JMB and Bri: I'm here to give my honest opinions and speak the truth. sometimes the truth is good and other times it is bad.
In this thread I gave an honest answer which is what everyone should be looking for. If it came off as being arrogant.....than that is too bad because I'm not about to change my style to make you two happy.

i feel your pain.....to an exponentially higher degree, of learning
i purchased what i thot would become the cornerstone of MY collection back in late 1991, a beautiful 1951 Bowman #305 Willie Mays rookie card for $3200, ungraded, of course....i bought it from a person i thot i could trust, as we had conducted several successful transactions in the past, and i had no reason to believe that i was about to be had
i took the card to a local dealer, a close friend of mine, who, upon seeing my incredible acquisition, immediately pointed out to me that he believed that ALL FOUR CORNERS had been reshaped
i considered myself to be a fairly adequate judge of cards back then, didn't really give much of a thought to what a person could have done to a card which otherwise possesses incredible color, focus, perfectly clean back....it was in a screwdown when i bought it, like i said, a person i thot i could trust
in summer of 1992, i took my prize to Atlanta, to show off at the National and receive some other opinions....i went to the fledgling organization known as "PSA", some grading company that was supposedly gonna turn this card market on its ear....the rep took my Mays card out of the screwdown and held it under a blacklight....at first, he actually didn't really notice the obvious work which had been done to all 4 corners, but within a minute or so, and a flip over of the card, the blacklight had told the awful truth....the PSA guys showed me what had been done to the card and even described the technique used to reshape and APPLY additional paper to a card to make a corner look perfectly sharp....although, no paper had been added to my Mays, they explained that the corners had been pounded out to be reshaped and showed me the variation in the thickness of the paper at each corner
Hmmmmmph!!! 3200 f****n dollars
it's still the cornerstone of my collection....i loved Mays, loved watching him play, love my card....the guy that sold it to me? disappeared....i heard stories about scandalous associations in card fixing, and some of the names of the crooks have appeared in threads right here on these boards
that's the most money i ever spent on ONE card....i've spent a whole lot more on more than ONE card.... as of now, all of my other cards have their original corners

Horrible experience, but I think hearing this may make you feel better....
After dating my fiance a few months her and her father let me in on a little secret they had. He had 7, yeah thats right 7, 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle cards. All of them were purchased by him in the late 80's to early 90's, before 3rd party grading. The price tags were high.....3 of them he paid $20K each for, 2 he paid $15K each for, and 2 were much lesser grade but still a few thousand for. The 3 most expensive were the most beautiful pieces of cardboard I have ever held in my hands, and the 2 he got for $15K each were no slouches either. Well, here is where it gets ugly....
He had bought a few of them from a neighborhood guy who he thought he could trust, and who claimed to be Mr. Mints cousin. Upon telling me that I immediately said to myself " uh oh". So, he takes the 5 high end cards to the show in FLA a couple of yrs back that PSA was at, only to have them tell him that 2 were recolored and one showed evidence of the corners being pressed and trimmed. They graded only 2 of the cards, one came back a 7, the other a 6. The 3 cards that he paid $20K each for were all denied. I never saw a grown man look so pitiful for weeks after.
He eventually got the lesser ones graded, one of which was a PSA 1, which he still has, one came back a PSA 4, which I am now happy to say is in my collection. The PSA 6 & 7 were sold off at substancial losses over what he paid. Of the 3 highest $$ ones he had 2 graded by a " lesser" 3pg company and sold ( Im not getting into that one, I had no say and frankly dont blame him, they were still authentic) and the last is still ungraded sitting in a safe just to remind him of the big time loss he took in the cards.

The most I think I've spent was $1,584.49 for this:
I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I paid a little over 1200 for my 62 Clemente autograph, and close to $1200 for my PSA/DNA 6 1957-58 Topps Bill Russell rookie
Stone/Lawnmowers/ and anyone else: 1)Once again, all I did was respond to the thread. Since I've been focsuing more attention on memorabilia than cards as of late I specifically used the word "items" in my answer. I looked in my inventory and no, I don't currenty have a card woth $4,000.
2)I'm not a person who sugar coats the truth. I tell it the way it is (bad or good). Its true that I have made my share of enemies with this approach, and its true that my temper has either landed me in hot water or lead to my share of fights. However, overall my approach has worked well and has kepy my blood prssure down because I won't keep issues locked inside of me.
3)If you don't like me because you think that I'm confident or irrogant.......I'm ok with that. As I said before, the only people I want to like me is my family. I'm not here to make friends but instead to share ideas and stories regarding our great hobby. Rich

RichG, let me be the first to come right out and say it, I dont like you.
You are not a person who " doesnt sugarcoat the truth " You are person who is blind to the truth. Because you say something, or think it, does not automatically make it the truth.
I can definately see where your approach has landed you in hot water and fights. It's certainly going to make you enemies on here. It is an approach that obviously doesnt work very well since you have no friends outside your family, as you have mentioned often enough on various threads.
People on these threads are for the most part friendly and dont mind having friendly chats with each other. I'm sure many friendships have been made solely by communicating here. Maybe since you have no interest in making friendships on here, and offering nothing but arrogance, that this isnt the place for you.

Bri: I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I treat people the way they treat me. With this said, I can be very friendly or very mean. However, one thing I provide to everyone is an honest opinion and the truth. I generally don't get along with people like you who act like they want to hear the truth or an honest opinion, but once they get it they are mad because it wasn't what they wanted to hear. You called my bluff and I proved you wrong.....now your mad! Too bad!! Rich
I enjoy hearing an honest opinion when it has thought and merit behind it. Something your opinions are sadly lacking. Plain and simple, I just dont like you. It really shouldnt be bothering you as much as it appears to be since you have stated over and over again that you dont care who likes or dislikes you, and that you arent out to make friends outside your family.
"The other teams could make trouble for us if they win." -- Yogi Berra
Hey Bri, On a lighter note thanks for sharing your story about the Mantle cards....it helps to commiserate with others about similar experiences, if only to remind us how vulnerable we all can be at times....you can compare this biz to a top-notch PGA golf course, i suppose, you know the hazards are there, but you never worry much about it 'til you land in one!
remembering the big picture, and events like this just turn into pixels
I hear ya Itzagoner. Fortunately for me I was just relaying my future father in laws experience. If it were me I dunno how much tolerance there would be. Then again, if it were me I wouldnt have been so cavalier about laying out that kind of bread to a stranger at a card show. Especially in the late 80's. I was a kid back then and even I knew better than to think if there was a flawless 52 Mantle at a table chances are it was doctored to some degree.
I like the PGA course analogy. Lord knows I have found my share of pot bunkers and lateral water hazards, on the course and in life.

Your sentence above sure sounded like you were calling my bluff! At least i'm honest, and can admit when I'm wrong and not attmpt to put a spin on things like you do.
For what its worth I still dont believe you have anything worth $4K. I think that goes back to my earlier point, just because you say something doesnt automatically make it the truth.
Should you prove me otherwise I would gladly admit it for all to see. Either way it wont change my opnion of you.

Bri: I'll be more than happy to email you the scans. However, I'll bet you don't want to see them because this would prove you wrong! All I did was answer the thread, and you decided to start a war. Did you really think that I was going to ignore you or allow you to call me a liar? rich
It was far more a case of me calling you an arrogant jerk than a liar. And like I said, show em and Ill admit it. Either way its no big deal, it wont change the fact that you are a uni-bomber waiting to happen.
"The other teams could make trouble for us if they win." -- Yogi Berra
When I first re-emerged after college, I bought a csa 8 t-206 roger bresnahan.....instead of buying a psa 8 allen and ginter baseball card (can't remember the name) but needless to say the csa card is likely trimmed and the a & g would bring at least $5k now.
....and it only gets better! I spent $1800 on a psa 9 jordan around that time too! but that's not even the best part, the sheister dealer that sold it to me, proceeded to charge an extra $350 to my credit card after I bought the card....and the freakin company sided with him, when i contested it.
Ugh.....I've never been the benefactor of a great deal....or an "attic find"

in summer of 1992, i took my prize to Atlanta, to show off at the National and receive some other opinions....i went to the fledgling organization known as "PSA", some grading company that was supposedly gonna turn this card market on its ear....the rep took my Mays card out of the screwdown and held it under a blacklight....at first, he actually didn't really notice the obvious work which had been done to all 4 corners, but within a minute or so, and a flip over of the card, the blacklight had told the awful truth....the PSA guys showed me what had been done to the card and even described the technique used to reshape and APPLY additional paper to a card to make a corner look perfectly sharp....although, no paper had been added to my Mays, they explained that the corners had been pounded out to be reshaped and showed me the variation in the thickness of the paper at each corner
Hmmmmmph!!! 3200 f****n dollars
it's still the cornerstone of my collection....i loved Mays, loved watching him play, love my card....the guy that sold it to me? disappeared....i heard stories about scandalous associations in card fixing, and some of the names of the crooks have appeared in threads right here on these boards
that's the most money i ever spent on ONE card....i've spent a whole lot more on more than ONE card.... as of now, all of my other cards have their original corners >>

It is stories like that which CRY OUT to PSA:
"Please adopt a new policy that allows you
to certify as 'authentic' those cards that may
have been monkeyed with, BUT are STILL
authentic."

I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I paid a little over 1200 for my 62 Clemente autograph, and close to $1200 for my PSA/DNA 6 1957-58 Topps Bill Russell rookie
1)Once again, all I did was respond to the thread.

Someone wasn't sleeping too well
Actually my post came at 6:30am. I live in MN, so i'm in the central standard time zone. I generally wake up early every morning, but today I'm going to work (I'm actually at work as we speak.....i like to get in early and make sure the store is still standing).

$250 for a raw 1990 Pro Set Cincinnatti Marino

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

On a lighter note thanks for sharing your story about the Mantle cards....it helps to commiserate with others about similar experiences, if only to remind us how vulnerable we all can be at times....you can compare this biz to a top-notch PGA golf course, i suppose, you know the hazards are there, but you never worry much about it 'til you land in one!
remembering the big picture, and events like this just turn into pixels
I like the PGA course analogy. Lord knows I have found my share of pot bunkers and lateral water hazards, on the course and in life.

Your sentence above sure sounded like you were calling my bluff! At least i'm honest, and can admit when I'm wrong and not attmpt to put a spin on things like you do.
Rich
For what its worth I still dont believe you have anything worth $4K. I think that goes back to my earlier point, just because you say something doesnt automatically make it the truth.
Should you prove me otherwise I would gladly admit it for all to see. Either way it wont change my opnion of you.

I'll be more than happy to email you the scans. However, I'll bet you don't want to see them because this would prove you wrong!
All I did was answer the thread, and you decided to start a war. Did you really think that I was going to ignore you or allow you to call me a liar?

I appreciate your opinion of me (you're entitled to your opinion), but maybe you should look in the mirror.

$3k for a 1963 Nitschke PSA 9.
No regrets.
Have a strong feeling this purchase will be exceeded this month considering the offerings available in the Memory Lane and Mastro auctions.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you find the 1963 Nitschke PSA 9?
The most I've spent on a card is $450 for a 1961 Henry Jordan PSA 8.
