The more obscure the better.

"Somewhere In Time" Christopher Reeves character has a Lincoln cent in his pocket when he travels back in time.
All glory is fleeting.

One of the Back to the Future movies had a cool briefcase with money seperated by year. Very cool.

Not a movie, but “Hawaii 5-0” had an episode that featured the 1913 Liberty Nickel. It started off with a coin doctor turning a 1903 into a 1913. Then the crooks palmed the real coin from a dealer and substituted the bogus piece.

The show started with a number of U.S. coins (it’s been so long I forget which ones) where an announcer quoted prices for each piece to set the stage for how lucrative the coin business is.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Here's a really obscure one, though it is a tv episode rather than a movie:

One of the 1975-6 episodes of S.W.A.T. featured an episode built around the robbery of a major coin auction.
Many coins in Whitman plastic 2x2's were used as props.

Don't worry, the demented thieves were no match for Hondo Harrellson.

    All glory is fleeting.

  • American Buffalo both a movie and a play that features a bufflao nickel and the Red Book with Dennis Franz, Dustin Hoffman and Sean Nelson.

They are constantly re-running that movie on cable.

For those who never saw it they're having it on

Warning this is a David Mamet play so it will be long and wordy.

Well this is by no means an obscure movie, it is actually one of the best known movies ever made, but in the US it is likely not very well known. In Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai the character of Katsushiro throws some coins to the desperate farmers who have had their rice stolen and that is the action that reveals that Katsushiro is not just a wandering young man looking for adventure, but is actually from a high ranking or noble family.

Of note to US film fans, Seven Samurai was later re-made by director John Sturges as The Magnificent Seven.

Here's one I'm surprised no has mentioned yet:

    Leprechaun

Not only does it center around the leprechaun's gold coins, it even features a coin dealer. The coin dealer suffers a terrible fate at the hands of the leprechaun even though he doesn't try to rip him.

Jennifer Anniston was one of the stars.

In the 1962 movie "Zots", an ancient coin with special powers is the MAIN point of the story. When a holder of the coin points at an object and announces "Zots !", the object is destroyed.

One episode of "The Streets of San Francisco" is about a coin dealer who counterfeits a wealthy collector's proof double eagles and substitutes fakes for the real coins in the collection. Then he kills the collector. Of course, Michael Douglas and Karl Malden later catch the evil coin dealer.

Willy Wonka - Charlie finds a coin in the street and buys the chocolate bar with the golden ticket.

In the newer Tim Burton version of the story - Charlie's Grandpa gives him what looks like a silver dollar to buy the candy bar, it doesn't happen, then Charlie finds a $10 bill in the street and buys the winning bar.

edit: Echo....echo....I now see that jdsinva already mentioned it and I didn't notice in my quick read through.

Also an episode of " The Twilight Zone " where William Shatner and his wife ( or girlfriend ) was stuck in a town they couldn`t get out of. They went to a diner and kept putting nickles in a " Ask a question " gimmicky-gadget in a booth to get a fortune cookie like answer.

I'm surprised nobody came up with the movie that was out about 8-10 years ago that started with some criminals wanting to knock over PCGS or hijack a shipment of coins from them. I can't remember the name of the movie or who was in it, though.

One episode of the Rockford Files involved Jim snooping around an apparently honest coin dealer, prodding him for information on his case - turns out the coin dealer gig was merely a front for his real vocation, a mafia hitman! image

Happily, the show's research was impeccable - when walking into the store posing as a "wealthy businessman", Jim was being shown various wares by the dealer/hit man, until he made clear he was just looking for smoething small, appropriate for a beginner - the dealer quickly excused himself and summoned his peon who (cheerfully enough) introduced Jim to various Whitman folders. image

Unlike most such episodes, the terminology was quite accurate and seemed true-to-life.

The other numismatic TV episode that comes to mind is when Ricky and Dad found a 3-legged '37 for Dad's collection on "Silver Spoons." Naturally, Ricky sold the '37-D to a coin dealer (who asked no questions!) and tried to substitute one he filed the leg off of. Dad, none too sharp, didn't spot the deception until guilty Ricky confessed! image

Lavender Hill Mod was about a meticulous bank bullion clerk at a bank who decides to rob the bank on his last day. Still can't come up with the movie "starring" PCGS, though.

That's "Zotz," and it wasn't a coin. In the book the movie was based on, which came out during World War II, the item was a medal or amulet that the protagonist, a history professor, was sent as a gift by his nephew who was in the Army in Mesopotamia.

He was holding the medal when he happened to be hit by lightning, thereby receiving the power to destroy. He spend several chapters trying to convince the authorities to parachute him in to see Adolph Hitler so he could kill him, only to be dismissed as a nut.

At the end of the book he has given up teaching for a new career, exterminating!
