Are you a collector or an investor

ScarsdaleCoinScarsdaleCoin Posts: 5,295 ✭✭✭✭✭
IMHO if your a collector, you really will not be effected by a down market....except being able to pick up coins at better prices

if your an evil investor....well thats a different story...

so what are you?

  • Yes. Meaning That I am a collector but when the day comes to sell I wouldnt mind making a profit or to at least break even. If I spent $10,000 on coins and 10 years later I sold the coins for $5,000 my wife would kill me.

    Both.

  • Collector. Tracking 'value' is something I attempt every year, for no apperant reason. I just love the coins. Don't care about up market or down (unless I can get better coins cheaper).
I am a collector of many strange and wonderful things, and I could not possibly explain why any of them are so dang interesting... (well I could, but it would take an hour!)

A collector who, while not motivated primarily by potential financial gain or price appreciation, nevertheless feels fortunate that he chose a hobby where the potential for financial gain with a carefully selected "portfolio" of coins is very much there and who feels more comfortable spending larger sums of money on his hobby as a result.

I am a dealer - collector. If I had been an investor I would have sold my better coins out of my collection by now. But naw, I'm just a dumb collector who holds on through thick and thin. image
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I always buy a coin with intention to sell the same coin at a higher price but am patient and willing to hold long term. The economics of coin collecting is half the fun. image
I manage money. I earn money. I save money .
I give away money. I collect money.

Pure collector. If I had any investor in me, I'd have sold or be selling my error coins right about now. $1800+ for a Lincoln Cu foldover in the Heritage sale? I bought mine about six years ago for $100-125!

  • Collector, I never buy a coin thinking about how much money it may make me.
  • Collector, started in 1986 with ASE's and thats all I really cared about, until recently when i was left a rather large collection. At first I had planned to just dump it cheap, but iI've got the bug now!.

  • Collector. With an understanding that should the coins ever be sold, they will yield value. I enjoy the collecting process. My time frame is mutiple decades, and as my interests have refined themselves I am seling duplicates/low interest coins/whatever. I do not expect to make profit on the few coins I sell, rather generate revenue to permit purchase of additional coins within interest area(s).

I expect that my coin collection will be sold by my children or grandchildren, should it ever be sold. From their perspective having a cost basis of zero dollars, the 'investment' will yield very high returns.

  • I am definitely both. I sold Wisconsin error quarters as an investment since I got them at face and have no real attachment to them (except for my lone PCGS MS 66 high leaf that will probably go with me to the grave!!!) just to turn around and buy coins that I really enjoy - Morgan dollars and modern mint sets (these sets are mostly for my kids, but I think some of the designs are great!). I agree with CollectingsFun - I have never PURCHASED a coin thinking how much money it could make me.

  • In a word...both.
  • I am a very serious investor. My investment portfolio is quite broad. However, coins are not a part of my investment portfolio. I collect coins as a hobby. I have derived thousands of hours of enjoyment from my collecting activities and I consider every numimatic purchase money well SPENT.

If collectors benefit from bear markets, they must spend more money in bear markets, right?

Not spend more money, just get better pieces or more for the same dollar amount. My collecting has been cut back a bit the past few years just because some of the coins I need/want are out of budget (and many of the ones I want will always be!) If the market corrects a bit maybe a couple these items will come back into range.

I may not be "quite" as serious an investor as the Fat Man, but other than that I agree with him wholeheartedly.

    Both. All three.
  • Collector, but I do like to sell as I refine or change my tastes in order to fund other purchases.

So I pay attention to issues that might negatively impact the liquidity of the coins I buy.

Strictly a collector. I enjoy coins for the pleasure of finding nice ones, learning about them, talking with other collectors about them.

I don't plan on making any money off of my collection.

We all invest in some stocks, properties, our home. Many times without much information.

For most of my investments, I let a pro decide the best diversified way to go.

But for rare coins, I am the general partner, make all the decisions, and take all the gains and losses. I am a collector, but with a lot at stake.

    I like it that way.

I'm a collector. I've found that I make money when I don't try to, just by buying coins I like. When I buy a coin with the intent of making money on it, which is seldom, I end up losing money.

    Collector

When I aquire a coin, I accept the fact that I only can get back 70% of how much I paid five years later.

But if I can make money quickly as a speculator on a certain coin, I would not hesitate to jump in.

    Both,

I collect with the intension of keeping my collection and upgrading as budget allows.

Outside of my main collection I have coins that have appreciated and I have sold to make a small profit here and there. It also helps support my collecting focus. The best part of this is that I get to look at a larger variety for extended periods of time.
  • Definitely a collector. I spend way way too much to be an investor. Or at least I do not invest in the right things.

    Zach
