Because once payment has been made, the buyer has fulfilled his end of the deal. Why are you so concerned with 'psycho' bidders? >>
No, he has not. He has completed his end of the deal once he informs the seller that he's either a) pleased with the product, or b) not pleased, and would like to discuss with the seller what options are available to make him pleased.
I cannot figure out why so many people think this is an ethical issue. If you get something off ebay and you're happy, then leave + feedback and ask the seller to do the same. If you're not happy then email the seller and see if the two of you can find a way to make it right. If the seller is unresponsive or hostile then leave appropriate feedback. But why get bunged up if the seller doesn't leave feeback first? Why would you care?
<< <i> How has the buyer fullfilled his full end of the deal?? >>
Because when you go to a store, and BUY something, once you pay, you're done, no? How is ebay any different?
<< <i>What you are saying is he has no right to tell the seller his item has not arrived. He has done all he is required to do, by paying afterall. Part of the transaction is properly communicating with the seller if there are any problems. >>
And if there are problems the SELLER doesn't resolve properly, then the SELLER justifiably gets hit with a neg. Again, why is this hard?
<< <i>If he gets the item files a SNAD with Paypal and sends back an empty envelope with DC on it. Payapl gives him his money back and he keeps the item does he deserve a positive because he paid fast. LIKE HELL HE DOES. >>
How often is this happening? Really?
<< <i>Feedback is OPTIONAL.... how hard it that to understand?? >>
Feedback is optional? Wow, you must be quite the understanding seller.
And if there are problems the SELLER doesn't resolve properly, then the SELLER justifiably gets hit with a neg. Again, why is this hard?
What if the complaint is not valid?? I had a buyer email me just this morning demanding a 35% refund because he paid 20.00 for an item at auction that has been selling in Ebay stores for around 13. He says I scammed him out of 7.00. Funny thing is the item started at one penny.
You sure run your yap a lot for someone with 35 posts.
Huh?? Don't even go there. What does that have to do with anything?? Sounds to me like you are getting your feelings hurt and wanting to drag me into a name calling contest.
<< <i>Because once payment has been made, the buyer has fulfilled his end of the deal. Why are you so concerned with 'psycho' bidders? >>
While I typically leave feedback first, I disagree with you here Ax.
The buyer does have more responsibilty than strictly paying. They should be communicable on any issues and problems that arise and give the seller an opportunity to right anything that went wrong in the transaction.
I have seen it brought up a few times, but has been ignored. For those buyers who feel they have done their job once they sent payment, what about your responsibility to let the seller know of a problem? If the seller leaves feedback right after payement is received, the buyer receives a card and is damaged. Instead of contacting the seller, they leave negative feedback. Has the buyer handled this transaction correctly? Do they deserve a positive feedback? NO The negative & neutral feedbacks that I have on my record are almost all from buyers who received something & NEVER emailed me or attempted to contact me about them being uphappy with the purchase.
The buyer does have a responsibility in the transction beyond sending payment.
And it is difficult to compare buying in a store to ebay b/c the store does not have the opportunity to leave reviews on each customer they deal with. In any case... when you buy something in a store... if there is a problem... do you not go back to the store and explain the situation and ask for a refund/return? Or do you just go start leaving bad reviews in newspapers/websites/etc.
This whole who should leave feedback first thing has gotten out of hand. Most of the buyers who hate the fact that the seller doesn't leave feedback first, won't leave feedback, even though the sellers will do so once they leave theirs. The same goes for sellers waiting for buyers to leave feedback for them. If you do your job, most of these people will leave you good feedback. You have nothing to worry about if you handle the transaction correctly!

Becareful though you only have around 1500 posts so you may not know what you are talking about either. I guess a seller with 100 feedback knows less than one with 1000 feedback right axtell
I have 3200 feedback and I leave it when I feel like it. I will usually leave it a few days after I send the card which is about the same time the buyer would receive it. I have never had any real problems with "psyco bidders" or other significant feedback issues. I have had four sellers leave retaliatory comments over the years after I posted a negative. I'm certain these sellers follow the mantra of leaving feedback after feedback is received. I don't care if I ever get feedback but the feedback received should be based on the transaction and not the feedback I left. I don't leave a neg very often but when I do I'm happy to absorb the retaliation. Sellers shouldn't wait for that however. It is awefully dishonest in my mind. You can always leave a follow-up statement should you get the rare psyco-bidder neg feedback. I've had one buyer leave a neg in 10 years and that guy never gave me a chance to send him a refund. He already had a positive from me and I'm content with that. If I could go back and change it I would enter neutral since the guy was an impatient sob.

"no problem.. are you talking about me "being smarter than everyone else"..? if so, thats another dumbass statement, considering ive said nothing of the sort.. not sure why you included it..
i wasnt joking around in my post, i was serious, and yes, it was 100% fact, not opinion.. as a buyer, you can make a judgement call by looking at a sellers auctions and past feedback.. as a seller, you can do NOTHING to stop somebody from bidding on your items unless you know about that buyer ahead of time..
as a buyer, i always leave feedback as soon as i open my package and sit down at the computer, regardless of whether or not the seller has left me feedback.. and ive never received anything other than positive feedback from sellers.. i HAVE however received paypal & credit card chargebacks from scumbag thief buyers months after the fact, and various other mentally challenged buyers that i wouldve preferred not even bid on my stuff to begin with.. "
Perry you are not speaking 100% fact. You are giving your opinion of the situation. That is a fact.
I included the jab about you feeling smarter due to the way you bulleted out your reply to the other poster. By replying like you did, it lent me to suspect that you felt smarter than the other guy (which I often notice with your posts though I have assumed you are just playing around...I could be mistaken though). Your response was snide at the very least.
With the way you have now responded with an ever insightful "another dumbass statement" quote simply reaffirms my initial suspicion. I suspect that you are the kind of guy that has to take shots at others whenever they disagree with you. I am sure you will also reaffirm this suspicion shortly.

And I completely agree with this. Even though my argument might sound like I'm more on the side of sellers waiting, that is not really the way I handle feedback. I just understand why someone would and don't like it when some buyers think that their only responsiblity they have is to pay. I leave feedback whenever I have the chance, whether that means the buyer has already left it or if they havn't. I don't have time to play silly games and say I'm not leaving feedback if you are not going to first.

<< <i>As a seller, I leave positive feedback as soon as I get paid...and that's the way it should be with all sellers. >>
For at least the 378th time, I agree !
No matter how flawed the system, no matter how much a seller may be leaving themselves open to the chance of being burned, no matter how many psychos there are out there, it is still the proper way to conduct business. Quite simply, if you are conducting any form of business, ebay or otherwise it is a chance you take. Frustrating and less than positive experiences come with the territory.
The buyer pays promptly he has completed his end of the bargain and deserves to be recognized for doing so. Anything that occurs after that is a seperate situation.
Too many sellers whine about their perfect feedback, and how the leave themselves open. I have been burned by doing the right thing and it will never stop me from continuing to do so in the future.

Well said. I typically do the same with feedback and I have recieved 3 retalitory negs for the same reasons from sellers. That's why I created a buyer's account.
this is why i dont leave feedback first last month a buyer with 0 feedback buys a 83 opc box from me. I sent his box and never heard another word. all of a sudden i get a neg feedback box was not sealed and suspect tampering.
so i negfedback him right back. What do you know he emails me it seems the strip of tape on the front of tghe box was loose(uh thats from age) for this reason the idiot felt the box was not sealed and was tampered with. it's disgusting first off i bought the boxes from bbce at national so i know they were ok second all this over a piece of tape.
im just saying this is one reason why i no longer leave pos feedback first.
Very true; they just want to do a bit of shopping and have fun.
Most sellers are honest, too. But, many are not. Many buyers are also not honest.
For a long time I have argued here that sellers - like myself - should leave FB first. The buyer paid, the ball is in my court and it is my turn to earn the FB. I am adjusting my policies in some categories and with some buyers.
But, the dynamics of EBAY are changing dramatically. A deep animosity has developed between buyer/seller; only EBAY has benefitted, short term, from allowing this to happen. EBAY is the ONLY party that profits from a deal gone bad; they have had little short-term incentive to help assure best practices on the part of sellers/buyers. Now that their biz model is deteriorating, they will have to take a new approach. Honest sellers are wise to do the same.
Now, we have many thousands of buyers who are making a practice of extorting "partial refunds" from sellers for merchandise that has arrived perfectly and as described. Sellers who have left first-FB in these instances are scr*wed. These buyers tend to target 100%-FB sellers knowing that such sellers will be easy to extort.
Also, we have a HUGE crop of credit card scamsters. They either use stolen cards or they use their own cards and then claim the cards were stolen --- after the nice/free merch has been delivered.
Sellers have no way of predicting what a buyer will do, until the buyer has already bought an item. In an auction format listing, a seller can look at buyer FB and make a WAG/judgment as to what the buyer is going to be like to deal with, but in BINs there is not even that opportunity.
One tip to look for on buyers that might make a practice of extorting partial refunds is as follows:
Look at their FB left for others. If you see language like, "Seller worked hard to help me," "Seller knows how to keep a good customer," "Seller negotiates fairly," YOU can start to make a judgment that you are dealing with a buyer who likes to renegotiate after the item has been delivered. If YOU have left this buyer FB b4 he starts his game, you are going to get the shaft.
There are also some plain CRAZY people on EBAY, who cannot be satisfied NO MATTER what the seller does.
When I was a buyer, I always left FB when I recd the items. ALL sellers reciprocated. If I had a problem, I talked to the seller; MOST inexperienced buyers now using EBAY neg first and chat later.
In the last month, since I have slightly modified my FB policies, I have noticed that buyers are quicker than usual to leave positive FB; this is especially true with lower FB buyers.
Honest sellers are at a REALLY BIG disadvantage in the new EBAY. Withholding FB may be the only logical defense; sadly, it is going to PO lots of honest buyers.

i dunno, but 2 people on this board alone were scammed by one buyer who filed credit card chargebacks.. 2 months after the transactions were over is when the thief buyer decided to run his scam.. some sellers even left the scammer positive feedback because they were unaware he would steal money from them 2 months later..

Perrie, I was referencing your suggestion that the arguments made were NOT compelling. What is compelling to you is not compelling to someone else necessarily. It is called subjectivity. The snide part of your statement would be the declarative opening salvo of "You are wrong" directed toward an entirely subjective statement made by another person. I did not say that my reply was not snide as well, it likely was... just as your misspelling of my name is. We all aren't as dumb as you may think my man.
In any case, you have your opinion on this matter and others have theirs. Just because you say things like "100% fact" doesn't make it so. Facts are irrefutable and objective. The term "crazy psycho ebayer" is neither.

would i come across to you as being more intelligent than yourself if i asked you to learn how to use the quote function correctly?..
since you claim all my posts seem that way to you, let me lay the first page of this thread out for you so you can understand better..
step 1 - i answered the original posters question with 2 statements that are 100% factual.. there is no way to know who is going to place a bid on an item at any given time, but it is completely obvious as to who is selling an item on ebay.. they even give you the sellers ID and feedback on the auction page.. therefore, crazy sellers are usually easier to prevent than crazy buyers..
step 2 - lostdart58 insinuates ive said something other than what was actually said, and makes a "snide" remark about my statement being BS..
step 3 - i point out that no, my 2 statements in my first post are 100% fact, not BS as lostdart58 said.. then you come along and say those statements i made in my original post are "opinions".. but you can evidently offer no argument against my original post..
now you tell me that you were "referencing some suggestion" blah blah, letting me know you really had no idea what you were responding to because you werent even "referencing" the correct post..
<< <i>Facts are irrefutable and objective. The term "crazy psycho ebayer" is neither. >>
ok, so "refute" these statements with a reasonable argument: psycho crazy ebay buyers are impossible to spot until they've already struck and done their damage by bidding on your items.. most psycho crazy ebay sellers can be spotted by simply looking at their auction and previous feedback..
i'll even help you out.. i should have added to my 1st sentence there by saying "unless a seller spends 23 hours a day scouring ebay for psycho buyer accounts to block, then the seller may be able to do something about it".. but of course, thats not a reasonable answer..
but go ahead and refute away, sir..
edited to add - but please stick to the post in question, since thats the one you first referenced, even though you thought you were talking about something else..
You obviously can't follow a frickin thing I have tried to say. You have also failed to address several things I have suggested while positing your own opinion over and over (hence the circular analogy). Further, you are taking my examples as openings for debate. I am not a member of this board to engage in debate. In fact, this has gone way too far already at this point. Your 632,358 posts to date suggest you may very well be here for such a purpose.
Bottom-line: It is my opinion that your reply to the poster was rude and in fact, snide. This is not 100% fact. This is my opinion. Further, you have the endearing habit of speaking like the proverbial "know it all." I had chalked this up to wit ty repartee but I must now concede to you that you do in fact know it all.
Now it is time for you to get the last word. After all, most know-it-alls are highly accomplished at this skill.
I received my only two negatives from a blackmailing @#$@. Worst Ebay transaction ever and it was 3 years ago. Still bitter about it. After that I have never left feedback right after payment unless I have dealt with the person before. Haven't received a negative ever again but I ran into another person who said they didn't receive their item and wanted a refund (pretty quick I may add). Either way, in all my emails I state when the item is received we can exchange feedback if they are satisfied.
Its comical to see sellers who feel they are entitled to leave feedback whether or not they want to...as if they are doing the other person a favor by leaving feedback. I am willing to bet these are the same people who get upset when they don't have feedback left for them.
As far as selling goes, when payment is received, feedback should be left for the buyer. "But but but they may have a problem! They have to receive the item and leave ME feedback first!' BS. Plain and simple when you receive payment, common courtesy would be to leave feedback. If a problem arises, yes, they have a responsibility to contact you to resolve it - but that has nothing to do with how promptly they paid. And, if you handle said problem properly, then they'll be more apt to leave you good feedback too.
If you guys who don't leave feedback are honestly worried about problematic bidders, or shady bidders, well, you're in the wrong place, doing the wrong thing.
As far as '2 guys here who've had credit card scams', ok, that sucks, but out of how many THOUSANDS of transactions have these 2 problems surfaced?
Do the right thing - leave feedback immediately upon receiving payment.

Well stated. This thread is only getting attention here because there are a number of ebay sellers who post on the CU forum. Bottom line - there are much more problems on ebay with sellers than with buyers, and it's not even close. Bottom, BOTTOM line - some people should learn to be a better seller and they'll have fewer problems and possibly virtually no problems at all, along with positive feedback at or near 100%. Case closed.
Bottom line - there are much more problems on ebay with sellers than with buyers
Source?? If that is the case then why did Paypal recently change its SNAD policy to make it easier for sellers to win cases??
Evidently so many here think the sole purpose is about buying and selling feedback. Well sorry to break you hearts but it is not. At least not in my book.
Again if somone can explain how something that is optional can be right or wrong please do so.
If you notice the ones who say sellers should leave first never give real reasons or examples. The ones who come from the other side have stories backing up them.
I personally do not give a damn if I ever recieve another feedback at all. I am not buying or selling it. I am selling real items
If feedback is so important why can't my first question that I have asked 3 times now be answered??
Why does the #7 Ranked seller have a feedback rating of 89%?? He still sells over 10K a week.

Obviously you DO care, otherwise you wouldn't be here debating your case so adamantly. And you don't care about feedback? I guess you don't plan to ever try to sell anything worthwhile.

I think it's rather obvious that if you take care of your customers, you don't need to worry about the odd "psycho" buyer. Just do a good job and you will be rewarded.
Where does it say in the ebay lawas that feedback for the buyer is only based on how fast they pay???!? Seriously, that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard. So your telling me if a buyer pays you the same day as an auction ends, then a week later files a chareback with paypal, that they deserve a postive???? Or what i a buyer buys a card, recieves it, then wants a return, only to return a leser condiiton card? Or what if a buyer pays, tries to get a card graded, then a month later wants to return it for a refund, and if you dont refund does a papal chargeback? What if a buyer is just plan rude, or sends you 100 emails a day, uses racial slurs, or smething else?......... The whole idea of feedback and how it should be used is to let other ebayers know about your experiences with another ebayer!!!

That is excatly what they are saying.
Those like Axtell who have never sold a thing on Ebay in their lift cannot grasp the fact that there are more scamming buyers than sellers.
Again they fail to answer questions. If you are so set on the idea surely you can answer questions.
What does that have to do with anything
It has a lot to do with it. You said yourself feedback is very important, I ask if it is why does this seller have an 89% rating and still sells over 10K a week.

Uhm, how many times do I have to say it. When the buyer PAYS for his auction, he's EARNED his positive feedback. How difficult is that?
Again you are calling your OPINION fact. Ebay says feedback is to be based on the ENTIRE transaction a buyers duty is not over once he pays.
If you really have a set go to the feedback forum and post your opinions about feedback you will be crying by the time they rip you apart.
I am not going to convince you, you are not going to convince me, because all you have is your opinion.

You are highly skilled at both Xbox and Playstation, you love comic books, Star Trek: The Next Generation, cult films, can recite dozens of quotes from movies, but couldn't sniff a hook to save your life. >>
<< <i>
How has the buyer fullfilled his full end of the deal??
>>
<< <i>Where does this point come from? Who's buying and selling feedback?
Sounds like you are you sure are worried so much about it.. >>
You sure run your yap a lot for someone with 35 posts.
<< <i>Me I could care less if I ever get another feedback for a seller it becomes pointless to them. >>
So why are you here so adamantly defending this point of view?
What if the complaint is not valid?? I had a buyer email me just this morning demanding a 35% refund because he paid 20.00 for an item at auction that has been selling in Ebay stores for around 13. He says I scammed him out of 7.00. Funny thing is the item started at one penny.
My Auctions

I guess a seller with 100 feedback knows less than one with 1000 feedback right axtell
i wasnt joking around in my post, i was serious, and yes, it was 100% fact, not opinion.. as a buyer, you can make a judgement call by looking at a sellers auctions and past feedback.. as a seller, you can do NOTHING to stop somebody from bidding on your items unless you know about that buyer ahead of time..
as a buyer, i always leave feedback as soon as i open my package and sit down at the computer, regardless of whether or not the seller has left me feedback.. and ive never received anything other than positive feedback from sellers.. i HAVE however received paypal & credit card chargebacks from scumbag thief buyers months after the fact, and various other mentally challenged buyers that i wouldve preferred not even bid on my stuff to begin with..

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Very true; they just want to do a bit of shopping and have fun.
Most sellers are honest, too. But, many are not. Many buyers
are also not honest.
For a long time I have argued here that sellers - like myself -
should leave FB first. The buyer paid, the ball is in my court
and it is my turn to earn the FB. I am adjusting my policies
in some categories and with some buyers.
But, the dynamics of EBAY are changing dramatically. A deep
animosity has developed between buyer/seller; only EBAY
has benefitted, short term, from allowing this to happen.
EBAY is the ONLY party that profits from a deal gone bad;
they have had little short-term incentive to help assure
best practices on the part of sellers/buyers. Now that
their biz model is deteriorating, they will have to take
a new approach. Honest sellers are wise to do the same.
Now, we have many thousands of buyers who are making
a practice of extorting "partial refunds" from sellers for
merchandise that has arrived perfectly and as described.
Sellers who have left first-FB in these instances are scr*wed.
These buyers tend to target 100%-FB sellers knowing that
such sellers will be easy to extort.
Also, we have a HUGE crop of credit card scamsters. They
either use stolen cards or they use their own cards and
then claim the cards were stolen --- after the nice/free
merch has been delivered.
Sellers have no way of predicting what a buyer will do,
until the buyer has already bought an item. In an auction
format listing, a seller can look at buyer FB and make a
WAG/judgment as to what the buyer is going to be like
to deal with, but in BINs there is not even that opportunity.
One tip to look for on buyers that might make a practice of
extorting partial refunds is as follows:
Look at their FB left for others. If you see language like,
"Seller worked hard to help me," "Seller knows how to
keep a good customer," "Seller negotiates fairly," YOU
can start to make a judgment that you are dealing with
a buyer who likes to renegotiate after the item has been
delivered. If YOU have left this buyer FB b4 he starts his
game, you are going to get the shaft.
There are also some plain CRAZY people on EBAY, who
cannot be satisfied NO MATTER what the seller does.
When I was a buyer, I always left FB when I recd the items.
ALL sellers reciprocated. If I had a problem, I talked to the
seller; MOST inexperienced buyers now using EBAY neg first
and chat later.
In the last month, since I have slightly modified my FB policies,
I have noticed that buyers are quicker than usual to leave
positive FB; this is especially true with lower FB buyers.
Honest sellers are at a REALLY BIG disadvantage in the new
EBAY. Withholding FB may be the only logical defense; sadly,
it is going to PO lots of honest buyers.

<< <i>I received my only two negatives from a blackmailing @#$@. Worst Ebay transaction ever and it was 3 years ago. Still bitter about it. After that I have never left feedback right after payment unless I have dealt with the person before. Enlighten us with your infinite wisdom..
Do you not know how to read?? If you can go to the Ebay boards and you will see it happens alot more than than just 2 times.
<< <i>Its comical to see sellers who feel they are entitled to leave feedback whether or not they want to...as if they are doing the other person a favor by leaving feedback. I am willing to bet these are the same people who get upset when they don't have feedback left for them.

I think it's rather obvious that if you take care of your customers, you don't need to worry about the odd "psycho" buyer. Just do a good job and you will be rewarded. >>

<< <i>All of them Perri.
After all, most know-it-alls are highly accomplished at this skill. >>
what the hell have i "failed to address"?.. please point me to it, i'll be happy to address anything that has been said in this thread..
youre a real piece of work Bobby, you say you didnt come here to debate? you friggin idiot, what the hell did you call me out for in your first post then? if you didnt come here to debate then what the hell did you take a "jab" at me in your first post? no, i dont take "your examples as opening for debate".. i took your dumbass little self-admitted "jab" at me as opening for debate..
youre a punk, you realize that you should never have said anything in this thread, you claimed my first post was "refutable" but you dont have the balls or brainpower to "refute" anything in my first post..
<< <i>I love how tough people can be on the other side of an internet connection. You wouldn't say this to my face believe me. Well, you might once. Kiss my axe Perri. You're obviously too smart for your own good. >>
ooooh.. tough guy with the threats now huh? is that because you dont have an intelligent answer? and youre calling ME an internet tough guy? gimme a break.. dumbass..
edited to add - i see you stayed up all night in front of your computer so you could respond to me within 2 minutes..
You are highly skilled at both Xbox and Playstation, you love comic books, Star Trek: The Next Generation, cult films, can recite dozens of quotes from movies, but couldn't sniff a hook to save your life. You were also too smart to finish college but don't believe in its value to begin with. Am I close? Or are you even way cooler?
You are the piece of work Perry, or piece of something. Let me repeat, kiss my axe. I am through with you and you're BS repartee. You obviously don't understand my point and I don't understand yours.

no actually i dont own any video games.. i like getting kicked and punched in the head for a hobby.. and considering how you fail to back up any of your statements such as me "not addressing" some things in this thread, my brain still works better than yours..
you're good at making assumptions, and thats about all..
