Interesting....are 80sJ and Toppsco1lector the same?

Interesting....

If so, I'd suggest that any/all of you involved in the rips and/or trades that want to pursue the matter further pool your cases together and go from there.

I think it would be safe to say, they are no way related.

I have sent cards to Toppsco and he lives in MD.

I have no clue? Someone brought it up in the linked thread and I figured it would get some confirmation or not over here.

I sent some cards to ToppsC a while back.

He lives in Temple Hills, MD.

I did not charge him or anything - I had to check with him to see if he had received them.

He mentioned he wasn't sure who sent them - but then said he posted about it. Don't remember and care since that's not the spirit behind sending something.

I'm beginning to have a crappy feeling about some of this...

I'm thinking some may be taking advantage of the good nature of this board.

That's sad since it could cause it all to cease - and that includes me too - my magnanimity if being challenged.

    Sadly, I must agree.

The only remedy of assurance that I can think of is
that if party-one has not had a previously OK transaction
with a trader/buyer, all funds/cards have to be in the
hands of party-one before party-one ships anything.

Since I KNOW that I am not going to rip anybody off,
my terms are: "Send me yours, I'll send you mine."

If folks do not want to deal with me on that basis,
    they will not.

Thats funny you said that Mike.

I also had to check with him when I sent him free cards as well. What makes it worse is the fact that I got the same excuse!

I know what you mean about the "spirit" behind the giving.

It just sucks to take the time and send stuff to people for free and not even get a "thank You".
  • tennesseebankertennesseebanker Posts: 5,433 ✭✭✭
I sent him several cards that he had asked for on a thread from me directly, I spent anywhere from 45min to an hour looking for the cards packing them and sending them off.
I never recieved a thank you, I got the cards, or kiss my azz. It's a pretty crappy way to do business or even treat someone else.

I also sent him a free auto. I had thought that he was a good guy but maybe not so. This is really too bad. I always thought
that this site was above all the usual low/no references need to send first crap, but man cmon.

Looks like paypal and delivery conf. is the way to go.

in regards to the comments of being concerned with who we deal with on here, maybe one solution is to have a reference thread. whereas someone can just post the other members id in that thread with whom they plan on doing a sale/purchase/trade with and other members who have dealt with either party can comment as to whether they have dealt with either party and if it went smoothly. i for one, would feel alittle awkward to post a new thread each first time deal just asking for references on someone unless it was a permanent thread topic which everyone uses, especially if it were a smaller deal. but maybe this is what it has come to in light of recent circumstances. also, i really think everyone's profile should be required to be filled out and displayed. people shouldnt be able to hide behind anonymity especially if transactions are taking place. just my opinion.
  • goose3goose3 Posts: 11,471 ✭✭✭
really profiles don't mean much because anyone can put anything they like in them.

I don't have mine filled out because

    1. I don't want spam mail, junk mail, etc...
    2. My dad's name is the same and if I don't get the junk mail he CERTAINLY will
    3. I'm a police officer and don't care for my info to be "out there"

Yeah. I too know the feeling of not getting thanked. I once sent a
card to another board member. (Not 80'sjunk or ToppsCo) And
the package never came back, and did not get a Thank You, either
on the board on via PM.

  • I hope it wasn't me. I remember when I went looking to buy Mike Greenwells to start my player registry set the response from this board was beyond overwhelming. I literally received hundreds of Mike Greenwell cards in the mail from guys here. I believe I thanked everyone either through PM or a post but, if I remember correctly, some of the packages had no mention of where they came from so I made a general "Thank You" post in my original thread.

What scares me now is that I know how generous a lot of folks are on here and it wouldn't surprise me to find out that more Greenwells have arrived at my place back in MA. I moved out to CA in mid-December so if anyone has sent more Greenwells and hadn't heard from me I sincerely apologize as I honestly didn't know they were there. While my collection isn't large enough or diverse enough to repay the generosity of many on here yet I assure everyone that the day will come when I'll be able to help folks out here as much as they've helped me.

I mean, people don't exactly run to their computer to list all the Mike Greenwells they've got for sale on ebay so anytime I can acquire one or two without having to crack a box of wax to do it is an enormous help. So, in the chance that anyone here had forwarded more MG's to me in MA may I take this opportunity to sincerely say THANK YOU. It is, without a doubt, a much appreciated gesture and helps me to remember the quality of this board when all the peripheral horse garbage sometimes distracts us.

Ninety-eight percent of all my Greenwells have come from this board through generous members so when the set finally gets put up it looks like I'm going to have to call it the CU Board Members Mike Greenwell Player Master set. image

Thanks again to anyone and everyone who has helped me in numerous ways since I've joined. I only wish there were more I could do to help all of you.

  • I have sent several things out for free and will continue to do so. I have also inquired about cards that guys get graded or raw fully prepared to pay. With the late 70's - 80's rip several people sent me cards. Some requested postage some didn't. Some included extra cards and that's great. I think I pm'd or emailed each one to thank them for there generosity. It's what make this board and this hobby enjoyable to me. I don't have a local shop to hang out in and shoot the bull about cards or sports or whatever. So I come here to do it. If there are guys out there taking advantage of board member or not even responding when cards are recieved then bad on them. Not much goes unnoticed on this boardsas shown on the "Gary Incident". So it'll all come out eventually. Just my 2 cents.

I was not been thanked by a board member to whom I sent a free item as well. I see no sense in making a big deal out of it or naming names; it happens, so my philosophy is simply to move on, and ignore the ignoramus henceforth.

The vast majority of members of this fraternity are solid guys; they are the ones on whom I chose to focus. For example, I received contest wins from onlyanumber and eagleeyekid, and while I thanked them at the time I would like to reacknowledge their hobby spirit and generosity. Furthermore, Stown ran a contest a few weeks back and I happened to win that as well (believe me, these wins are just blind luck...I do no preparation). He sent me a prize and it did not arrive--must have gotten hung up at the border by those otherwise inept Canadian Customs officials. Anyway, despite my protestations he has insisted on sending me a replacement prize.

On numerous occasions I have purchased cards from board members, and as a Canuck who doesn't use paypal I find myself simply sticking US cash in an envelope more often than not. Each and every time things have gone off without a hitch.

Anyway, these are the kind of things that go on daily on these boards and too often they go unmentioned.

We mustn't let a couple of jack offs spoil this community.

Toppsco1lector screwed me too on a trade. Never recieved my card. Theres a thread in the Buy,Sell,Trade. Im not the only one. I have a couple of deals in progress right now with 2 other members. When those are done I think I will be taking a break from here until all of the smoke clears. Maybe all of the scum bags who are scamming people will be gone by then.

I mentioned this in another thread but it seems appropriate here also.

The publicity from the large $$ group rips ( particularly the '75 minis ) might explain the influx of scam artists around here.

In all likelyhood these dirtbags noticed big $$ being thrown around by folks who for the most part have never actually met in person and saw it as their opportunity to swoop in for the kill.

New show? I hadn't even heard of it. I'd love to go, but unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to make it. I'm tentatively planning on going to the Chicago show next weekend, and I can't see how I can break away two weekends in a row.

How big is the show going to be? Is it going to be on par with the May and November shows? If so I may have to rearrange my schedule.

imo, 80s jumps out first. he was here before the rips began but i think he may have fed from the pub the 75s received on the board and how quick others were to join in throwing a combined $25k in on the bust.

    This is disappointing.

But, I will have to say - that most of us know each other over a decent period of time...

I recommend we keep an open mind - but be watchful in the future who you trade with - or send something to I guess.

I, too, am surprised to hear that Toppscollector is turning out to be a scam artist and a thief. There's no way, though, that he and Gary are the same person. I recall that Toppscollector was traveling around a bit and looking to relocate. If I recall correctly, he was also in the construction or home improvement business, and was pretty young. There's no question in my mind that some people come on here looking to scam others, but Toppscollector was on here for quite a while, off and on, over a long period, and didn't really strike me that way. Still, if all this is true, he should be held fully accountable, legally and otherwise.

The anatomy of a CON, is to deceive...to make people believe things that arent really true...to gain trust...to provide misinformation every step of the way...different addresses does not mean its different people...

Gary did say he was always traveling around the country, maybe he was picking up stuff from friends/accomplisses/PO boxes (sp)...

maybe that is why topps collector didnt send thank you's many times , cause he didnt get the stuff for weeks at a time ...

there are easy ways to make your IP address seem different than it really is....remotely accessing a desktop for one...or a program called ANonimizer for another....making it appear like have separate Mailing address' is even easier!

if you havent meet each person YOURSELF and you KNOW WITH YOUR OWN EYES they are different people..then dont assume so.....you know what they say when you ASSume.....

what a great golden parachute for a CON...."thats not me, its a different address" or "thats not me, the IP address is different"....

i didnt get taken by any CON artists, but unlike Garci, i dont think its funny, and im not happy people got scammed...im pissed, cause this is my community too!

  • And it seems topps was posting in several of 80sjunkies' threads, building hype.

There's another ID (I won't drop names) in the 80s thread who I have been told is another ID of 80s....who essentially is building hype by saying something along the lines of 'wow I can't believe there's a spot left...when I first heard about this I didn't think I had a chance of getting in!' or something along those lines.

    No. Not really.

It is just that there is no great "evidence" of a link.

There is a lot of private information held by some folks who
have dealt with both perps, which info indicates that the
two subjects are not the same person.

That does not mean they are not the same person.

There is no concrete evidence that Toppscollector and 80s junkie are the same person. It just seems that way to some conspiracy theorists because they both stole cards/money? Well, all scammers do that, but there are many different scammers out there, and these two aren't the only ones.
