if Coin #1 is a Poor-01, then what is coin #2?

In a previous post Coin #1 received unanimous acclaim as a Poor-01 waiting to be graded. Yay!






But if Coin #1 is a Poor-01, then what grade will be received by Coin #2. Here's an example where the grading scale could use decimal points... this is a 0.5 I think. (Massive thanks to Colorfulcoins for finding this little gem and knowing I would want it. I DO INDEED! He says the mint mark is clearly a D in hand, and it will complete my Mint Mark Registry set of Morgans in all Poor-01.):

Coin #2, only a P-01.

The coin is en route to me, but apparently there is not a hint of a visible date. But that lovely D means there's only one possibility...

Sweet!!! There are only a few examples of this across all the series where the presence of a mint mark alone indicates the date of the coin. Maybe we should start a new thread about that, or anyone want to start a list in this one?

But in the PO range I imagine you'd want a low end.

There are but a few exceptions where a dateless coin can be graded and nobody though to make a PO-0 for that one. The 1793 chain cent is another one if you can make out a little bit of chain on the back.

I enjoy coins that come with an interesting bit of trivia/riddle.

For this cheapskate collector, the market for PO-1 coins is at the top of a bubble, with major TPG PO-1 slabbed coins bringing at least VG-8 money. Recently, I have spent time building grading sets of 4 levels of AG coins and 3 levels of FR coins. Five years ago, I met a dealer at a large show who proposed grades of less than 1. Zero was identifiable by type only, -1 was identifiable by denomination only, and -2 was identifiable by metal content only.

How can you tell that is a D?

Experience more than anything else.

Compared to the Micro-O and Micro-S mint marks of previous years, the punches used for the 1921-D and 1921-S were much smaller. Also, unlike the Micro-O and Micro-S coins the positioning of the 1921 mint marks is much lower (as seen on this coin). By comparison, the Micro-O and Micro-S mint marks are practically tucked up under the bow.

I could instantly tell from seeing the photo that the mint mark was a D, from the basic shape of the blob that is left (a bizarre talent, I know, but it's an "eye" that results from looking at many low grade coins.) Colorfulcoins has the coin in hand, and he confirms there is no doubt about the D.
