I was on pins & needles, but I had faith that the 2 of the 6 photos were actually what the coin looked like.......Rick

  • A very nice coin. It is very difficult to grade a photo.

  • I was one who said the photos were of a polished coin. Looking at the photos again, my opinion remains the same. I do agree with PocketEasyTreasures: It is difficult, and often erroneous, to grade a coin by images only. Now what was the slabbed grade?

If you are happy, I am happy. image

  • I never said it was polished then. However, looking at the photos it sure does look polished. I would have guessed the same.
I think it mainly has to do with the way the photos were taken.

Congrats on getting it encased in PCGS plastic.

I wrote that it looked polished in the images, which it did, but I am happy for you that PCGS graded it AU58.

  • Those early Walkers have a "look" to them that is different than the later ones. I could see where it looks kind of polished in a couple of the pics. Congrats!

The first pic that loads with the auction does look like a polished coin. Some of the other photos don't look so bad. There is a thrill to bidding on these kind of coins, however, without a stated return policy, it is not my kind of game. A person that keeps bidding on coins that look like that, with photos like that are going to get more than their share of whizzed and polished coins. Some might be decent coins too. However on Ebay, the odds aren't that great.

If a person likes buying lottery tickets, and understands that they are buying lottery tickets, enjoy. Again, not my cup of tea.

Red Tiger expresses my thoughts on this coin. While I am happy you got it slabbed by a major TPG, I want to remind the readers that this means only two things:

    a) The TPG is putting its reputation on the line that the coin is genuine
    b) Said TPG deems the coin to be market acceptable, at an AU 58 grade

Isn;t that the case with all coin submissions? What makes you think that it is not genuine?

  • bad photos made it difficult to judge properly....

I think you may have paid a little bit too much. Not way too much, though.

That is harsh. The pics are all folks had to go on. The first pic that loads shows a coin that 9 out of 10 would say is polished and I'll stay with that opinion. Keep buying coins with photos like that, and a person will get their share of polished junk coins. All folks can offer are opinions, some are expert, most are not.

With an expensive raw coin on Ebay, no return policy, the odds are not good. The buyer got a get-out-jail-free-card out of the deal, paying about $100 more than the coin is worth at what it graded out at. I am surprised the buyer is happy with that result, but considering what the downside was (a $20 value polished coin that can't be returned), I suppose that isn't too bad. Of course there was a chance the coin grades out at MS63 and like some other lottery ticket buyers, the bidder might be jumping up and down and telling the forum they are a bunch of idiots. No one is 100%, and certainly forum opinions are not either.

Well, like I said, some of these lottery tickets do come in as winners, or another free ticket (this case). If that is what a person enjoys spending their money on, go in with eyes open and have fun.

That opinion is based on more than just this one instance.....image

    So you agree??
  • I don't buy raw coins on eBay. I need to see them in hand or have a return policy where I can view them on approval. There are too many coins that don't meet market standards and to keep returning them after bidding.

It's just not worth the gamble/hassle.

I remember the original post, and I'm glad you're happy with how it graded. That's a nice coin, my 1916 is only a F12 (self-graded).

rec78 - I did not question the coin's authenticity. All I did was to remind people what a major TPG slabbing the coin actually means.

Too many people people think that they are almost blessed by Allah if a raw coin they submit is slabbed by one of the majors.

It seems I might have commented on this coin, but if I didn't then, I will now. From the photo's I would say the coin had been polished and it looks like an AU 55 or 58, which is a slider that some will try to "improve" to simulate BU by polishing.

I'm happy for you if the coin is in fact a BU, but you have way more guts than I to pay what you did based on those photo's. I wish you continued good luck!

I agree that you are being harsh in your criticism. Only a couple of folks say they are experts. Images alone are only an indication. Forum folks can only go on what they have, and in this case it was several images of what looks like a polished coin, and an expensive raw coin offered on Ebay without a return privilege. If folks want to play roulette and bid on that kind of stuff more power to them.

For new readers, new collectors, I want them to understand that these expensive raw Ebay coins are often like lottery tickets. A few come in as winners and the winners come back to the forum and crow and do a happy dance. Like lottery tickets, the majority come in as losers and are rarely heard from again. In this case, the buyer paid about $100 more than the coin graded out as, so in my mind, the coin is not much to crow about, unless the divine thrill of being right is worth $100.
