What's the current pop of the Rose? I feel like I stole this one for about $15 a while back and I know the pop wasn't very high.

  • jaaahm,

Good luck with the 1979 set. Why did you pick this set to work on? What is your first card? I have been working on this set and 1978 because they are the first sets that I remember buying packs as a child. Currently, I have the second rated set. I need to update my set with around 30 cards. This will put me at around 83%. I am waiting on a 450 card submission from PSA. It seems like it has been there forever. When I get them back I will update my set and let Frank Smith (he has the #1 set) pick what he wants. After that, I should have a lot of extras available. Send me your name and e-mail adress and I will keep you posted.

  • worked thank you.To answer your questions yes it was my first card for this set and pick up some more today on the bay.Im attracted to this set for many reasons first and formost as with many brings me back to my childhood as 78 and 79 were first cards i ever got for some reason we all fall back to those easier times.Second i like the white plain borders think it brings out the photos well.Thirdly i have some unopened 79s if i hit a roadblock to send in so we will see how it goes hopefully i will be up there with the top dogs someday soon.

  • Jaaahm,
I just got an order back from PSA with about 75 submissions for the '79 topps baseball set. Man, what a tought set. About 25 PSA 9s. I will send you a PM if you are interested in the ones that I have. Finding 10s in this set is almost impossible. I have three Mike Schmidt 9s---I thought maybe one would be a ten. Give me a day or two to get you a list.

Hi Topps 1979 Experts.......I was just wondering if anyone had a list of the variations that exist in the 1979 Topps set...or do you know where I might find a list? I checked OBC but couldn't find lists of variations.

    Thanks!

I would venture to bet that I opened as many wax and rack packs of 1979 Baseball than any person alive. It was the year I got back into the hobby. I remember everything about that set. The cards that would seem to show up most frequently for the stars were Johnny Bench, Reggie Jackson and Tom Seaver. I remember selling over 700 of the 600 count boxes of what were then thought to be commons at about five for a penny. I just had no place for them. I never pulled any of the Ozzie Smith cards from the commons and there had to be at least 500 of them in that lot. I will never forget that transaction as a fellow brought a mini van over and had to come back twice to pick them all up. It is funny now but I would open these cards, pull the stars and just put the rest in the boxes, they were hardly touched. I still don't know why I bought so many of those. The funny thing was when the store did not have Baseball, we would just buy Hockey cards for the heck of it as we could care less about Hockey but just wanted to spend money. That happened to be the year a pretty good Hockey card was available, the Gretzky rookie. I know I had 75 or 80 of those but you could not give hockey stuff away, somehow I did. With baseball that year the hard cards in my opinion were Carew, Yastrzemski and Bob Horner. Horner was the one my buddies and I coveted.

Cleaning out my card closet I found a 5000 count box full of commons from 1979 that I purchased at an auction closing a card shop in the early 90s.
Quite a few of the cards are in good condition for being in a monster box for 15+ years.
I have never sent in any 79s for grading and have a couple of questions for the 79 experts.

    1) When grading the back, how important is the curved lines in the baseball used for the card number? Can a card be a 10 yet have light curved lines or none at all?
    2) How competitive is the search for low pop (zero or one 10s) commons?

Here are scans of a couple of the low pop commons:

    image

Forget the Kerrigan, the scan shows a nice ding in the top left. I need to invest in a better loupe.

    Thanks,
    Charles

I've been slowly putting together a PSA graded 1979 Topps set, and these are the 79s I sent in with my last two subs (must have missed a wrinkle on the Brewers prospects card). All these cards were pulled by myself primarily from wax trays, and a couple of rack packs. The 1979 is extremely tough one for finding centered, mint cards, and is really undervalued, IMO, probably due to its unpopularity, but I've always liked the set as it's the last one of the '70s (the decade I primarily collect) and I'm also a fan of the 1976 set and the 79s are fairly similar in design.

Bold color and generally good photography. Why the '79 is disliked (other than the noted stock problems) is a mystery to me.

I was thinking about digging this thread up last week and then forgot to. I was going to ask if anyone else remembers the existence of a panel of the Dodgers (Pedro Gurerro) and Rangers rookies available as an insert in a magazine? Something teen-oriented like Dynamite or Boys Life.

I ask because I had one myself (I can remember getting it in one of my 7th grade classes, which is why I can sort of narrow the field.) Of course my cutting was about as stellar as most of us at the time. I was simply curious if anyone had seen any panels (maybe different cards) like this, graded or otherwise.

I will add that PSA 9s and 10s from this year sell for nothing right now, there is no market for them.
I, too am puzzled at the set's lack of popularity. It has all the features of a challenging set - large size, a high dollar rookie, condition sensitive stars (ie, Rose, Molitor) and many commons that are extremely tough in high grade.
If you do get 9s and/or 10s, my advice is to hold onto them until the rest of the collecting world catches on to this set.

I recently started working on the 79 set in psa 10. I have twelve of them so far and I am slowly building this set mainly because it was the year that I was born and Ozzie Smith was always my favorite player growing up. If anyone has any psa 10s they would be willing to sell or trade send me a pm. Thanks

I had a lot of fun with this set over the years. The last thing I did was re-sort the cards into teams and post into a binder. Only have the Carew graded. Should probably replace my miscuts. Good luck to those to make it in 9+. Those tilts are relentless.

I am doing the set RAW in NM-MT or better...
  • It is nice to see this thread on the first page. I started this thread 3 years ago. For those working on raw sets, I still have around 5,000 raw cards from the rack cases I opened. Let me know what you need and I will check my stash. I sent the sure fire 9s to PSA. I trashed the miscut cards and kept the balance. I am busy with work but will work on your want lists. If the want list is not too long, I will send the cards to you for free. I also have some near complete sets (missing a couple commons) compiled from the cases.

I have officially started a psa 10 set of 1979's I know very little of this set, but collected it as a kid in 1979, also the 1980, but ventured over to coins. I now have about 8 PSA 10's with tons to go.

My set is under what my 11 yr old step daughter calls me...Paulie!

<< <i>Wow, Paul. Good luck with that endeavor! It's quite the challenge to put it lightly. >>

I understand that it cannot be completed as of right now in 10 but I see no sense in collecting 9's right now. I'm in no hurry and will build the set in 10 for now.

Its better than coins IMHO, since you do not have to deal with MS64 through MS69. Just 9's and 10's. Really nice.

Just got this baby back from PSA, pulled from a full box I bought on ebay a year or so back:

MINT 9 1979 TOPPS BASEBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK OZZIE SMITH-BACK Card US

I'm also slowly putting together the 1979 set...the prices for PSA graded 1979 cards don't nearly reflect how difficult it is to find mint to gem mint cards. 1979 is an undervalued set, IMO..

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

I have a 1979 Topps uncut sheet I recently bought on Ebay. The auction had 2 different sheets. I only wanted 1 of them. I have the other one available if anyone is interested. It has Bob Horner's Rookie on it. If anyone one is intersted in this please PM me and we can come up with a reasonable price.

    Thank you

I agree. I think the prices will come along as more time goes by and the volume of unopened stuff goes down. I bought/busted some 1979 packs recently and they were very fun and nice cards, but some terrible centering issues on many of the cards..including the Nolan Ryan I gotimage It would be Mint 9 O/C for sure

Down to 12 cards missing and then I need to work on getting some improvements to some NM-MT+ cards that are badly centered.

    How is everyone else doing?
