Coin Shop vs Wife's Career

Coin shop vs. wife’s career

Just when I thought things were going well. My wife has been offered a HUGE promotion from her employer (the Boy Scouts of America). The problem is that they want her at the National office near Fort Worth Texas. This is one of those “you can’t say no to” opportunities. So, it looks like we will be moving to Texas. My partner will step up and handle the store here in Utah, and I guess I’ll find something to do in Texas. Anybody want to hire me??

Good luck. Too bad B. Max Mehl's not still around there in Fort Worth.

Fort Worth is just a hop, skip and a jump from Dallas. Try Heritage...they are always hiring.

Hey, it's the same airport image

I second the sentiments to try Heritage. Or, perhaps you can open a second branch of your shop in Texas. You certainly increase your customer base, and more opportunities may come to the business as a whole with two offices far apart.

I have a certain reluctance about a shop in a large metropolitian area. Since Jordan was murdered in our shop in sleepy little St George 3 years ago, I'm a little gun shy about security. And as I understand it, the DFW area has slightly more murders than we do (we're at 1 murder every 2 years in the county).

First congratulate your wife, big promotions are difficult to get. Then take your time figuring out what you want to do.

In my youth I was a Ski Patrolman in the winter and a flyfishing guide in the summer. My real job was as a Criminal Investigator. The coin thing has always been a advocation since 1962. Other than belonging to the ANA, running a sucessful coin shop, and a long list of references, not much.

Maybe you can work from home buying coins at shows or auctions and selling on ebay.

Cool for your wife, bummer you'll end up leaving a place that has been able to provide us with some pretty cool stories.

Best of luck however you go. Would have liked to have poled my head in on a cross country road trip as a first break after Vegas sometime.

I think you might want to continue the same association with the St. George shop and perhaps take advantage of the proximity to Dallas to do lot viewing regularly at Heritage's offices a little more leisurely before they pack up and fly to various sales. I know that would be my thing if I was you. Maybe also do a liason service for various buyers by personally screening and perhaps bidding as their proxy? If you know coins well and people respect your opinions on them, personal representation could be a lucrative and very fulfilling business for you.

Takes a long time to build a good coin business.
Only takes an hour or two in a bar to find another wife.
    What's most important to you?

I would think about taking your business online. I would not push you toward feebay but the web could always use another quality coin store. If you are online it's easy to move and still maintain your customers.....Just a thought.....

Three of my good law school buddies have established law practices in the Dallas area. If your interested in putting your criminal investigation background to work I can give you their names and numbers and they may be able to help you network in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

    Just a thought.

seems to me your profession's tends to put you around bullets alot. what's up with that???

Good luck to you and Congrats to your wife. An internet store would be good and safe, since you can stay at home most of the time and out of the line of fire......

Congratulations to the wife... long time scouter, former Eagle Scout.... I really like the Fort Worth area... you should find plenty of opportunities there (Lockheed, Boeing - although Boeing sold the facility in Irving.. it is still a viable business under new owners). Also, I seem to recall some good coin shows in the area (I lived in Houston - but still followed the hobby). Cheers, RickO
