Who is uncbob? Certainly an alt, but who?

Sorry to sound the horn, but there is no way a guy that opened packs of 50 and 51 Bowman when he was a "teenager" is posting here. Even more, that he is posting images that are hosted somewhere other than here, and responding with additional imaged within a minutes notice.

Sorry to be the guy, but I call BS.

Anyone else get that vibe?

I'm not so sure about that. I know an 89 year old gentleman who can type 120 words per minute and was instrumental in helping Microsoft develop their new Vista software.

His website (with wife's crosstiching work) seems legit.

Old guys on the web isn't really something "new".

My 67 year old dad downloaded way, way more music during the "Napster" days than I ever did in college.
My wife's dad and aunt have their own myspace accounts, which they update regularly with pictures and silly blogs.

MANY old folks use the internet; most do not.

When the US Government was setting up PART-D
of Medicare (prescription drug coverage), hundreds
of millions of dollars were wasted setting up web-based
information portals to dispense information to seniors.

It turned out, according to the GAO, that about 75% of
eligible beneficiaries had NO internet access/experience.

Hi. I read some of your posts on the SGC board, thanks for sharing. You have some really nice cards pictured over there. I recall seeing either a Mays or Mantle 51 Bowman that you had that you were wondering if you should grade or not. Yes, grade that card! It was very nice. I find this statement said without much thought. I collect modern cards because that was when I grew up and watched the players of "my day". My hereos if you will, just like you collected cards of your heros.

I wouldn't fault uncbob for his opinion on card collecting, though. Many collectors specialize in vintage only and have no interest in modern issues. Baseball has lost a lot of fans because of greed and the ridiculous salaries, and that has colored the opinions of many collectors, too. Some people consider anything after 1972 as "modern" even.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
  • Baseball has lost a lot of fans because of greed and the ridiculous salaries"

    i concur.

They have also lost a lot of collectors with the current state of the card market; nothing but chase cards, cards with chunks of dirt, skin, wood and embryonic stem cells on them...OOOH so priceless lol
pardon the sarcasm. Folks are just in it to rip a pack, flip one card and junk the rest. Doesnt seem to be the comraderie and trading of the old days. I like the vintage collectors, the ones who swap and trade, dont worry about PSA 10's just go about completing sets and making friends.

    I remember you

I took them to Frank Garo of ARROW GRADE to have them graded --3$ a card (all 324 )
He is only 45 minutes from me
When he is done I will get the 50s done

Right now I am battling some health issues ( makes you realize some things shouldn't be put off )and wanted to get the cards ready for my estate so anybody
having to liquidate them wouldn't get fleeced
I was going to sell but after going through them again I can't do it

I won't be posting here much longer as I am not a collector anymore and only wanted to live in some past glory for a while
I really don't have much to offer other members except some of my memories

How long can you keep talking about 50-51 Bowmans etc before it gets old
I know I would get tired of hearing the same old from the same poster all the time

So what your saying is the players of the past didnt live "the good life", make good money or have "movie star status". MickeyMantle? If history is correct it seems Babe Ruth's lifestyle and luxuries proves you wrong.

I agree that alot of collectors today do collect for the wrong reasons but you cant lump all modern collectors and players into the same "its all about the $" catagory.

I collect Emmitt Smith cards. I am just as happy with a unusual .50 card as I would be with an expensive rc. If you like a team, set of cards or a player the true worth of a card is what it means to you, not the monetary value.

Babe was a pauper allowing for infaltion compared to an average player today and he saved the sport and connected with the public

And I see so much worry on this site over whether a card is a 9 or a 10
    Makes no sense

But to each his own and as you you say have as much right to your heroes as I did

I guesss I am just stuck in the past ( and that goes for a whole lot of where this country is headed today but that is another topic for the political sites --used to frequent them a lot but it got to damn depressing )

Uncbob, with all due respect, you aren't guaranteeing anyone left with your cards after grading by "arrowgrade" won't get fleeced - if anything the odds seem like they'd be more likely to be ripped off.

Frankly, the cards are better off left "naked" than that.

I would suggest if you want to maximize their value, particularly the Mays, Mantle and Ford rookies, to have them graded either by SGC or PSA. The cost is greater but this is almost certainly a case of you get what you pay for!

As for millionaires today vs. "regular joe" players of yesteryear - don't believe for a minute any of the players then, if they lived in today's playing age, would turn down a "ridiculous salary" out of some misguided sense of "honor" or "purity"? Please, they'd happily take the large salaries just as today's players do. I don't begrudge them or anyone for simply asking whatever their market will bear. Why wouldn't you? Silly.

Babe was no "pauper" - he made more money than the president (had a better year, don'tcha know) and the public he connected with rewarded him VERY richly for it - I couldn't even imagine the number of endorsements! A case could be made for Cobb having the right to envy Babe's success, but heck, he died a millionaire due to his own savvy investing (and, perhaps, his skinflint ways.)

    /////////////////////////////////

    uncbob:

The $3.00 grading fee is lost money, but I suggest that
you not repeat the mistake with any more of your cards.

Just wait for a PSA special and send them in.

Your heirs will get nothing for cards in Arrow slabs.

And, b4 you get runoff by what probably appears to you
to be age-chauvinism, you should try to understand that
the experienced guys/gals on this board spend alot of
their time busting scamsters. That makes most of us into
pretty suspicious viewers of high-value cards presented by
    "new guys."

    //////////////////////////////

And, to my young pals here:

As an old guy, I can report that there are
at least some old guys collecting/selling cards
and posting on BBs. Some of us can even drive
    a computer, a little bit.

    For guys with money and health, 70 can be the new 50;
60 the new 40. Hopefully, everybody here will get to
experience that new paradigm first hand, down the road.

I agree with storm. Don't have Arrow grade them. Anyone seeing a card of the caliber that you have in an Arrow container will automatically assume that the card has been altered. You may have to eat the 3$ per card fee, but it will be worth it.
