thomas search engine is great for finding legislation. per law, these coins have the same makeup as all 20th century silver dollars and half eagles: PUBLIC LAW 108–289—AUG. 6, 2004 SEC. 2. COIN SPECIFICATIONS. (a) DENOMINATIONS.—The Secretary of the Treasury (hereafter in this Act referred to as the ‘‘Secretary’’) shall mint and issue the following coins: (1) $5 GOLD COINS.—Not more than 100,000 5 dollar coins, which shall— (A) weigh 8.359 grams; (B) have a diameter of 0.850 inches; and (C) contain 90 percent gold and 10 percent alloy. (2) $1 SILVER COINS.—Not more than 500,000 1 dollar coins, which shall— (A) weigh 26.73 grams; (B) have a diameter of 1.500 inches; and (C) contain 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper.
One of my beefs with the "first hags" series is that they aren't circ or commems, yet unlike AGEs or golds buffs, they are roughly 1/2 oz-which puts yet another weight of gold coin for a bullion issue out there...

Yep -- 1/2 oz of .9999 fine gold. The denomination of the First Hags is especially nonsensical -- if it's 1/2 ounce of .9999 gold, it should have a $25 denomination.
Or, if they were going for traditional $10 coin size, they should have made them the same composition as the historical coins (and the 1984 and 2003 $10 commems).
But NOOOOO.... these things have to be a beast unto themselves. It is patently clear that no one with a knowledge of numismatic history had a hand in crafting the First Hag legislation.

Does that mean 100K proofs and 400K Uncs.??
Or does that mean any combo thereof?
Which do you think will be more popular proof or Unc, so I can buy the opposite??
>>
Any combo therof, including any proofs in a "legacy" pf set or the like. The ratio of pf to unc varies, but I'm unaware of any modern commem where the uncircs mintage outnumbers the proofs.
Hey, maybe they can change the name from "Legacy" set to "Piracy" set - I mean the Native Americans would have called it that and there are some ships on there....
Love that Milled British (1830-1960) Well, just Love coins, period.
I received the Mint's mailer announcing the Jamestown coins today, and in small print it says:
<< <i>Watch for a limited-edition, special product with the Jamestown uncirculated silver dollar in the spring catalog! Please check our website for more information as it becomes available. >>
I think they may eventually get trained off of these experiments of combining packaging and literature with coins that are not otherwise special - the Franklin bit with almanac was not all that popular from what I gather. Hopefully they do as it seems to be a lot of paper and plastic with NO coin differences. If they want to hook us (and I hope they do not read this), slap another mintmark on a coin!
Love that Milled British (1830-1960) Well, just Love coins, period.
<< <i>So, is a mintage of 500K low, average or high for a silver commemorative? >>
Average. But most of the time they don't sell out, making the mintages lower. Buffalo, Marines & Franklin all sold out. Not sure what the final numbers on the San Francisco Old Mint are.
The urge to hit the submit button over and over is almost overwhelming isn't it? Did that once before... only later reallizing I kept nuking the order in process and starting at the end of the line again...
Order went through quite quickly here at 9:28am California time. However, both the unc $1 and unc $5 show backordered, with expected delivery of March 15. Just as well -- I don't really have the money to afford them right now.
<< <i>Why are people buying these? These will be for sale all year, right? High mintage also, right? >>
Only high mintage if they all sell. Official mintage will be whatever sells so if demand is low or people get lazy and forget then next year they will not be available.
Took me 16 minutes to get done. ordered 1 each of dollar and 1 gold uncirc. backordered till march.... I read about this set in Coin World but not sure what they mean by "Special Set" coming later????? The legacy is supposed to have one of them I think the Silver Proof.... The mint's really getting in our pockets good these last few months

Yes, it states the weights. You must have missed them.
8.359 for the gold
26.730 for the silver
