It's a wrap now. This series was the Braves last chance to get into the picture with a sweep. Instead, Mets go for the sweep tomorrow. My only concern now is can they ramp it up again come October cause the next 60 games are essentially meaningless for them. At least it'll give them every chance to get Pedro fully rested and 100% for the playoffs.

Normally, I'd agree with you, but these chicks are out of the shell now! The Mets could play under .500 the rest of the way and still win the division by a comfortable margin. It's not so much the 13.5 game lead they have (because teams have blown leads that large before, albeit very rarely), but rather the lack of talent in the rest of the NL East. I truly doubt that any team other than the Mets even finishes above .500 in that division.

The Mets need to put the Braves to sleep and it is looking pretty good right now. DO NOT let the Braves have any real thoughts about post season play ......
About the huge layoff of meaningless games with a huge lead. I can tell you about that as the Yankees encountered this many times in the past 10 years. KEEP the starting staff FRESH, DON'T overwork the pen ....... and good luck!
Back in 1998 when the Yankees STEAM ROLLED the entire regular season it was very TENSE that first round of playoffs ..... the LAST thing Yankee fans and the Yankees wanted to happen was to $hit the bed in the 5 game divisional series ...... nobody wants to end up like the Mariners team that won every day during the regular season only to go down in flames before the BIG SHOW.
I echo what soft said. It seems that when teams clinch early and "coast" to the postseason that they are occasionally less than sharp when the playoffs start. That said, I feel only the Cards have talent on par with the Mets this year, though I'd rather not see the Braves in the postseason either if they wind up snatching the wildcard.
The point about the bullpen is a good one. If there's one thing that has troubled me this year, it's that Willie has really worked the bullpen. The Mets' relievers have pitched more innings than any other team in the NL and I'd like to see them rest the bullpen a bit more as the bullpen is one of the main reasons they are in first place this year (what a trade Sanchez for seo turned out to be!).
Delgado left the game early yesterday but had a 2-run HR in the first inning today! Go Mets!

The Mets could use another bonafide starter, but there aren't too many available right now. Zito looks to be staying put and I don't think you give up Milledge or Pelfry for any other starter right now. The Mets are reluctant to get burned again like they did when they traded Kazmir for Zambrano. Right now, with the way El Duque and Maine have pitched, I don't think they have to make a move anyway. And in the postseason they'll need only 4 starters anyway.

Sweep complete! Anyone know offhand what the record is for largest margin of games for a team winning its division?

Thanks, lawnmowerman! I doubt these Mets will win the East by that wide a margin but the 86 mark of 21.5 games may be in reach!

Well, in the pathetic NL West, the Mariners may have a shot at finishing .500, which might win the division for them!

LOL, soft, yes, Jerry was the first player I idolized as a kid. In my eyes, he was a superstar. When I looked up his actual career stats later in life, I thought they had him mixed up with someone else (though he did call a great game)!

Good to see the Mets doing well, as an ex-New Yorker, although primarily a Yanks fan. What I like about their prospects to keep it going and not fold is their stellar record on the road. Their road W% is actually better than their home W%.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

The same dope that predicted that also predicted that the yanks would finish lower then the blue jays.
i wonder what happened?
hmmmmmmmmm?
as for the pitching, the mets are going to be fine. That kid maine and the other kid pelfry will fill any void.
I'd like to see the twins make it to the ws , that would blow another prediction regarding payroll into the water as well.
