Coins In Slabs With Milk Spots

Now that they are worthless, like my 2006-W 20th Anniversary proof Eagles, PR69's, should I crack them out? Just looking for suggestions on what to do. Thanks.

    These spots are inherent. Grades should be maxxed out at 68 with silver uncirculated coins/bullion. We know coming out of the mint that zinc, nickel, clad, silver are trouble. Why the lofty grades in the first place ?

    Enviormental factors once shipped from the Mint seem to encourege the spots formation.

    So, grades on Modern/Bullion coins should be assigned based on what might happen to the coins sometime in the future? Is that another "bifurcated market" kind of thing? Seriously, what are you saying?

    I have 9 anniversary ASE's going in for spot review including the UNC, PRDCAM, and the REV PR.
    What is strange to me is that these were stored in the same PCGS blue box inside a safe deposit box with 11 other Proof ASE's from different years going back to 1986. I could not find any spotting on the regular proofs.
    To make matters even more weird is that the ASE anniversary sets included coins from 2 different mints; that exhibit the same kind of spotting.

    For me ASE's are bullion from here on out...... at least on the buy side of things.

    Grades should be assigned on the quality of strike, luster, eye appeal and technical issues. That's what I'm saying, seriously. SCRUTINIZATION. MS68 is pretty darn high... when we set our sights on the MAXIMUM grade as the only thing WORTH collecting, we've lost focus of why we collect. For the love of the coins, no ? Or is it the profit we can get on a quick flip all that matters ?
    I submit coins for protection mostly... Seriously image

    i sent some proofs off today for spot rev a couple of MS and uno RP. ( all 20th anniv)
    have had more problems with proofs and RP than the MS...

    these will be going going gone 'cept for a few prime ones. pcgs can have the spots. i do appreciate their guarantee.

    BTW these ALL "squirelled" (exception of ONE RP that was milked in mint capsule) w/in two months of slabbing. prior they were in their mint sealed boxes, same environment before and after.

    It could be the slabs crate a micro-climate inside which causes the spotting to aggravate. I now keep all my coins in vacum sealed containers with silica gel so the enviorment factor is almost entirely eliminated. Sofar, so good. The Mint has been reluctant to address the issue in the past because they have stated the ASE's are sold as bullion without numismatic value. However as they are now marketing the 'W' ASE issues as 'collectors versions', if the issue is not addrersed, it will affect future sales as no one is willing to pay a premium for a coin that is only going to spot. I firmly believe that a spot-free ASE may be somewhat of a rarity in the near future.

    Does PCGS generally pay you for the coin or replace it? Do they base the replacement cost on the PCGS price guide?

    I sent them an email about this and received this response:

We do offer a spot review service where you re-submit the coin in and we will take the correct measures to have this coin corrected and appear in the condition it needs to be. If for whatever reason this coin cannot be fixed then we will contact you and go from there. PCGS does guarantee grades as long as the coin remains in a tampered free holder. If the coin no longer appears to be in the condition of the grade then we will downgrade the coin and cut a check in the difference in the value from the previous grade to the current or if the grade is severely downgraded then we will buy the coin from you. This will all be decided once the coin is in our hands. >>



    So they will "take the correct measures to have this coin corrected"... Can the spots be removed after they appear?

    I don't know if I am just lucky or if it is the desert, but I have 100's of silver eagles and not one spot. Knock on wood!

    They spot unslabbed, or slabbed by "insert TPG". It is due to the rinse that the Mint uses and the reaction it has to different environments.

    All of my ASE are in NGC holders, no spots

    I have made this suggestion several times. When you get your ASE's from the Slaughter House,

    give them a bath in 100% acetone. Then vacuum seal them with food storage bags.

    I use the Food Saver brand. I have hundreds of ASE's, that have been sealed for years, no spots, no milk.

    They spot unslabbed, or slabbed by "insert TPG". It is due to the rinse that the Mint uses and the reaction it has to different environments. >>

    It is a serious question. I only asked because I have had complete sets of ASEs in both NCG and PCGS slabs at the same time in the same location and the only spotting problem I had was with a couple of PCGS holdered coins.

    From what I see reported, the spotting tends to affect PCGS slabs more than others or raw. I had a large percentage of PCGS slabbed 20th Anniversary ASE's go back for spot review within 2 months of being graded. I also had some in NGC slabs in which spotting occured but not in the same degree as the ones in PCGS slabs. Until someone states the cause of the problem I have decided no more ASE's for me.

    I have had 6 entire sets of NGC ASE's go almost completely white while I have one PCGS set that is spottless except for some of the newer ones.

    Last time I sent coins in for spot review, I received several back without spots, I think they fixed them. A couple of coins were not able to be saved and PCGS sent me a check for the value and returned the coins! They do stand by their services!!!

    I have a 2000 Millenium set with some spots forming. I think its the luck of the draw.

    I have had several PR70 and MS70 coins get spots that I am sending in for spot review. What about 69's? Would a ASE get a 69 grade with spots?

    MS coins with spots cannot get a grade higher than the mid 60's.

    Proof coins with spots can potentially have the spots removed without damaging the coin. If the spots cannot be removed the same grading applies.

    Call their CS department to be sure. I was told to fill out a regular submission form and marked the level of service as Other - Spot Review. I never got an email back though as some did although it does show that they received my order under the submission status section.

    At what point will TPG's just turn their head in regards to spotting?

    How many can they buy back? Is PCGS willing to buy back 10's of thousands of over priced, milked crap?

    I would assume that every 20th Anniversary Set will milk with time.
