ICG Grading

  • For grades up 65, I think ICG is as good as anybody. At this level the average collector should be able to competently grade his/her own coins. Beyond that though it gets kind of dicey. I have a 1982 Proof Set in ICG PF70 DCAM that cost me next to nothing. In fact the Kennedy half was free from Numismatic Consultants in 2000, since defunct, for my orders above a certain dollar threshold. I completed the proof set for less than $50 or so. No, I don't think it will cross......

I think with any grading service you have to look at the coin not the holder. I see PCGS graded coins I wonder if they would grade the same if cracked out and sent back in. As far as ICG or ANACS there's certainly coins that would cross and some would upgrade. I brought an XF40 1811 ICG graded Bust Half from Dick Osburn recently that he said should be an XF45 which after I recieved the coin I agree with the expert. He offered to crack it out for me to send to PCGS but I declined since I'm a collector and not a registry or plastic collector. It was a very nice addition to my collection.

Mr Early Gold. It appears your 95% claim has been debunked. Congratulations!

<< <i>I've only bought one Morgan dollar (1900-O) in a ICG holder and that was because I thought it was undergraded. It was in a 62 holder, but of 6 guys (3 of which are dealers) whose opinion I respect, they all thought it was a 64 easily and one said it might have a shot at 65! I wish I could image it for the forum but alas, I can't.
The dealer at a show where I bought it said he had to have 63 bid for the coin because he was already into it that much because of the grading fee's. He thought it would come back a 64 easily also.

hmmmmm? Why would he be into it for more money because of grading fees? That tells me he submitted it over and over trying to get it to upgrade. I surely wouldn't pay for someone's repeated crackout attempts for upgrades.

I'm assuming he bought it for around $25-$30 and hoped (assumed) it was an $80 coin. The grading fee's may have only been $5 to $10, but he sold it to me for $40 and I was glad to have it for that amount. This dealer is pretty small time and carries very few slabbed coins. I assume after this experience, he'll do even less.

I guess what I'm saying is, I doubt he resubmitted it at all, but your point is a good one.

I have used ICG, and have to say their grades are on the money.

Yes, they give out more 70's than PCGS on modern bullion.

PCGS will not assign a 70 to the new W ASE's, ICG will.

Plus I like the ICG holder..............

  • From what I've crossed about 75% of your 62's will 58... Anything 65 or higher will be overgraded by one pt, others will stay the same.
  • ICG says this is a 62 - agree or disagree?

Not the best pics, of course....maybe I'll take some more when I get it in hand.

  • ICG is pretty good in most cases--it should ever grade lower than a 64 at PCGS, and should probably cross at 65

I think 62 looks acceptable for that coin. Seems to be too many hits on the face for anything higher, but has the look of an unc piece.

You think so? That'd be a sweet make for 6% over spot. Thanks for the input.

Newb, I will give that lib. a 63 from the images. Not a bad deal at all for just over spot.

About 6 years ago, I bought a group of 11 ICG Carson City Dollars, 2 were MS65, 3 were MS 64, 6 were MS63. Two of the 63s were upgraded, but the one I thought had the best shot did not.
  • I just bought a Franklin in ICG. After further inspection I found PVC on the coin.

I have had nothing but good luck with ICG coins that people turned their noses up to.

I have sent them to PCGS cracked out for grading as well as for crossover and every last piece graded or crossed

    to exactly the same grade.

This is by no means "the Norm", I suppose, but as for coins in hand pieces selected by me they've done as well

as anyone else. "Smart money" would be to buy into this not so Dark Horse Company. JMHO -

    They are AOK with me.image
