHO.

I try to find the 'perfect' coin first.
Then, I use the number on the slab to see what I have to pay for it.

Who does that for their world coin collection?

Last coin show I went to (small, ~30 tables) there were hundreds, maybe thousands of slabbed US coins, and I didn't see any slabbed world coins at either of the two tables that had world coins!

  • I fall in the 25-50% area. I buy slabbed coins just as I would raw coins. If it meets the criteria of what I am looking for and the price is what I am willing to pay, I'll take it. A lot depends on if I think I will ever find another in that grade again. For example, If I find a MS 61 Prussian Thaler labeled as MS 64, the odds are pretty good that I will eventually find another in equal condition. If the Thaler were from Hesse-Cassel with the same grades attached I would have to consider the odds of ever finding another MS Thaler. I look for and buy for what I want in a coin and not for what someone else has labeled it is as. Bottom line, if I think I can find another equally pleasing coin at a better price I will pass. If I don't think I will find another it will come home with me and it won't matter if it has been graded a point or three higher than it actually is.

I'll second that one ... I normally look at raw coins first at local coins shows ... be it liteside or darkside I prefer to make my own decisions about the coin first before I decide whether or not to entomb it.

I voted 5-10% and dealers consider me a waste of time. I had a funny experience afew years ago. I was at a table, looked at a box a world slabbed and did not see anything that screamed, "buy me, buy me!" so I said thanks. The dealer made a comment and asked what it is that I am looking for. It was one of those rare instances that I had some slabbed world coins with me and I figured that he asked nicely and I should let him look at them as a courtesey... I think that helps me with my case that I am not a waste of time and these are the type of coins I buy. It really does help to have an example of a coin that you especially like with you at a show to share with a dealer to demonstrate that you are a serious buyer.

I am in the same boat as well. I generally look over raw and then decide to buy and make a decision later as to if I want sent them to be slabbed. Right now my collection is made of of more unslabbed than slabbed coinsimage

Maybe 15-20% from unknown quantities (that includes auctions), near 50% when I have the dealers trained, and well under 10% when I'm buying raw.
