  • Looks like another refractor sold - in less than 24 hours.

    '93 McGwire Refractor
  • hhhmmmm, rare, let me see, oh okay..
You know how there's those 2 cards listed in the 1990 card section of the Mcgwire card list from Mcgwire.com?
What are they refering to?. You know, the "Fanclub cards 1 and 2."
    Could they be postcards?
Could they be mistakes (which are prevalent in the list) put there by the author of the website.
Have you ever wondered: "Have I seen these two cards before? Are they color or are they black and white?
What do these two cards look like.
Well, for starters the 2 fanclub cards are from 1991, not 1990.
Now, don't get me wrong, there are many fanclub cards/postcards/4 x 6 cards made for the Mcgwire fanclub stretching all the way back to 1989 and ending in 1996!
But That list from mcgwire.com only list 2, numbers 1 and 2!
I had never seen them before until I won a recent auction.
They were in the possession of some liquidating Mcgwire card collector who probably decided to sell the cards because he just couldn't figure out the TRUE value of the cards.
Rest assured, I know the value of these two cards.
10 years of looking on ebay has never brought out these cards before. They are as elusive as the 1989 MLB Keychain, and as overlooked as the 1996 Liberty Sports Mcgwire.
And yet, here they are with serial numbered backsides that legitimate my claim that they are the 1990 Fanclubs as mystically refered to by Mcgwire.com

At Least that's what the guy above me was in wonderment about.
  • I know, since prices of the 93 Refractor have been going up, isn't it AMAZING how the market has been "flooded" by other sellers unloading their 1993 Refractors of McGwire?? Wow!!

  • I don't think wonderment is the word I would have used.

The homerun chrome Collection Is SUPER Expensive and tough!
I never even thought about trying to get them all in a row. >>

Jgarcill- I bought just about every McGwire I could ten years ag, most are raw, realized I had two complete sets of the 1 thru 70 chrome HR sets, I forgot I even had them until this thread came up. Is it worth having them PSA graded?image
  • YES! Grade them all!
Having a completely graded set is a unique item.
You can some tens among such a lareg submission, asw ell.
Just make sure you put the highest "dollar value" when paying insurance.
A few dollars added to the insurance assures good grades on your cards.
Lastly, tehre are at least 6 guys: Markmcgwiremuseum, TUpacnacho, Wally, Barnhard family, Bane50, and maybe MDJDOB who will buy your set.
  • Good advice, thank you Sir. With my addictive personality, I just went nutso about McGwire cards in 1998-1999. I just looked up his master set composition and there are over 2000 cards required, well I probably have at least 800 of them. I have not looked at them for years. My generation was Mantle and I had a hell of a time just getting his 21 card basic set. I finally made it to the registry last month. Thanks again, and I admire your sense of humor. It makes these threads more fun to read.image

I have an '88 Topps McGwire proof card with a blank back. It doesn't say "proof" on the card; it looks just like the regular ones, except it appears to have a Tiffaney finish.
Judging from the scans in this thread, PSA will grade it, and it's got a chance for 10.
    Any ideas on its value?
  • kidsoxkidsox Posts: 120 ✭✭
Oh yeah, two more things on the 88 Proof card . . . it's an O-Pee-Chee with a white back, unlike the orange of the regular issue.

You'll be able to sell it if it grades a 9 or a 10, which it should. the OPC proofs came with razor sharp corners, great centering, and perfect color. as long as it was kept that way it should grade high. they actually are fairly common, I see about 6 a year. I would still be interested in it once graded, as Im sure some of the others here would as well.
  • Although not graded yet by PSA because they do not have holders to fit them, I've long been a collector of Nike "poster cards" these were made ca. 5 x 7 inch and were exact copies of their 3 x 4 ft posters. They were sent to the sports stores to show them wet the posters would look like. These are my two favorites from McGwire, although I must say he really disappointed me at the "roid hearings"
  • I have that first Nike Poster Promo.
It has writing on the back at the bottom saying who
s on the front, I believe.
    They are pretty rare.
I could bug PSA for a thousand years and they would never grade the postcard.
Oh, but if some obscure ruth card was found cut out of some obscure black and white book, they grade it in a moment, even if it is a 1 of 1 type thing.
I'm not complaining, just thinking that PSa should start offering to grade Colla promo card and Baseball postcards.
You guys don't even have to grade it just label it as a certified promo.
Of, course they won't so why bother mentioning it.
By the way, that poster is supposed to connect to teh IWll clark poster.
The 5 x 7 poster promo sample is not full bleed on the left side, but enclosed by a thick black border.
  • By teh way, if you guys want a hard one to find try the 1989 Starline Mcgwire Poster Sample 5 x 7!! That puppy is almmost as tough as the 1989 Starline Mcgwire BIRTHDAY card!! yeah sterline made birthday cards.

Does anyone know the story on McGwire's 2000 Fleer Tradition card? It says "1 of 12" on the back (no other number). I can't find it in any price guide. Probably it's junk.
It came as a single card sealed in plastic. The mysterious part is that someone left it at my door 7 years ago. I never found out who the prankster was. Is the joke on him or me?
  • Without looking into my card box, Im pretty sure you must be talking about the Twizzlers card. Fairly common. The '1 of 12' is on the card because it is card #1 out of a 12 card set, not because there were only 12 made. Hope this helps.
  • kidsoxkidsox Posts: 120 ✭✭
Yup, it's the Twizzlers all right. Thanks for the help.
  • Just pulled this today. VERY excited to say the least!
