Ever sell a coin to somebody famous?

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭✭✭
I sold a high grade older Commemorative on eBay recently. When the buyer contacted me the name looked familiar, and the area was correct. It turns out it's a 13 year veteran NLF Linebacker.

Out of respect for his privacy, no names.
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

Earlier this year I sold a medal to the individual depicted on the medal (a very, very wealthy individual who will remain nameless.) He didn't even bother to post feedback. Probably typical of the very, very wealthy.

Feedback is overrated, I don't think your "typical of the wealthy" comment is fair image
I never tried to sell a coin to a famous person, but I've done work for quite a few.

This doesn't count, but I once sold an 1890's Studebaker buggy pamphlet on eBay to a member of the Studebaker family...

While at a Seniors golf tournament outside of Philly about 18 years ago, I smashed into a guy walking from the putting green to the next tee. It was totally my fault. I looked at him and started to apologize as he was grabbing my shoulder to steady himself. He said "Excuse there, young fella!" My eyes bugged open as I realized I had just almost knocked Arnold Palmer to the ground at a tournament after he had recently had knee surgery.

Many years ago there was an auction of the Amon Carter, Jr.'s coins. I bought a gem Phillipine Island proof set out of the sale. Had it slabbed and some months later went to the Texas Numismatic Association's anual show in Fort Worth. A gentleman came up to my table and asked to see it. He was very interested in it and asked me many questions, all of which I answered along with telling him the sets pedigree. He thanked me and went on his way. The next day he came back and asked to see it again. Upon final examination, he told me he would buy it. When I asked him to whom should I make the invoice out to, he handed me his check book. His name? Amon Carter lll.

I sold something to Q. David Bowers on Ebay several years ago, I didn't even know he was the winning bidder until he sent
me the address to send it to. My reaction "Holy cow, its Dave Bowers!!!".

The question is, does anybody in numismatics qualify as being "famous."
I'd say not even close, because no human outside of the field would recognize one if they stood in front of him, or if they even heard the name.image

Not every major league baseball player or movie actor is going to be well known to the general public either.

There was no qualification as to how "famous" was defined so I think Q. David Bowers is OK.

Now that I think about it I gave Michael Irvin change for a $20 bill in college, I guess you could say I sold him $20 face in currency right before he nearly killed me driving to lunch in his Grey M3 BWM his agent bought him.

Do famous namesakes count? imageI recently sold to a "Mark Martin"--i don't know if it was the race care driver or not. Guess i should have asked. Anyone know if Mark Martin is a coin collector? I also sold a coin to a guy named "Dusty Rhodes"--but he was not the wrestler.

Paul Newman (address in NYC) won an ebaY auction of mine last year.

I rode bumper cars against the real Greg Brady in the 1980s at a theme park here in Virginia image (yes, we all ganged up on him, then pinned him in).
