OK. That picture sucks. Adjust the color balance its too red

Edited: After playing with the image in Photoshop I will guess MS64. No deep marks show but it seems to have lots of abrasions on semi-pl fields which may also be hazy, and could grade lower depending on how it looks in hand.

Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

I am new to the board and grading but like these grading exercises.
My guess is MS60 because of bag marks.
  • A bad 64. The cheek looks to be an acne farm, but that probably does not matter to PCGS

Welcome to the boards. An MS60 Morgan is really a horror to behold. Liberty looks like Medusa after being slashed by Persius.

After seeing the coin in hand, my first call was 62, with the bag marks in the field limiting the grade . . . . . . .

  • I really love the car, but I am so anal about coins, my classics all seem to be in plastic holders. They are not nearly as fast, as the Malibu, but sweet in their own way. Obsession is a terrible syndrome.

that was funny... Brutally honest, but definitely funny to read : "That picture sucks"

    eyoung429,
MS63, and a nice strike with tons of detail, but just a few too many marks on the cheek to go higher. The slightest friction or cabinet rub on the breast feathers (reverse) probably hurt it, too. The reverse fields look very good and the obverse fields a bit "cloudy".
    There's my honest opinion,

To me, that coin looks like a prime example of the rare MS-60 grade.

    First, the pictures are horrible.

Second, it looks like you hooked a MS61.

    Third, I'd throw it back.

Now, for the gentle version: Nice morgan but it has too many hits on the cheek and too many abrasions to grade much higher than MS62.image
  • I can't decide if the rose toning is natural. Even though I already guessed a gift 64, I am amending my grade to MS64RB

Ok, sorry about the pics....my camera is heading into the trash....I had some moisture in it and cleaned it but now it is non-repairable.

This is one of the graded ones that I am a little ticked about...I really don't think it merits this:

I would have said 61. It doesn't appear to have wear as you ms60 84-cc does. I Like the the 84-cc, a nice 58 IMO, but a good look for a coin to have.
  • FatManFatMan Posts: 8,977
I don't see any wear, but I do see very abraded fields. I'm guessing PCGS net graded the coin due to the abrasions.
  • That seems like one of the only grades it CAN'T be. Either 60-61 or AU50-53 in my book. AU58 implies a PQ coin.

  • Well, duh. Sorry. Although it is impossible to see slight color differences that can show the possible rub, looks to me like somebody had a bad day at PCGS. Considering everything looks like a bid to get more grading fees. With Morgans, it is my humble opinion that they could call lots of coins with a weaer strike AU 58. Like travelling in the NBA, they just rerely make the call.

the AU might be for the rub on the top of the cap and the lower hair curls?

    nice $ though!

It can be toughh to distinguish between scuffs and scratches caused by contact with other coins in mint bags and scuffing and abraisions caused by a brief period of handling in commerce. Its the old super slider issue. You will need to tilt and rotate the coin in the light to see if the luster in the fields is interrupted in places-- a static head on photo of the coin won't do it. The closest the photos come to showing field rub so far as I can tell is the last shot above the eagle's head. It may also be that what appears to be haziness in the fields is really interuption of luster caused by handling.

Will take some more later....this one is going to be either free'd or reviewed. I could see warranting a 63, but a 58??????

BTW....anyone taking a guess at the VAM for this one image
