These Score cards are sure colorful! Wish I would've bought more of them "back in the day".

What I got in the bonus pack included:

    114 Richard Dent (Bears)
    117 Mark Collins (Giants)
    147 John Anderson (Packers)
    63 Ickey Woods (Bengals)
    64 Gary Anderson (Chargers)
    73 Ricky Natiel (Broncos)
    173 Matt Millen (Raiders)
    174 Karl Mecklenburg (Broncos)
    175 Paul Palmer (Chiefs)
    22 Dave Duerson (Bears)
    23 Troy Stradford (Dolphins)
    24 Freeman McNeil (Jets)
308 Tim Krumrie - All Pro (Bengals)
309 Anthony Munoz - All Pro (Bengals)
310 Darrell Green - Speedburner (Redskins)

I listed the cards pretty much in the order they came in the pack. Interesting collation!

Oh yeah, the Football Trivia Card (Bears) reads:
"Name the player who gained the most yards rushing in one game."
    A. O.J. Simpson
    B. Walter Payton
    C. Jim Brown
    D. Franco Harris

    (answer below)

The '89Topps pack gave up the following:
    334 Ricky Reynolds (Buccaneers)
    260 Art Monk (Redskins)
    23 Bengals Team
139 Frank Minniefield - All Pro (Browns)
    390 Steve Pelluer (Cowboys)
    258 Gary Clark (Redskins)
    81 Steve Jordan (Vikings)
    12 1000-yard Club Mark Clayton
    303 Chargers Team
    161 Gene Atkins (Saints)
    236 Roger Vick (Jets)
241 John Elway (Broncos) -- a potential Gem Mint card! I'll have to scan this one.
    167 Bart Oates (Giants)
    306 Gary Anderson (Chargers)
219 1988 NFL Rushing Leaders (Herschel Walker / Eric Dickerson)
365 Bennie Blades (wax stain on back)

It's fun slowing down, opening a pack, and thoroughly enjoying each card -- like in Stone's picture of the boys back in '63...

Trivia answer: "B. Payton of the Bears, with 275 yards against the Vikings (of course) in '77." Is this answer still correct?? I believe it is...

Fortunately, I HAD Lewis in my fantasy lineup he broke the record, 295 yards and two scores against the Browns. A defensive player talking smack from the Browns said he hoped Lewis got 30 carries so he could punish him. Lewis responded by saying if he got 30 carries he'd break Dillon's record. Sure enough, he did exactly that. Oddly enough, he also had a 60 TD called back in the first half on a holding penalty that had nothing to do with the play!!! That would have given him a lot more yards. He rushed for 205 against the Browns later in the year, becoming the first player to rush for 500 yards against a team in one year.

    Think that'll happen again??? Wow.

As for my packs, not much, but a total blast to open. Like I said earlier, I didn't start collecting football until after I "returned" to the hobby, so all of these packs are something I've never opened before.

    My 1989 topps pack included:
    Craig Hewyard
    Darryl Clack
Bell Runs for Glory-Los Angeles Rams Team card with Greg Bell
    Jim McMahon
    Jeff Donaldson
    Sterling Sharpe
    James Jones
    Lonzell Hill
    Mark Clayton -1000 yard club
    Jim Breech
    Boomer Esiason
    Mark Collins
    Vance Johnson
    John Stephens
    Robb Riddick
    Curtis Duncan

Apparantely you sent me the wrong bonus pack because I was suppose to get a Carter, Sanders, Irvin, and Aikman, but didn't get anything.image

    Johnny Hector
    Tony Casillas
    Kyle Clifton
    Cornelius Bennett
    Neal Anderson
Ickey Woods-What happened to Ickey and the Ickey Shuffle??
    Steve At water-rookie
    Billy Ray Smith
    Fred Marion
    Mark Duper
    Merril Hoge
    Reggie White
    Roger Craig
    Boomer Esiason
    Steve Young

Now if only I get a Reggie White and Steve Young in the '86 pack...............

The Young is PSA 10 quality, I'll get a scan up soon

    shawn

Edited to say...LOL, I had to seperate Steve A T W A T E R in my post because the 2nd through 5th letters make a forbidden word and PSA wouldn't let me type it. Ha!!

Really enjoyed opening these packs. A good start. I was happy to pick up the Joe Montana RB, but disappointed by the print marks or whatever in the border, ditto with the Landry. I was a little weird to find Marcus Allen in both packs.

    89 Score Pack 1

Jerry Rice, Reggie White, SBXXIII card featuring Montana, Tim Brown, Henry Ellard & Bruce Smith along with 9 other also rans.

Great pack with great centering but most cards are touched on at least one corner.

    89 Score Pack 2

Marcus Allen, Drew Hill, Don Beebe RC, Jessie Small RC? and the assorted commons.

Not as good as pack one but centering and corners are dead on.

    89 Topps Pack 1

A pretty nice Warren Moon card and the rest commons.

Very nice centering and corners accept on the 1000 yard club Curt Warner which is way OC L-R.

    89 Topps Pack 2

Nice 88 Rushing Leaders Walker/Dickerson, Rod Woodson, D.J. Dozier (liked the name), Brian Blades Super Rookie and a Joe Morris 1000 yd. club.

    Again perfect corners and centering.

No complaints here on the first round.

Not off to a fantastic start, but not entirely bad, either. The score pack was a blast to bust. For some reason I don't remember buying many of these in "the day" --- I was 13 at the time and 1989 was the height of my collecting years.

    image

Love the Montana/Rice card -- cool to see them together.
Also interesting to get both Matthews brothers in the same pack [18 pro-bowls between them].

Overall quality of the cards was AWESOME. Great centering, razor sharp corners. I imagine there's more than a few 10's among these, especially in the Score pack.

Here's the rest (with a few extra facts a la Zef):

    1989 Score:
    - Eddie Brown, WR
    - Rodney Holman, TE
    - Dave Krieg, QB [38,000 passing yds over 19 nfl seasons]
    - Steve Pelleur, QB
    - Jim Everett, QB
    - Bill Hawkins, DE *rookie* [42 nfl games, 5 career sacks, done after '92]
    - Terry Kinard, FS
    - Bruce Armstrong, OT [6-time pro-bowler, played '87-'00]
    - Lionel Manuel, WR
    - JT Smith, WR
    - Combos: Millard/Doleman

    1989 Topps:
    - Carl Ekern, ILB
    - Lars Tate, RB
    - David Tate, CB
    - Warren Williams, RB
    - Mark Bavaro, TE
    - Mickey Shuler, TE [played 14 yrs, 2 time pro-bowl]
    - David Galloway, DE
    - Henry Ellard, 1000 Yard Club
    - Reggie Langhorne, WR
    - Hanford Dixon, CB ['89 was final season, 3-time pro-bowler]
    - Kevin Greene, OLB [5 time pro-bowler, played '85-'99]
    - Ray Berry, LB
    - Tony Zendejas, K
    - Carl Lee, CB [3 time pro-bowler, played '83-'94]
    - Johnny Meads, OLB

Good times. Can't wait for next week!

<< <i>The score pack was a blast to bust. For some reason I don't remember buying many of these in "the day" --- I was 13 at the time and 1989 was the height of my collecting years.
    >>

i think most of us were counting on ProSet to be the big money set that year.. image i was also 13 or 14 at the time and i distinctly remember being at a mall card show when score and proset had just came out.. dealers were telling me how nice the proset cards were was and it seemed to be the hottest item moving, i think i probably bought a wax box that day but i dont remember.. i know i somehow ended up with a 5000ct box of 1989 proset singles by the mid-90's though..

but yeah i pretty much ignored the 1989 score.. image

Funny, I do remember buying a TON of ProSet and virtually no Score football during the 89-92 years. Remember the Rocket Ismail card --- it was all the rage.

I think Pro Set was big because everyone was looking for that damn stupid hologram.

I haven't seen any Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin or Tim Brown rookies just yet though. Those could be sittin' out there!

Oh snap...I was thinking about 1990 Pro Set with the hologram.
Well, for 1989 Pro Set, everyone was looking for all the error cards, especially the William Perry and they were also looking for the Santa Clause card. This kind of put Score on the back burner for everyone. Plus, Pro Set also came out in 3 series....kept collectors attention.

Great breaks so far, guys! I'd *love* to see some more scans, though. I really like the design of the 89 Topps and Score cards.

Ah yes 89 Score, was ignored by a lot of us. But boy did they let the pritting presses run on the 90 set. How many got burned by that one??

Anyone care to provide a "Tuesday Warm-up" to get us ready for the '88's?

    Top cards to chase?
    Thoughts on the set?
    What people chased in '88?

... i'm not knowledgable enough about late 80's football or I'd do it myself.... just thought it might be a nice teaser for tomorrow.

A quick check of PSA's weighing of the set.

Seems the Bo Jackson & Vinny Testaverde rookie cards are topps with the usual stars weighing more than singles.

The Bo Jackson rookie was the card everyone looked for in '88. It is still the most expensive card in the set. There are only a couple rookies in this set; Vinnie Testaverde, Brian Bosworth and Kevin Green. They are nice looking cards but the set doesn't have much value.

Thanks guys ... that info is great --- adds to the thread, IMO.

... I remember The Boz and all the hype that surrounded him... and what year was it that Bo ran out the back of the endzone and into the tunnel on MNF.

Ahh, the late 80s --- I miss 'em.

FavreFan1971, I'm going to send you a PM with scans of a couple 1986 McD's Packers. Send me your address if you want them. I'm a Vikes (and Broncos!) fan, so I sure as heck don't want 'em! image

I just checked the population reports and noticed that the next pack, the '88 Topps, has the last Walter Payton card. That'd be a cool card to have...

I thought it was odd to find Marcus Allen in both of my '89 packs... Today, he shows up again in the '88 pack. Go figure. Maybe I should start a basic player set on the registry.
