Just one non-immediate family member has had to suffer through my Dansco, but I have exhibited my collection of CW tokens and some related coins in an Exhibit about the Battle of Gettysburg at the ANA show and the GNA show.
we are ashamed to display our collections (low quality) or we are afraid to display our collections (fear of theft) or we are afraid to display our collections (fear of being committed) or we are afraid to display our collections (fear of losing friends)
Not exactly a social type hobby is it? Even the coin dealers don't want their photos taken! Link
I might show a freind a coin or two, but to layout everything I have to anybody would be crazy. Expecially if your into $10,000 - $100,000 +. They might not steal it, but they might mention it to someone and on down the line it goes until a criminal hears about it. Yes, its not likely, but I'll my cards to myself.

I agree entirely about the private nature of this hobby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, that is one of the reasons I go to CS for the ANA Seminar and use this forum to discus coins. All my valuable coins are in the Safe Deposit Box (es) for security reasons. I also find few people have more than a passing interest in Numismatics unless you tell them this is a very valuable coin.
Three appreciative fellow local coin collectors (including Bustman) and one dealer who wanted to crack everything out and resubmit. It's just too difficult to transport hundreds of coins from the bank boxes.
I don't completely understand the type of collector who only does it for himself and shows it to virtually no one. What's the point? Moreover, unless you have a vault in your house (or at least a good safe and don't tell anyone about it), you can't even enjoy your own collection unless you visit the bank. I make it a point to show my collection to any family that's remotely interested and occassionally some friends. Whenver new material enters my house, I show it to anyone willing to look. Obviously, you have to be somewhat careful about advertising what you have but there are ways to temper that.
A couple of lifelong friends know I collect and one is a photographer who took pics of all my slabs... horribly. And a longtime gf. None are interested and I explained if I get robbed it's on them. Whenever I have anything valuable at home (seldom) it goes wherever I go.
My 3 kids don't seem to be interested in it, not even the gold ones, or the currency collection, and only one of my 7 grandkids really commented about them, she's 8 and wanted to know if I'll pass them down when I die.
I answered the highest number because I've done displays at regional and national shows from time to time, but no one other than myself has ever seen the whole collection at once. I've only done sets of coins for displays.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
My collection is primarily paper money and I have exhibited parts of it at the Memphis Paper Money show for 20 years. Also, I have spoken about (and displayed) my material at numerous coin clubs over the years.
I have also given lectures before Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, etc. - hey, you never know when somebody in the audience will come up afterward and say, "I've got one of those!". I've picked up some nice material that way.
I should also point out that every time I speak to a group, I ALWAYS tell them that NOTHING is kept at home and that EVERYTHING is kept in the safe deposit box. Having a wife who raises and trains German Shepherds doesn't hurt either.
No one has seen any of my coins with the exception of my ex-wife and she hasn't seen it all. Two of my neighbors used to show off thier coin collection and both have lost them to robberies. One just got out of the hospital from that robbery. Another friend of mine used to show off all his proof sets but he too can no longer do that. All stolen. Most stores in my area have bars on the windows and doors. No one sees my coins.
I have only let 1 person in my "coin room".Outside of family..............................He slipped in dogcrap trying to run........................The next day we started construction on the pool and concrete walls........

They think I am crazy already. I might get sent away if I showed the whole collection.
Some friends have seen some of the coins as I have purchased them.

<< <i>I guess by all "None"'s voted, That very few have registry sets online? >>
I don't consider an online list of some of the slabs I own as seeing my collection.

A guy that I work with, because he has seen every coin that I have with me to take to the bank.
And, the young lady at the bank who lets me into my safety deposit box.
I don't think either of them is too impressed with my hobby. They both think I'm nuts for spending the money that I do. They could be right.

The reason. No one has shown any interest or asked to see what I have. Its always changing also.
I live by the BLS method of collecting....
