Yankees add backup catcher Fasano
Class A infielder Made sent to Philadelphia; Stinnett designated

ARLINGTON -- Looking to improve their backup catcher position, the Yankees acquired Sal Fasano from the Phillies on Wednesday morning.
New York sent Minor League infielder Hector Made to Philadelphia to complete the deal.

To make room for Fasano on their roster, the Yankees designated Kelly Stinnett for assignment.

Fasano, 34, batted .243 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in 50 games with the Phillies before landing on the disabled list on July 4 with left knee inflammation. He was designated for assignment on July 22.

Fasano spent the 2004 season in the Yankees organization, spending Spring Training with New York before being sent to Triple-A Columbus for the year. In 368 career games with six teams, Fasano owns a career batting average of .225 with 45 home runs and 125 RBIs.

Stinnett, 36, hit just .228 in 34 games with the Yankees this season, striking out 29 times in 79 at-bats. He was signed by the Yankees this winter to replace John Flaherty as Jorge Posada's backup, but he did not live up to expectations at the plate.

They should just give Stinnett a job in the YES booth, because he cant be any worse than he was as a player. Of all the glaring problems on the Yankees he was the biggest. Its amazing me how they have the payroll and resources they do and he was the best they could come up with as a backup this year. He couldnt hit, he couldnt throw a runner out, and he was never on the same page as his pitchers.

  • I still think the Yankees should've held on to Dioneer Navarro. I know that's he's a smaller guy but he's got a big upside and I'd rather have him in the batting order instead of Fasano/Stinnett.

    Topps,

I agree about Navarro ESPECIALLY when we ARE talking about the backup spot here. Anyway, those kind of thoughts are for hot stove talk in the winter!

I am really hoping (and beginning to believe) that the Yankees will not run amock this weekend trading some of the goodies they do have in the farm system. Philip Hughes being the top guy. The Yankees need another quality arm in the pen. It is looking more and more like Octavio Dotel will not be much of a factor this year.

The best move they can make this year is making no move. If we can get Dotel back, along with Matsui, Cano, and that other guy it will be the same as making a blockbuster trade. No need to mortgage the future for now, they probably dont have enough to go all the way this year anyhow, so why bother.

I don't know if the Yanks will make any moves like the ones mentioned...but if it's not for some real quality guys that will help beyond this year...I say, stay put. They are in the thick of it, both wildcard and east division...that there's really not a need to go after any free agent/trade guys right now. Sure if you could get some bullpen help...but realistically, who isnt performing in the pen right now that we're really counting on?? I think Myers, Farnsworth and Villone are doing pretty damn good. Of course, they might throw their arms off before the end of the season, but to this point, they're solid.

    cardfan,

Scott Proctor has come on latley, Farnsworth also along with Villone. I don't trust Farnsworth in a big spot though. I agree for the most part that the Yanks would be better served staying put ...... unless they can pull a Willis deal. HE IS THE ONLY GUY I would not mind the Yankees trading Philip Hughes and a couple others for.

Almost forgot about Proctor. Another guy who has come into his own out of that bullpen. And sure, if the D-Train can be had for an acceptable price, then go for it. He's a guy that will be a #2 starter next year and probably the ace every year after. I'm not saying Sox (either), twins or the west winner should be worrying about the yanks...but if they are winning and in the middle of this thing without Cano, Matsui, Sheff, a strong pitching Unit and a rag tag of position players holding this thing together...but I'm confident that this is the type of Yankees team that can not only make the playoffs, but make a splash in them because of the character of the team and of course the coaches. And watch out A-Rod bashers...if that dude hits a streak or two, you might still be seeing the AL MVP.

  • Great game last night, seemed all our hitters are coming thru. Only part that was shaky was middle releif, but there are some young arms in the pen, so hopefully they'll develop. A-Rod was looking strong against his old team, two hits including a loooong homer over the center feild wall. Milky & Jeter had good night s as well. Hopefully we can continue to polay like this throughout the remainder of the season.

we got lucky last nght. Chacon snagging the line drive and making a dp.

...and we can't rely on big home runs in the ninth every night.

The pitching was horrible between Wright (who i think looks as good as you can expect) and Mariano.

Did Farnsworth get hurt while warming up or something?

And the BoSox lost too. Congrats! I'm getting primed for the Jays/Yankees series this week. I'm little scared though. Halladay is set to pitch against the A's on Sunday and won't take the mound in the Yankees series (unless the Jays juggle the rotation).

Any time you can bypass Halladay in a series is a bonus.

Funny that Halladays name comes up because the Manager of Tampa Bay compared the sinker thrown by Wang to that of Halladay.

Probably not a lot to sit down for, Unit looked like Moyer in his last outing when he gave up 5 HR's.

As far as posting about Seattle, my being the only Seattle fan, not a lot of reason to do so. So I prefer to post when they play teams who have fans here (boston and toronto series, for example).

great answer Ax ..... so, do you watch the M's on a regular basis? Dish? I grew up with the Yankees, Giants, etc and could NOT imagine rooting for a team from a different region from where I grew up. I "honestly" do not understand how that is possible. But I do know that there are TONS of fans who root for teams from far away. Baseball, football, basketball, hockey .... all of them.

edited to say that .... Brian, you almost seem human with your last post in this thread. Are you putting me on? image
