Doesanyone collect Ike dollars?

I buy all the Ike dollars I find at the bank and most of the Kennedy halves. Most are not in perfect shape but at times I will find a good one. I also have a Ike from the mint in the holder, a proof and I like it but I am not sure what these will be worth if I sell them some day. I never see anyone talk about the Ikes!

  • I like Ikes. They were "circulating" when I was a kid, and I have been considering putting together a set of silver UNC and Proofs.

    Sure, why not?
The prices are very reasonable. image
  • Yes I'm working on a registry set (5150 circ strike Ikes), completed a Proof set but looking to upgrade, and have Unc rolls of almost every issue just missing 73, 74, 76 silver I have about eighteen of each but will only place select coins into my rolls.

  • I do! the set is listed under PAD in the Ikes with varieties, I believe it is set #11.
Have not been following these much lately, and may wind up selling the set since my interests have gone into other coins mainly gold for the last 3 years.
They are definitely difficult to find in higher grades, but the hunt is fun.

IKEs don't get much respect in these forums unless they are either very high grade or a PKOK coin.

Here are a couple of recent acquisitions thanks to Segoja!

From an IKE collector standpoint, my advice to you is to attend some coin shows and peruse the IKEs some of the dealers bring along. If they don't have any and you show an interest, they will bring them the next time.

I like IKEs because at this point in time, they are very affordable and IMO a good collection to acquire and complete. You can also get into the variety phase of these coins and might even discover something new. Since the series is so unpopular, little real study has been done on the different varieties and types that are out there so the door is more or less wide open.

I think its about time that this coin started getting the recognition it deserves and perhaps it soon will.

  • I collect the 40% silver ones.
  • I love the "blue envelope" 40% MS ones. They have a great look, and I'm always looking for bright white untoned ones with clean surfaces.

  • I have been collecting ikes since when they came out. I have quite a few ms-64 to ms-66 ikes graded by pcgs and ngc. I have 2 ms-63 pcgs type 2 1972's.. Prices seem to move around alot on these both on ebay and Heritage auctions. Someday, I think they will appreciate in value.

I only have a couple of AU-58 Ikes for my type set. This one's pretty darned nice for the grade, though:

I used to collect high-grade MS Ikes....Then I discovered Ike errors and wanted a bigger challenge......

Now, I have a complete set of MS high-grade Ike errors.....all except the 73-P and 74-S.

This is the term used on this forum for Peacock since the term for a rooster cannot be used.

That is, unless you know the code™!

    Which I dont.

BTW, that PKOK 71-D has the cleanest and strongest strike I have ever seen on a 71-D. Had it not been for that hit through the letter T in LIBERTY, it would have gone higher IMHO!

I've liked the mint state clad Ikes for a long time.

I've only recently discovered the 40% uncs. These are fun to search since the really nice ones
really stand out a lot from the typical coins and are very attractive. I've always loved the reverse
design and can appreciate the obverse as well. The design really stands out even more in the 80%
silver of the silver clad. The nice ones aren't that tough either with about 5% of them being pretty
    clean.

  • Yes IKEs are fun to collect. A deceivingly simple looking set to collect though.
I am pretty happy with my set too.

    I have a proof set
  • I started to look for them when I decided to pursue a modern type set, found I liked them so much I started a 1976-S proof set (love those PR69DCAM's!) and some other years in high MS and PR so I have all the reverses. High-end Ikes look great, anything below MS66 not so good IMHO.

But Eisenhower signed the legislation creating the Space Program, Kennedy just continued it. Funny thing though, Eisenhower would have rather fed the hungry here in our own country rather than spend money on the space program. He never really saw any sense in exploring the moon.
