How has this forum affected your coin buying?

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,419 ✭✭✭✭✭
Do you spend more money on coins as the result of this forum?

Do you collect different coins than you otherwise might have been collectiing?

Are you collecting more intelligently as the result of the forum?

Do you spend more time on the hobby, or does the time you spend here simply displace other numismatic activities?

Do the things that you learn here increase or decrease the likelihood that you will remain a collector? If so, how?

Any other thoughts?

I've become more informed about artificial toning, better educated about what other collectors find desirable, and more likely to buy coins in PCGS holders as opposed to raw or slabbed by other services.

I certainly think I have a much better eye for quality and eye appeal now. That is the main impact this place has had on me.

Seriously, I'm curious about this stuff. More to the point, I wonder if I'm completely wasting my time here.

I have learned quite a bit here. I launched nearly my entire collection. I switched collecting styles--buy fewer, nicer coins as opposed to buying everything within a certain price range. I have decided not to focus on a particular series but rather interesting, historical pieces. I learned the definition of original.

  • Having been away from collecting for a very long time, I joined this forum to get a feel for the Standing Liberty Quarter market.
I felt that it was time to sell.

I have remained broke since joining. I now have a new interest in collecting.
I have met a lot of cool and friendly people. Several very generious and helpfull people.

I still haven't sold my quarters. In fact I was going to take them to a local dealer today, but my wife said "NO!".

To answer my own questions, the forum hasn't affected my own collecting. However, it has helped me tremendously as a dealer, especially in leading me to opportunities in areas of the market that I normally wouldn't watch.

On second thought, those extra profits get plowed into my collection, so I guess my collecting has been affected by the forum, indirectly.

It has helped me to appreciate other series, and also to obtain information that would otherwise be hard to find. I have also gotten to know a lot of collectors in my area of interest, and I tend to learn a lot from them. I also get some good insight into dealers by reading their responses here (good and bad), and determining who I should deal with and who to stay away from.

    Yes.

Do you collect different coins than you otherwise might have been collectiing?
Yes. If it weren't for Pontiacinf's thread years ago I never would have bought the Buffalo silver dollars. I probably shouldn't have sold all of them, but I lost my job and needed the cash.

The biggest collection I started in recent years was the result of buying a coin from a forum member on a whim.

Are you collecting more intelligently as the result of the forum?
    Yes.

It has decreased the likelihood I'll spend huge premiums on "red" copper from the 19th century because I have seen how good the coin doctors have gotten, but it hasn't decreased the likelihood I'll remain a collector.

The knowledge on these boards, from people you can tell are the true knowledgable people, is priceless.
My quality buying has gone up, but quantity has gone down tremendously due to, as stated above, being able to discover "good" coins. And for a person on a budget, that helps big time!

Exponentially more. I would say 95% of my purchases came after I found this place.

<< <i>Do you collect different coins than you otherwise might have been collectiing? >>

Yes, I would not have attempted to work on the set I'm doing (20th century proof type) without the knowledge I have picked up here. Since I wasn't actively collecting before joining here, I suppose all I would have done is keep buying an annual proof set from force of habit.

<< <i>Are you collecting more intelligently as the result of the forum? >>

I'd like to think so, but who knows? But without this place, I would not have attended two ANA Summer Seminars to develop my grading skills, and would not have met a local dealer who lets me work at his table twice a year (and THAT's an education in itself!). To name but one essential nugget, it's that I did not really understand or appreciate how a grade is not a definitive number, but simply one opinion at one point in time.

<< <i>Do you spend more time on the hobby, or does the time you spend here simply displace other numismatic activities? >>

Participating in this forum has increased the time I spend on the hobby. Prior to joining here, I was a CW and Numismatist reader, and that was the extent of my involvement. No shows, no buying, nothing else. A card-carrying but numismatically idle ANA member.

<< <i>Do the things that you learn here increase or decrease the likelihood that you will remain a collector? If so, how? >>

Not just WHAT I learn, but getting to meet many of the members here (like yourself). Knowing I can go to a show and probably get to talk with members makes that trip much more appealing than if I was to go and have no personal interactions with others there. Those things do increase the probability I will continue to collect.

    << <i>Any other thoughts? >>

Many people do not fully appreciate how much they can learn from hanging around here. But they should leverage that into getting to meet other members at shows. Some of the coolest stuff I have seen came from connections formed here. (Still wish I had gone to that Maryland show where I could have seen a 1974 aluminum cent in-hand.) And face-to-face conversations can yield great information that would never be written here for the world to see. Oh, and the vast majority of people I have met in person through this place are very nice and willing to share knowledge.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Nope, my spending level is dependent on my income level and necessary expenses.

<< <i>Do you collect different coins than you otherwise might have been collectiing? >>

Nope. I starting collecting errors before there even was a world wide web, and half cents before I had heard of the web (and this forum did not exist yet). Assay Commission medals I started collecting after I purchased one for an "exonumia miscellany" collection and realized that I really liked the medal. I got that medal I guess because of old Bowers and Merena catalogs exposed me to the series.

<< <i>Are you collecting more intelligently as the result of the forum? >>

Nah, I was collecting intelligently beforehand. In any case, with all the kool-aid drinkers here, I think it could only cause me to collect less intelligently if it had an effect. Of course, there are plenty of people here whom the term "kool aid drinker" does not apply to and these are people worthy of attention.

<< <i>Do you spend more time on the hobby, or does the time you spend here simply displace other numismatic activities? >>

This is probably added time. I'll grant the forums that.

<< <i>Do the things that you learn here increase or decrease the likelihood that you will remain a collector? If so, how? >>

I doubt it has an effect. I'm a collector for life, and I don't think the forum will affect that. Certainly won't make me collect longer, that's for sure. OTOH, some of the speculation-based threads make me want to take showers afterwards.

The people here have even made it a bit profitable for me lately.

Picked this one up today, it's at least a cameo. The white spots are on the plastic, not the coin. Paid $9.

Got a bunch more today too, all thanks to things I learned on this board.

This forum has been a blessing to me in every way. I was collecting crap in MCCS, ACG, and every other off brand holder till I found the PCGS Coin Forum. I'm now a quality over quantity collector and not a hoarder like before. I'm very content collecting copper and working on my 7070. I do spend way to much time on the foum though. I really enjoy when I sell a coin and the new caretaker is just overjoyed with the coin they receive from me. Theres no better testament to my colllecting habits than that.
  • I may spend a little more carefully, from some of the knowledge I have picked up from this forum. But , if I come across a coin I really want, emotions take over and knowledge goes out the window.....anybody need a goodacre saca dollar?....point made.

Do you spend more money on coins as the result of this forum?

    Yes.

Do you collect different coins than you otherwise might have been collectiing?

Yes. I learned about the Dansco 7070 here, for example.

Are you collecting more intelligently as the result of the forum?

    Probably.

Do you spend more time on the hobby, or does the time you spend here simply displace other numismatic activities?

    Both.

Do the things that you learn here increase or decrease the likelihood that you will remain a collector? If so, how?

Neutral. I have learned some great things about the hobby here and made some terrific numismatic friendships and connections. I have also seen the dark underbelly of the hobby right before my very eyes here, virtually on a daily basis.

    Any other thoughts?

The forum helps to sustain my high level of interest in coins, the hobby, and the business.
