Please grade 1894 & 1900 Indian cents AT?

I was in the process of transferring my collection of Indian head cents from a Whitman slider album to an Intercept Shield album last night. It takes a little effort to get the cents in the album. Does anyone have any advice on how to get them in without damaging the coins? The fit is really tight.

I was inspired to begin collecting Indian Heads about 20 years ago when I bought a collection that included about 10 nice Indian Heads. I am trying to complete the collection with at least XF condition, though the later dates are nicer. I probably add 1 coin a year!

These are from the collection, 2 of the originals I started with. Please grade them, and let me know your opinion on the toning, AT or NT. If the sellers father was using AT on them, it was done at least 25 years ago, so that may have some impact on your opinions. Of the nicer Indian heads only 3 exhibited this type of toning.

As I've admitted before on this forum, I have no clue on coin grading. Let me restate that...I know all about grading, I have all the books, and have collected for years, been to ANA grading classes and seminars. When it comes to differentiating Mint state coins on a numeric scale? I simply do not have an eye for it.

Help is appreciated though, and I promise not to TPG any of these and break up my collection! I will post some others later.

    Any opinions about grade, seperate from the AT/NT opinion?

    Been a while since I graded these well ... but my take is this;

    1894, definately cleaned, definately AT ... about EF45 details
    1900, looks like it was dipped and then AT'd ... details of an ~ AU55

    “We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

    The chinese-made intercept shield albums are very difficult to get coin into, at least for the Indian Cent series. I have had to put the coin in slightly and cover it with a plastic flip and push real hard. I don't like them for that reason. I like the 2X2 intercept shield holders that can go into Eagle holders or in a plastic 2X2 page. That way you are not limited to what they label on the album.

    Both coins are about XF, but should look chocolate brown in that condition. Of course, I suspect you knew that. The top one was dipped and probably retoned badly. The bottom one was whizzed and also retoned badly. maybe you stored it under a leaky water heater. Since you say they were not touched for 25 years, you must remember that 25 years ago whizzing copper was a real big problem.

  • Hey, these coins inspired me, so I guess they're not all that bad. I guess I need to look all pof the coins over more carefully, and dump the altered ones.

    I need to be careful though, because as I said, they are mixed in with ones I bought later, mostly decent grades. I don't know which is which, and over the years I haven't given the collection much attention.

    I will try to get pics of all of the questionable coins, and put them in a single post.

    If I list all of the bad ones as a group on eBay, and of course disclose their problems, will anyone bid on them? How much of a hiit do AT coins get?
