Had this ringed dollar concept ever been adopted for use I bet some interesting bar games would have evolved.

I always wondered what they meant by the 'Doughnut Dollar'.

Neat coin but a very generous grade IMO. Those are some serious scratches on the reverse. I assume it is in a rattler holder?

That is VERY cool. I've see those before on the web or in books. I'd love to own some patterns some day.

Spectacular Russ. One of the most intriguing patterns ever released IMHO. I hope you're the proud owner.image

That is a really neat coin. I followed this coin while it was on eBay for sale. The price jumped about $500 in the last 10 seconds or so!

I think Russ's pictures of the coin are stunning. And, as Boiler78 pointed out, the pictures are accurate. The scratches on the reverse that "bothered" me are the parallel two coming in at about 2 o'clock. I wondered if they were perhaps done at the mint but I could see no reason for the mint to do so.

It's also interesting that in the early 1850s the mint must have seriously considered making coins with holes because there were also cent patterns with holes in them struck at the same time.

    Ring dollars are cool. image

Their price is well beyond my collector budget, and I'm not a pattern collector, but they are still fun to see.

And yes, the biggest problem with the gold dollar was that it was too small. This was one way to make them bigger. image
