Hello I have never opened the 'grocery' rack packs. I have always stuck to rack packs out of cases. Even with the case rack pack its tough to get your moneys worth unless you get a Gem Mint 10 of a key player! The cost of Rack pack cases are between $1,000 and $1,200 now! Hello This is Kevin Roberson Ebay ID Elitecards with 425 positive feedbacks! I just got back from the SF sportscard show. I did find a rare offering... a MINT 1986 Topps football wax case ( Each box Factory Wrapped.) This case contains 20 Mint, Topps wax boxes with the original thick cello wrap from Topps on each box!! Very RARE !! Never opened or touched ! Most collectors are unawaire that Topps shipped some of these 1986 football cases with each of the 20 box wrapped. The fact is they did as can be seen from this case. I spoke to Dave and Adams Card World(One of the Nations largest vintage wax dealers) and they confirmed these boxes did come this way from Topps. They also stated that they boxes command a premium price due to how RARE they are!! I will be keeping 10 of these for myself and selling the other 10 boxes over the next few weeks. These boxes each contain 36 fresh wax packs. 1986 football wax boxes sell on Ebay for between $375 and $475, however most of the boxes for sales on Ebay have been opened and are retail send backs with the big black X. As stated at the top of my message these boxes are from a full case,Factory Wrapped !! gauranteed unsearched.! 3 big dealers currently have these wax boxes listed at between $375 and $475 and none of them apear to be case fresh based upon the look of the boxes! I thought I would offer these for sale to the PSA registery collectors before I list them to everyone else. I will be selling these at $399.99 a box. This is a steal for case fresh factory wax! Hello 1986 Rack case Update!! I just talked to Dave and Adam's cards World. They let me know that these 1986 football factory sealed/wrapped boxes are very RARE. less than 5% of the cases were shipped this way. They also said that these factory sealed/wrapped boxes will bring a premium price due to how rare they are. I only have 8 boxes left and have reduced the price down to $399.99 each plus $10.00 shipping. I did give in to temptation and opened another box last night. 1 Rice, 2 Youngs, 2 Smiths, 1 Reeds, 2 Whites, 1 Elway, 1 Montana , 2 Boomer and 2 Paytons. These cards are very well centered and of course are pack fresh. From the 2 boxes I have opened I have about 90 cards I think will grade PSA 9's and 12-15 cards that will grade PSA 10 10 that I will be sending in to PSA. Hello Everone Just a quick March month end update on sales of 1986 football cards. The market and prices have been HOT,HOT,HOT !!! A rack case sold on Ebay last night for $2,300 WOW. I purchased one of these rack cases 1 year ago at $1,150. 100% profit in 1 year....You won't find that at any bank! Singles have also been doing very well.A jerry Rice PSA 10 sold for $2,700 and a Montana PSA 10 sold for right at $1,000. ( There has never been a PSA 10 Montana until this month and now the POP shows 5 in one month! ) in addition 2 Reed PSA 10s sold for $410 and $505. The first Smith PSA 10 in a long time sold for $835. Even more amazing is the prices for common or simi star PSA 9s and 10s. A number of low POP PSA 10s have sold for between $50 and $225. It also looks like instead of just a few bidders bidding on these cards, a number of new collectors have started buying these cards! Like the title of this thread "1986 Topps football is Starting to HEAT UP" ! Everyone have a great weekend, and good luck with your 86 sets.

Kevin Great thread, thanks for the update. King 77 and I have been talking about the montana psa 10 (5 new) that hit the pop report. We both thought the first one would go for $1500, and it came close.
I have been chasing a Largent set for quite awhile, there has always been only one psa 10 in the 86. Recently saw another one get graded 10 and was happy to see it hit ebay. I was even happier to sell some blood to buy it.
Now Im just patiently waiting for the second salvo of 86 psa 10 Montana card to hit ebay

Hello everyone !! A quick 1986 Topps football update. Finally !!!! Another 1986 Reggie White RC was graded PSA 10 !!! This is one tough card to get a PSA 10. After over 700 of these cards have been submitted there are still only 3 PSA 10s in the world.....WOW! In addition I have never seen one of these cards come up for sale on Ebay or on auction! I guess the people who own these rare Reggie cards are not giving them up. Does anyone know who owns the other 2 Reggie PSA 10s? With the recent grading of the Rare 1986 Montana PSA 10's and now this Rare Reggie White PSA 10, things are really starting to get exciting for the 1986 Topps football set!! Congratulations the all of the current registery leaders on this set! Everyday someone is updating their set and all of the focus is keeping this set going strong. GREAT NEWS !!!! June is the month to start sending your 1986 Topps football raw cards to PSA. PSA just anounced the June $5.00 PER CARD SPECIAL!. I know alot of us have been waiting for this grading price break to hit. I just submitted 40 cards today. As soon as the grades come in I will post. If anyone else sends in a batch of 86 football to PSA please share your results. Currently 26,120 1986 football cards have be submitted and only 647 have received the rare PSA 10 grade. 1986 football still remains the lowest percentage of PSA 10s of all of the 1980's football sets and most of the 1970 sets!!! Here is my grading update from the 34 cards I sent in for the June special. The good news is the grades are back already. 14 days from the time I sent them out. Pretty good !! The bad news are the grades! I submitted 32 of the best cards out of over 1000 cards that I personally opened from 2 case fresh boxes a few months ago. I received 4 10s .... 16 9s ....9 8s and 4 trimmed ??? How can they say trimmed when they are straight from a pack?? All of these cards should have been PSA 9 and 10s. I was very selective to ensure only the highest quality cards were sent in. Needless to say I was very dissappointed. I guess I should be happy with the 10s I did get and some 1 of 1 9s. Finally got my submission back from PSA. Got a whole bunch of 8 and 9's. Even a few 7's No tens out of over 100 cards. I did get several low pop 9's that I have just put on ebay so if you're interested in those 9's check it out. Auction ends Sunday 7/8.
Trying to fill the holes in the last 50-75 cards is proving difficult but that's what makes it fun.... and frustrating too at times! Hope others of you can do better than I did!

In my view some of the objections that the graders have you cards submitted are rather subjective, ie evidence of trimming, recolored etc. For example I had a card rejected as recolored. So I resubmitted and it came back graded a 6. I do think that they tend to over react at times. But just think how pissed you would be if you sent in an auto to PSA/DNA and it came back rejected. Yet you saw the person sign the item. It happens the graders/authenticators arent perfect.

While I think 1985 is clearly the hotter of the three sets (1984-1986), it appears to me that the 1986 set is now doing better, in terms of collector interest, then the 1984 set. The 1984 set seemed very hot a year ago and seems to have cooled down to average 1980's football interest lately (which isn't too bad on it's own).
Anyway, what do you guys think?

My favorite set is the 1984, so I was hoping for more of them, but I was stoked at the quality of 85 cards I got at fair prices from some board members.
I know Mint state has the #2 1984 set on consignment right now, its being sold as a whole though, no cherry picking.

I submitted 200 cards in early July and just received the grades. The turnaround time was every bit of the 45 business days and the grades were somewhat disappointing. I paid a premium for the raw cards that were "sure things" for my 9 set. I'll never make that mistake again!
A couple of the 9's were 1/1 and several other very low pops (under 4), so that was good. I now have a second set that is the #6 overall set listed on eBay ending Sunday.

Congratulations on upgrading your set. I still have a June submission rec'd 7/9 that I am waiting on. I agree that these cards are graded pretty strictly. That is why I am hesitant to pay a premium on raw cards that have already been opened. It's too big a risk to pay several bucks a card and end up with 8's on this set IMO. Nice job though Bill, hope I can catch you when my submission comes in.
I'm having a blast with this set. I just sold my #6 set (duplicates) and have made my wife a believer. Having broke my streak of only adding PSA 9s, I'm looking to complete the set without 7s and then upgrade to 9s once I've got it 100%. Let us know when you get the grades back. SMR on this set is starting to drive me nuts. Why is the Rice $300 and the Young roughly $180 but no one can buy a PSA 9 Young for less than $400. Isn't the value what the market is demanding. I have a strong financial background and have been trying to get in touch with Joe Orlando at PSA to propose the following:
Each PSA case has a serial number (cusip in the financial world). There is a website out there called CardTarget that tracks the financial strength or weakness (trends) of eTopps cards. The information is sourced from recent sales on eBay. Why not make a virtual stock market for PSA cards with bid/ask, current, volume (population) and other key information based on the serial number to be able to track the value of our sets. PSA collectors could even subscribe to an additional service (or combined SMR and pop report) by creating their "portfolio" that would adjust based on every PSA sale on eBay just like the stock market.
ie. if the Dorsett PSA 9, William Perry PSA 9, Steve Young PSA 9 and other pop 1 or pop 2 sell for $100+ each then I think SMR is out of touch with reality.

Vintagecardprices.com already somewhat does this with all pre-1990 issued cards. They track all ebay and auction house sales and a card database on each sale in each grade is maintained on their website.

So finally the submission came through today! 17 9's, 11 8's, and one 7. Not too bad compared to the luck some have been having lately so I can't complain too much. Most of these are attempts to fill the holes in my set. There are some for sale as I will note outside the grades. All common 8's are for sale for $3 ppd. Star 8's are priced seperately. All are ppd. If there is no price after a 9, it is not for sale at this time.
Sent some more 85 and 86s in yesterday. I'll know more in about 2-3 months, lol!!

It's great to see everyone listing their grades when they get them back from PSA. That was my main goal when I started this message thread. It look like PSA 10s are getting pretty hard to get and PSA 9s are becoming more difficult. Over the past few months it looks like the grading percentages for 1986 Topps football have been as follows. PSA 10's 1.9% PSA 9s 31% PSA 8s 59% PSA 7s and below 8%. Hello Does anyone have any thoughts as to what a 1986 Topps football Steve Young PSA 10 would sell for? SMR lists it at $1,800 In my opinion its by far the rarest and most valuable card in the entire set and of all the 1980's football card sets. Over 4,000 graded and only 3 PSA 10. BGS has graded over 1,000 with only 3 BGS 9.5s. It was very nice to see the SMR adjust its price on this card in PSA 9 grade. The 86 Young PSA 9 went from $170 to $350 in one month. Even that price is much lower than you can purchase a PSA 9 Young for , but at least they are attempting to get more in line with the current market price. I would love to see SMR update all of their pricing for the key PSA 10 cards of the 1986 Topps football set. Please let me know your thoughts on the value of the 86 PSA 10 Young RC. just cracked a box and half of cellos. pulled 2 rice and 3 youngs. Not 10 material but pretty clean. If anyone is interested in the 1000 card lot including 2 rice and 3 youngs let me know. Looking for $250.00 (also 4-5 marinos in there..montana and the rest of the guys. Nobody has been pulled) The box and a half basically cost me $600.. Dont mind taking a loss since I love to rip wax.

I have never opened the 'grocery' rack packs. I have always stuck to rack packs out of cases. Even with the case rack pack its tough to get your moneys worth unless you get a Gem Mint 10 of a key player! The cost of Rack pack cases are between $1,000 and $1,200 now! This is Kevin Roberson Ebay ID Elitecards with 425 positive feedbacks! I just got back from the SF sportscard show. I did find a rare offering... a MINT 1986 Topps football wax case ( Each box Factory Wrapped.) This case contains 20 Mint, Topps wax boxes with the original thick cello wrap from Topps on each box!! Very RARE !! Never opened or touched ! Most collectors are unawaire that Topps shipped some of these 1986 football cases with each of the 20 box wrapped. The fact is they did as can be seen from this case. I spoke to Dave and Adams Card World(One of the Nations largest vintage wax dealers) and they confirmed these boxes did come this way from Topps. They also stated that they boxes command a premium price due to how RARE they are!! I will be keeping 10 of these for myself and selling the other 10 boxes over the next few weeks. These boxes each contain 36 fresh wax packs. 1986 football wax boxes sell on Ebay for between $375 and $475, however most of the boxes for sales on Ebay have been opened and are retail send backs with the big black X. As stated at the top of my message these boxes are from a full case,Factory Wrapped !! gauranteed unsearched.! 3 big dealers currently have these wax boxes listed at between $375 and $475 and none of them apear to be case fresh based upon the look of the boxes! I thought I would offer these for sale to the PSA registery collectors before I list them to everyone else. I will be selling these at $399.99 a box. This is a steal for case fresh factory wax! 1986 Rack case Update!! I just talked to Dave and Adam's cards World. They let me know that these 1986 football factory sealed/wrapped boxes are very RARE. less than 5% of the cases were shipped this way. They also said that these factory sealed/wrapped boxes will bring a premium price due to how rare they are. I only have 8 boxes left and have reduced the price down to $399.99 each plus $10.00 shipping. I did give in to temptation and opened another box last night. 1 Rice, 2 Youngs, 2 Smiths, 1 Reeds, 2 Whites, 1 Elway, 1 Montana , 2 Boomer and 2 Paytons. These cards are very well centered and of course are pack fresh. From the 2 boxes I have opened I have about 90 cards I think will grade PSA 9's and 12-15 cards that will grade PSA 10 10 that I will be sending in to PSA. Here are the exact cards I received from the last box I opened! As you can see they are all very nice with good centering for 1986 football!!

Just a quick March month end update on sales of 1986 football cards. The market and prices have been HOT,HOT,HOT !!!
A rack case sold on Ebay last night for $2,300 WOW. I purchased one of these rack cases 1 year ago at $1,150. 100% profit in 1 year....You won't find that at any bank! Singles have also been doing very well.A jerry Rice PSA 10 sold for $2,700 and a Montana PSA 10 sold for right at $1,000. ( There has never been a PSA 10 Montana until this month and now the POP shows 5 in one month! ) in addition 2 Reed PSA 10s sold for $410 and $505. The first Smith PSA 10 in a long time sold for $835. Even more amazing is the prices for common or simi star PSA 9s and 10s. A number of low POP PSA 10s have sold for between $50 and $225. It also looks like instead of just a few bidders bidding on these cards, a number of new collectors have started buying these cards! Like the title of this thread "1986 Topps football is Starting to HEAT UP" !

Great thread, thanks for the update. King 77 and I have been talking about the montana psa 10 (5 new) that hit the pop report. We both thought the first one would go for $1500, and it came close.
I have been chasing a Largent set for quite awhile, there has always been only one psa 10 in the 86. Recently saw another one get graded 10 and was happy to see it hit ebay. I was even happier to sell some blood to buy it.
Now Im just patiently waiting for the second salvo of 86 psa 10 Montana card to hit ebay

Thanks for writing. I have a number of cards ready to be sent to PSA. I was hoping for the $5.00 special this month. I should have know they would pick baseball for the April special. As soon as I receive my order back I will post the details on the thread. The set is really starting to take off. The 86 football registery has 22 people collecting the set now. A quick 1986 Topps football update. Finally !!!! Another 1986 Reggie White RC was graded PSA 10 !!! This is one tough card to get a PSA 10. After over 700 of these cards have been submitted there are still only 3 PSA 10s in the world.....WOW! In addition I have never seen one of these cards come up for sale on Ebay or on auction! I guess the people who own these rare Reggie cards are not giving them up. Does anyone know who owns the other 2 Reggie PSA 10s? With the recent grading of the Rare 1986 Montana PSA 10's and now this Rare Reggie White PSA 10, things are really starting to get exciting for the 1986 Topps football set!! Congratulations the all of the current registery leaders on this set! Everyday someone is updating their set and all of the focus is keeping this set going strong. If anyone has any recent 1986 football submission results please write in and let everyone know what you got. Also if you have picked up a rare PSA 10 or PSA 9 from this 86 set let us know. I am pretty sure all the registery collectors like to hear how everyone else is doing on their sets also.

GREAT NEWS !!!! June is the month to start sending your 1986 Topps football raw cards to PSA. PSA just anounced the June $5.00 PER CARD SPECIAL!. I know alot of us have been waiting for this grading price break to hit. I just submitted 40 cards today. As soon as the grades come in I will post. If anyone else sends in a batch of 86 football to PSA please share your results. Currently 26,120 1986 football cards have be submitted and only 647 have received the rare PSA 10 grade. 1986 football still remains the lowest percentage of PSA 10s of all of the 1980's football sets and most of the 1970 sets!!! I still say this is the modern set to own from the 1970's through present!!! Please share your thoughts!!

Here is my grading update from the 34 cards I sent in for the June special. The good news is the grades are back already. 14 days from the time I sent them out. Pretty good !! The bad news are the grades! I submitted 32 of the best cards out of over 1000 cards that I personally opened from 2 case fresh boxes a few months ago. I received 4 10s .... 16 9s ....9 8s and 4 trimmed ??? How can they say trimmed when they are straight from a pack?? All of these cards should have been PSA 9 and 10s. I was very selective to ensure only the highest quality cards were sent in. Needless to say I was very dissappointed. I guess I should be happy with the 10s I did get and some 1 of 1 9s. I submitted 200 cards in early July and just received the grades. The turnaround time was every bit of the 45 business days and the grades were somewhat disappointing. I paid a premium for the raw cards that were "sure things" for my 9 set. I'll never make that mistake again!

Congratulations on upgrading your set. I still have a June submission rec'd 7/9 that I am waiting on. I agree that these cards are graded pretty strictly. That is why I am hesitant to pay a premium on raw cards that have already been opened. It's too big a risk to pay several bucks a card and end up with 8's on this set IMO.

I'm having a blast with this set. I just sold my #6 set (duplicates) and have made my wife a believer. Having broke my streak of only adding PSA 9s, I'm looking to complete the set without 7s and then upgrade to 9s once I've got it 100%. Let us know when you get the grades back. I called PSA a couple times giving them heat.

Each PSA case has a serial number (cusip in the financial world). There is a website out there called CardTarget that tracks the financial strength or weakness (trends) of eTopps cards. The information is sourced from recent sales on eBay. Why not make a virtual stock market for PSA cards with bid/ask, current, volume (population) and other key information based on the serial number to be able to track the value of our sets. PSA collectors could even subscribe to an additional service (or combined SMR and pop report) by creating their "portfolio" that would adjust based on every PSA sale on eBay just like the stock market.
ie. if the Dorsett PSA 9, William Perry PSA 9, Steve Young PSA 9 and other pop 1 or pop 2 sell for $100+ each then I think SMR is out of touch with reality.
Not only would this concept tracks real prices but also creates significantly higher liquidity. Check out CardTarget.com and let me know if you would be interested in tracking your PSA colleciton the same way.

Buying Mike Schmidt basic PSA 10's, rookie QBs
It's great to see everyone listing their grades when they get them back from PSA. That was my main goal when I started this message thread.
It look like PSA 10s are getting pretty hard to get and PSA 9s are becoming more difficult. Over the past few months it looks like the grading percentages for 1986 Topps football have been as follows. PSA 10's 1.9% PSA 9s 31% PSA 8s 59% PSA 7s and below 8%. Its great to see a few of you getting close to finishing your sets. Good luck to everyone on future grading submission and please keep posting you grades.
