Guys, I haven't cracked even ONE of my packs yet(I cracked 2 of my 1980s baseball buy; I'm sitting on my hands right now). You know how hard that is??? I don't have ANY extra toploaders or penny sleeves and I have yet to find a card shop in the area; I bought a bunch of cards off a boardmember and he has been kind and generous enough to throw in a couple hundred of each to help me out. When that arrives, the fun will REALLY begin. For me atleast, it's really tough to see all you guys pull FRESH cards out and have 2 stacks of 1980s wax not 3 feet from me.
    Collecting;
    Mark Mulder rookies
    Chipper Jones rookies
    Orlando Cabrera rookies
    Lawrence Taylor

Random fact: Mark Murphy has a genetic condition that left him with no body hair. He's bald and has no eyebrows (or probably eyelashes). No real reason to post this, other than the fact all the kids in Wisconsin thought it was kinda weird...

I think I got the same pack as elemenopeo...

    88 Topps Pack 1

    328 Marcus Allen - Raiders
69 Jim McMahon - Da Bears
    7 Redskins Team Leaders
    237 Mike Quick - Eagles
    87 Earnest Byner - Browns
    385 Gerald Riggs - Falcons
    28 Clarence Kay - Broncos

    34 Jim Ryan - Broncos
    56 Rueben Mayes - Saints
    183 Tony Franklin - Pats
    175 Pats Team Leaders
    104 Mike Rozier - Oilers
1000 yd Club #6 Carlos Carson - Chiefs

    88 Topps Pack 2

    360 Ervin Randle - Bucc's
    304 Johnny Hector - Jets
    86 Bernie Kosar- Browns
    198 John Bosa - Fins
    183 Tony Franklin - Pats
    180 Stanley Morgan - Pats
    301 Jets Team Leaders
    223 Robb Riddick - Bills
    190 Dan Marino - Fins
    67 Dave Waymer - Saints
    158 Scott Studwell - Vikings

    241 Reggie White- Eagles
    332 Stan Talley - Raiders
    214 Vince Glenn - Chargers
1000 Yd Club #26 Chris Burkett - Bills

Great centering in both packs with pack #2 being almost all perfectly centered. The Marino & White are dead on. The Allen & McMahon from pack 1 are about 45/55 L/R.

Isn't the '88 Kosar his RC? I seem to remember this card being a little hot for a year or two.

Fun rip and who could complain getting Tony Franklin & Johnny Hector in both packs! image

AJW....these are for you.......I always like WebSTAR Slaughter....he seemed to always make clutch catches for the Browns when Bernie was playing. They had him and Reggie Langhorne on the other side with Ozzie at tight end....none too shabby back then....too bad Elway was always in the way.....guess it's appropriate he is also shown in this scan.....also like Haley...he was an awesome pass rusher.....

alnav, nice John "The Drive" Elway! I'm not sure I've got a copy of the '88 Topps. I bought 4 raw Elways at the Oregon Sports Museum in downtown Portland at lunchtime. They had big 3-ring binders of football, basketball and baseball cards -- mostly of star players. They also had a bunch of SI's from the '70s and '80s if anyone is looking for a specific cover.

Anyway, here's a scan of some cards from my unpack, including the infamous Gary "Loins" Lee Super Rookie!

    image

The rest of the pack included:

    186 Andre Tippett (Patriots OLB)
    210 Ralf Mojseijenko (Chargers P)
    111 Kent Hill (Oilers G)
    264 Roger Ruzek (Cowboys K)
341 Larry Kinnebrew (Bengals RB) -- Harmon's distant cousin?? image
    225 Chris Burkett (Bill WR)
    199 Jackie Shipp (Dolphins ILB)
    355 Gerald Carter (Buccaneers WR)
59 John Tice (Saints TE; ST)

    Nicely centered cards all-in-all.

How about the rest of you?! Scan'em!

    My '88 pack:

    image

My pack was less than exciting --- unless you happen to be a proud member of Raiders Nation (which I'm not) --- Millen, Long and Christensen in the same pack. Best part of the pack was Todd's PERFECT hair helmet. Classic!

Also put in the Tim Krumrie card. He had a great '88 season, but he's probably most remembered in the Superbowl that year against the Niners when he broke his leg in the first quarter. I believe it ended his careeer. Too bad. Also too bad that they got trounced in the game.

Card condition was decent overall ---several a tad off-center l/r

    The rest of the pack:

    - Mark Bavaro, TE 1000 Club (second Bavaro in as many Topps packs)
    - Art Monk, WR (3-time pro bowler, best year was '84 with 106 catches, 1300+ yds)
    - Rulon Jones, DE
    - Joe Jacoby, T (4-time pro-bowler, played '81-93)
    - Andre Waters, S
    - Stump Mitchell, RB (scored 9 career td's in 9 seasons, '81-89)
    - Ray Donaldson, C
    - Kenny Easley, S (5 time pro-bowler in 7 seasons. Last season '87, what happened to this guy????)
    - Chris Hinton, T
    - Charles White, RB (pro-bowler in '87, topped 1300 yds, in 7 other seasons never topped 350 yds)
    - John Rade, ILB
    - Jay Hilgenberg

Let's keep the scans coming guys --- this has been a lot of fun so far, despite my inferior packs!

I have some scans of my 1989 packs, as well as the new 1988 rip.

    Here's what I have.

    1989 Score:
Most notably, I pulled a Chris Chandler RC. It is a bit o/c top/bottom, but also has on bad corner. The other cards are well centered for the most part, with a few corner touches. Score definitely beat out Topps for action shots -- these pictures are really good.
    #115 Bruce Hill (Bucs)
    #113 Charles Mann (Redskins)
    #173 Matt Millen (Raiders)
    #76 John L. Williams (Seahawks)
    #171 Everson Walls (cowboys)
    #88 Reggie Langhorne (Browns)
    #67 Mike Quick (Eagles)
    #114 Richard Dent (Bears)
    #27 Chris Chandler (Colts)
    #25 Jerry Gray (Rams)
    #180 Stephen Baker (Giants)
    #230 Pepper Johnson (Giants)
    #228 Bill Brooks (Colts)
    #60 Chris Miller (Falcons)
    #26 Bill Maas (Chiefs)
Football Trivia Quiz (New England Patriots) What Patriot gained the most yards rushing in one season?
    A. Jim Nance
    B. Sam Cunningham
    C. Larry Garron
    D. Michael LeBlanc

Answer: A. Jim Nance, who rushed for 1,458 yards in 1966

    1989 Topps:
My best card here is Tim Brown's rookie card. It has a slightly rough right edge, and a couple of small print spots. The rest of the cards were commons, I think.
    #265 Tim Brown (Raiders)
    #196 Andre Tippett (Patriots)
    #340 Robert Moore (Falcons)
    #320 Dwight Stone (Steelers)
    #305 Gary Plummer (Chargers)
    #33 David Fulcher (Bengals)
    #54 Chris Burkett (Bills)
    #392 Nate Newton (cowboys)
    #317 Tunch Ilkin (Steelers)
    #381 Walter Stanley (packers)
    #178 Joe Morris (Giants)
    #197 Fred Marion (Patriots)
    #295 John Offerdahl (Dolphins)
    #162 Bobby Hebert (Saints)
    #170 Sheldon White (Giants)
#20 1000 Yard Club Bruce Hill (Bucs)

    Lastly, 1988 Topps:
Wow, this one brought back memories -- I opened a LOT of these! Smelling the gum and the cards was fun. The cards here weren't much to speak of. I got a Jerry Rice 1000 yard club, and a scoring leaders with Jerry Rice on it. The gum was pristine too. image
    #326 Marc Wilson (Raiders)
    #377 Gary Lee (Lions)
    #241 Reggie White (Eagles)
#218 NFL Scoring Leaders (Jerry Rice and Jim Breech)
    #277 Mark Bavaro (Giants)
#216 NFL Receiving Leaders (Al Toon and J.T. Smith)
    #31 Mike Horan (Broncos)
    #332 Stan Talley (Raiders)
    #311 Troy Benson (Jets)
    #143 Fredd Young (Seahawks)
    #358 Ron Holmes (Bucs)
    #142 Jeff Bryant (Seahawks)
    #210 Ralf Mojsiejenko (Chargers)
    #186 Andre Tippett (Patriots)
    #187 Ronnie Lippett (Patriots)
#4 1000 Yard Club (Jerry Rice)

I'm a little late to the party as well... The 1989 Score cards were mostly in good shape and the wrapper hid some nice players:

    image

1989 Topps had a few HOFers. I'm also a bit of a Billy Ray Smith Fan, and I got one in each of the first two packs. No Bo Jackson or Vinny Testaverde, but I did get a Vestee Jackson. image

    image

1988 Topps wasn't quite as hot, but here are the highlights:

Well, my '87 Topps pack didn't have much in the way of big stars, but had good centering. Aside from the 2nd year Bruce Smith card, the highlights are the 1000 yard club J.Morris & LL Dickerson.

The Twilight-Zone-esque feeling of pulling a Marcus Allen card in my fourth straight pack combined with the sweetness of finding Sweetness made this my favorite
pack-busting so far in either the baseball or football venues.

Now, if Allen shows up in my '86 pack, I'm going to start thinking somebody's putting me on.

alnavman, if you are talking about the KMart price sticker, it was fairly normal at the time for retail outlets to return unsold boxes to Topps. Topps then resold those boxes with a black X on the front of the box lid. Once a box had the X, it was not returnable. This was one way Topps would encourage stores to purchase more boxes, since they could return any unused ones, but they hoped the store was too lazy to actually do so. The X out boxes are generally worth a little less, they are considered perfectly legit boxes (as long as the packs are actually unopened) and the cards in them most often turn out to be in good condition.

I'm havin' a great time opening these almost-20 year old packs. It's fun seeing the old familiar faces and names that were on the tube every Sunday.

Here are some of my highlights. I had noticed the sticker on the wrapper too and had scanned it earlier to share here. raba had mentioned that Topps marked the returned boxes. Try to guess which one this was in an earlier post to this thread!

Sorry guys, I had to rip my '86 pack a day early because I won't know if I will have power or not over the next few days due to the Hurricane/Tropical Storm headed our way here in South Florida. My pack had not too much in the way of star power....I got a couple of 49ers, but did not get the one I was lookin' for image

    image

All of the cards in the pack were sort of warped and miscut. Also, a few with some creases. I hope that the other packs are all perfect cause this one sure left something to be desired.

Arthur, hopefully once everyone's home from work (image right?!), we'll have some more results.

I'm on a week's vacation hanging out around the house. I've had time for some fun stuff besides all the work around the place I'm trying to catch up with. I'm a Libra, so I've got to have some balance.

Well, I was actually disappointed not to find Marcus Allen in my '86 pack. I had to do a double take on the Steve Young. I thought for a second that it must be a different Steve Young. Overall, the cards were in really nice shape, the best of my packs so far for condition. I'll probably get these three graded the next time I can do so cheaply.

Steve: My face mask is too big.

Joe: My face mask is too small.

Phil: My face mask is just right.
