newP, 30-S buffalo [grade posted]

I thought I really had something here strike-wise until I saw some of Guy's prior posts for this date/MM. Still I think the strike may have bought a point in the grading relative to the dings and so-so luster. Thoughts/grades welcome.

If Guy has a better struck 30-S, I'd like to see it. The tail loop, lettering, and feather tips look great and the hair demarcation across the Buffalo's should also looks much stronger than usually seen. The strick on this date/mm often is as poor as the worst dates in the series so this example is superior all the way.

yeah, that's a nice strike for that one.

    I'd give the Odv a 63 and the Rev a 64, net 63.

    nice pickup.

I like it...the rim starting above Liberty and going around most the obverse looks a bit weird to me...it could be shadows on the picture...I would say MS64.
  • I agree for the most part with what has been said. The "problem" around the rim is the TPG insert.

    Nice Buff!

    I would call the obverse a 64.25 and the reverse a 64.6.

Looks like the scales fell in your favor on this one.

Here's my NGC MS65. The obverse strike on your coin is better--compare the definition on the hair knot. Your reverse strike may also have the edge, compare the manes above the buffalo's shoulder. Your coin is a little more chattery with more numerous small surface markings, but mine has a more prominent hit in the center of the buffalo's abdomen. As for luster, the images of our coins are so different, it's hard to tell. You have a great coin there!

    I'd say 62. A very nicely-struck 62!

All those little dings and nicks are the original roughness from the blank planchet that remained because the coin was not struck up enough to obliterate them.

Nice pickup and I'd wager it's a 65 if the luster is there. The obverse of mine has nearly as strong a strike, but the reverse on yours kills mine.

Interesting array of responses. A couple of 60 - 62 which I take to mean that some thought a problem/worn coin. A smattering of 63-64, and two 65s. Koyenkwest had an interesting observation of the chatter, one that I haven’t heard before, but don’t doubt for a minute his expertise on issues regarding strike. And the answer is....

  • WOW a 65! Very nice!

As was stated, this 30-S is pretty well struck compaired to others of the date as are all S minted Buffalos from the 20's and early 30's. I think that there must be some really great luster on the coin too to push the coin up to a 65. I would have guessed 64 just from the photo without being able to see the coin in hand.

there shouldnt be any surprise for the grade the first is far superior ,strike wise than guys coin. although as shamika said , this is a very hard date to find totally struck up and both guys coin and the ist coin are very much above average for the date!image
