  • I had a couple of people here at work interested, they were even lurking on these boards. I think MOC has ruined those chances now. image

I make a habit of giving my adult friends proof or mint sets of their birthyear for their birthdays. It hasn't turned anyone I know into a serious collector, but it's funny how much they usually are facinated by the gift.

I've donated coins to two co-workers, so they can try to get their children interested.

Not sure of what their collecting status looks like today.....So, tentatively, yes!!!

No. Collectors are born with the tendency to collect.

Not really even though I try my hardest! One co-worker now purchases the US Mint Proof Sets but thats about it!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

No, they think I'm nuts. Although in 1965, I became a minor celebrity (among my friends) because I paid $200 for a 1909s VDB in EXF.

    Now that I think about it.....maybe I am nuts.image

No, you are are born with the desire. You cannot, so it seems, make a collector.

They are typically interested for about 2 minutes, or at least fein interest for that long. Soon their attention is moved to the TV or coversation with someone not holding coins in their hands.

But you can release the hidden collector. I showed a friend my Type Set I've bee working on. Turns out he has an excellent eye (and FAR more wherewithal than I)

I brought in one of my professional partners. He had some latent interest, and I helped get him going.
  • Yes I believe I have...Today I contacted my Sister and Brother In-Law and low and behold they bought a ton of coins from the mint today...about $5K worth...I told them to hold on to them...I told them they owed me big time!

Well, I've half converted my youngest son. Time will tell how much it sticks.

A co-worker heard me talking to another collector at work and we started talking and he re-converted so to speak. I think he had put it on the back burner for 25 or so years. We now talk every few days about coins and he wants to come to my coin club. He lurks around here sometimes.
