<< <i>I believe in QUALITY OVER QUANITY! With this said, just about every item I own costs a good penny. The most I have spent on one item is $4,000. >>

    Rich

I sided with Bri just so he wasn't flapping in the breeze and I do concur with the part about being brash.

    This can be resolved.

First, read the thread - no one asked you about your memorabilia - it specifically says CARD.

Second, if can't see how making a bold statement, that "every item I own costs a good penny," may pique the imagination of some people - then that discussion is over. People will think what they may.

Last, you say you're here to exchange ideas and not make friends. That's your prerogative - but IMO, friendship and the exchange of ideas go hand in hand - I fear people will listen to you less and less with that approach tho.

As I have said, I, personally, like you ok and find some of your stuff interesting, but come on - meet people half way here and it will be a lot more enjoyable IMO.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I paid a little over 1200 for my 62 Clemente autograph, and close to $1200 for my PSA/DNA 6 1957-58 Topps Bill Russell rookie >>

Did you post this card before?

Either way, the card if off the chart and to be signed by both is incredible.

That could easily be the centerpiece of my collection! Do you keep it displayed?

Regarding the statement I made about quality over quanity and that just about every item or card that i own cost a good penny.......It's completely the truth. With this said, I won't take it back. I'm not sure why it should have worked people up. Plus, I understand that the question being asked was for "cards". However, I can't see why talking about some of my memorabilia should have bothered anyone.

I'm more than willing to meet people half way, but I won't turn the other cheak if someone attacks me. I don't have problems with someone disagreeing with me as long as they can explain their point of view.

    Bluff

    bluff1 ( P ) Pronunciation Key (blf)
    v. bluffed, bluff·ing, bluffs
    v. tr.
    To mislead or deceive.
To impress, deter, or intimidate by a false display of confidence.
Games. To try to mislead (opponents) in a card game by heavy betting on a poor hand or by little or no betting on a good one.

    v. intr.
To engage in a false display of strength or confidence.

So when you say that someone called your bluff, that means you didn't have something as good as you portrayed. IE Saying you have something worth $4k is actually only worth $4 image

    Rich,

No one asked you to take anything back - again - if you can't see that what you said is out and out bragging and insensitive to some here who don't need to be reminded that you have stuff that costs a pretty penny - then you're on your own pal.

The "truth" is not that you have valuable stuff; rather the "truth" is that you can be an effete, overbearing ,boorish snob on these boards. I've only accused one other of that since I've been here and I doubt if you have a 10th of what he has; in deference to that individual.

I'm not purposely out to offend people, but if it happens during a normal and truthful answer, then so be it. I'm the elder statesmen here Rich.

And, the ole days you speak of did involve a more stoic mentality - a little more live and let live - but there's something that went with it:

people were careful NOT to let others know what they made - not explicitly or implicitly.

Furthermore, people were - actually - more civil 30 - 40 years ago - less apt to vent, less apt to let one know what's on their mind.

And last - Bri didn't really attack you - at first - more like a "challenge" and heck - a guy like you should be able to take that.

Why can't you see that there's a thin line between telling it like it is - aka truth - and being offensive to others.

Hey, if we were on Survivor - you would be voted OFF!

  • Stone:
I was fine with Bri and his challenge. as a matter of fact, i answered his challenge. However, that wasn't good enough for him which lead him in attacking me. How was my reply to his challenge offensive to him AND how was my initial response to this whole thread offensive to him or anyone else?

umm this thread was about spending big money on cards and if you live to regret it. Not sure how it became a pissing match.

Not everyone on here has to like everyone, but this is becoming sports talk radio now.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

<< <i>how was my initial response to this whole thread offensive to him or anyone else? >>

    Good question Rich

The statement you made about "everything I buy costs a pretty penny" - did not stick for me.

But, I believe Bri was reacting to this statement and many others where you come off as a big bragger - overly prideful - to the point of being offensive.

Your bravado does not make me crazy but there are others that are affected and don't care for it.

At this point - I think everyone - perhaps - should just read your posts and let it go.

I don't think you mean anything by it - I just think you have a way of viewing the world that's different than others.

It's probably time to move on.

Again, and finally - what you see as "truth" is provocative and annoying to others since it lacks basic humility.

And here's the litmus test: have you ever made a positive comment to someone here who is collecting a 1992 UD baseball set - as a hypothetical? My guess - you would ignore the thread or hijack it. It's just your style.

    I am unoffendable.

There are some rich guys/gals in the CU board community.
They have better stuff than some other folks; mo'money
allows that to be the case.

On the one hand, folks want Rich to "tell us about yourself,"
and on the other-hand they decide he is lying or being
truthfull/arrogant when he "speaks out" after being "called
    out."

Some folks thought Rich was bluffing. When his "presumed
bluff" got called. Rich sort of put up, though the scans would
    have probably quelled the controversy.

I have been around this board for a longtime in numerous
incarnations and I know that it can be a tough place to cut
into if you are "too outspoken" or if you "seem unusual."
The diversity of this board is one of its more entertaining
    features.

    Rich aint bragging if what he says he has, he actually has;
he is telling the truth. I, personally, do not think Rich is
less than honest. Heck, he has admitted that he would
not give a stranger CPR; that may not suit my preference,
especially if I am standing next to him when I konk out,
but it is HONEST as to his feelings.

This thread title asked about "most money spent." Nothing
    wrong with answering the question.

Most I spent this year: 50-cents. Could have spent a little
more, just didn't see anything else I liked.

  • Mike:
My view of the world does differ from most people. Since I know that eveybody has a different budget, I would not hijack a thread just because someone is collecting a basic set of 1992 ud baseball. You may think that I'm always looking for trouble, but that isn't the case. However, I'm not going to hide from trouble. With this said, You obviously don't know me as well as you think. Once again, my first post in this thread was a simple answer to the thread. My second post was simply answering bri's challenge. After this, Bri took it a little too far, and I wasn't about to ignore it.

  • after getting into a flame war a few years ago in a baseball related forum, ive decided to live by one rule when it comes to message boards:

if you dont like the person and what he's posting, ignore him.

you honestly and wholeheartedly cannot change the way a person acts and behaves through an internet message board. look at the many sociological studies on internet communication. inhibitions are diminished...and an individuals willingness to debate, rant, insult and act immature increases ten fold. reason and logic...and even basic politeness does not necessarily translate well through internet communication. let whoever that person you dislike rant and rave, but dont get let him get to you. life is too short (and there are far too many important things in life to get angry over) for such trivial debates. i personally stick to the discussion of cards whenever i post here or any other sports card forum. i hardly ever read or respond to posts that are off topic from the main subject of the forum. i probably wont make any "friends" since i dont joke, share pictures of myself and offer stories about my personal life....and i wont get much attention if i ever decide to leave the forum (no one will ever start a topic with the subject line "Where's MajorDanby? How come he doesnt post anymore"). But, i get what i need from this forum and i offer what advice and information i have.

of course, im a hypocrite by providing the post above. but, i'll start another 30 game hitting streak after going 0-4 today.

It took me a month to figure out how to work it, but

I didn't start this but am willing to talk with Rich since my intent is not to call him out.

I don't think that Bri sees him as a liar and I definitely don't see him that way.

Diversity on this board is essential - even right down to an occasional war of words - a little debate is good.
I don't even mind if there is "trolling" going on.

I think Bri was unnerved for the last time with Rich's lack of humility.

Now, if anyone wants to come here and be totally arrogant - that's their prerogative - but there's gonna be the possiblity that someone voices their opinion about that behavior.

No one is silencing Rich. No one is running him into the ground.

But, I do believe he doesn't see himself as lacking humility and that's his choice also.

But, I appreciate that you will defend his POV - that's also one of the better qualities of this board.

I bought the card about 3-4 months ago. I am not sure if you can get one for this price, though... I bought it not on ebay, but from a board member here (for the life of me, can't remember his name!! but he is a good guy, murphy maybe?) and I think I got a good deal on it. I have seen them sell for 800-1100 on ebay. which I still think is a nice price for the card.

Stone - I posted it in the "Mailday" thread when it arrived. It's certainly the cornerstone of my 1957 Topps autographed set that I'm working on.

As for this whole Rich/Bri fight, let me just throw this into the mix. I've known Rich for a couple of years now (back from the Beckett boards). While you may not like his attitude and schtick (and truth be told, it gets to me at times as well), he is telling the truth about the items in his collection.

You've got plenty of collecting years ahead of you.

For the amount of years I've been collecting, I don't have many high priced cards because I don't like putting all my eggs in that basket.

I have used my budget for many, many different things instead.

I do wish I had put a lot of that $ into 19th century and turn of the 20th century items tho.

But, I never thought investment, and didn't care for cards of players that I never saw play.

I didn't consider a prewar set until 1992 and then procrastinated getting started for years!

Rich, you may have everything you say you have. I repeatedly said that if you do I will be the first to say doubting you was off base.

What I did add, and this is the point that just isnt sinking in, is that I had a problem with the FIRST post you left on this thread. The , I only buy quality instead of quantity garbage. I had a problem with the arrogance behind that, plain and simple. You then proceded to go on a tirade about you are who you are, you are confident, and attacked me in several ways and words. For you to come on here now and play victim is a joke.

SO I will stand by everything I said. You have the $4K in stuff you say, then I am wrong, and apologize for doubting it, but I certainly dont apologize for anything else I commented on. You are still an abrasive, arrogant and classless person who has no interest in anyone but yourself. You add nothing to a discussion other than bragging. Nothing you or anyone else on here says will change my opinion regarding that. But dont attempt for one second to claim I was starting a war. I voiced my opinion, just as you always claim is your right. Well, whats good for you is certainly good for everyone else. Problem was, you just dont like hearing it in return. And you certainly were far from the innocent victim you now claim yourself to be.

When I said that "I believe in quality over quanity", I meant it. I'm not sure why you thought this comment was irrogant, or why it upset you other than you being jealous. It's kind of funny how you see me as not adding anything to the discusson on this board, and see me as classless....because I see you as being the one who doesn't add anything to the board and the one being classless. With this said, I still have not seen anybody come to your corner sticking up for you. With this said, I guess my conclusion about you won't change!

I didnt ask anyone to come to my corner, and yet some still have. But, like everything else that goes on around you in life you must have missed that too. That being said, this will be the last and final post in regards to this from me. I have wasted enough of my time on someone who obviously isnt worth it, nor will ever get it. Good luck to you.

  • Yea, a few people came to your corner for the sole reason of attempting to shut you up. If you call this "backing you up", more power to you!
