I hear ya on this. Gibby is a "by the book" guy. My impression is he does little by "feel" and almost everything by stats and percentages. But most of the players - aside from Hillenbrand - seem to love the guy and play hard for him, so that's all I can ask for as a fan.
I may be talking to myself with some of my Blue Jay posts, but hey, what the heck. Great series for them this weekend. No room for gloating though. The Yanks have the Jays in the House That Ruth Built next week and there could be payback. Some good news for the Jays though. Rios will start a rehab stint today or tomorrow and is expected to be in the Jays lineup for Thursday. Also, with Hillenbrand gone, the Jays are saying they will switch Catalanotto to the DH spot. Great move. Cat is hitting over .320 with an OBP over .420. That also makes the bench stronger with Hinske (10 HRs in 150 ABs) and Zaun.
I see the Jays overtaking the yankees and pushing them to third in the divison...and Wells continues to be huge. Too bad he gets no press here. Can you imaging the coverage he'd be getting if he was playing in Boston or NY?

I agree with you about Wells. I think (and of course, I'm biased) that you could make a case for him for being the league MVP this year. Hitting over .310 with 25+ HRs and Gold Glove defense. All that and I can buy a PSA 9 Bowman Chrome Wells rookie for $10 on eBay. Reed Johnson is another guy who is having a great season without anyone noticing. Hitting over .340 with a .430 OBP and playing Gold Glove defense as well.
I am still following your posts Writer...I will try and jump in more often.
Plenty of Jays having nice seasons: Halladay, Ryan, Overbay, Wells, Hill, Cat, Johnson. Hell, some guy even complimented Ernie Whitt (Jays bench coach) the other day... said Ernie was the best in the league at calling pitch outs, etc from the dugout.
Me? I think Paul Godfrey is the Jays MVP this season.

Wells would get my vote for MVP so far this year. He is an absolute monster. I also think he is getting a decent amount of press and coverage lately. It seems they are talking about him every day somewhere around here either on TV or the radio.
One thing that kinda made me upset was hearing them talk about him on the YES network during the games against the Yanks. They mentioned several times that when Wells is up for free agency that they could see him in a Yankee uniform. Now, dont get me wrong, the guy is one of my favorites, and I would LOVE to have him on my team, but it really is annoying how the announcers on YES talked about it.
The guy is a Blue Jay, and the city of Toronto deserves to have him on their team. They seriously act like every player is destined to wear a Yankee uniform, and it just isnt right. This was one of my main reasons against wanting Arod. Enough is enough sometimes. Just leave things as they are, let the guy and the fans enjoy his time in Toronto no matter how long it is and stop the nonsense and campaigning for him to come to NY.
One last thought. The Jays have some nice young arms in their bullpen. I was really impressed with how they come at the hitters and have a game plan on the mound. I was amazed to hear they have 4 lefties in the pen, that is very rare these days.

Bri,
We don't get the YES network up here in Canada, so I don't get to listen to the broadcasters often enough to have an opinion. From everything I've heard, Wells will end up in Texas after next season. Wells lives near Dallas and his best friend in baseball is Michael Young. I think Toronto has about a 40% chance of retaining him.
The Jays have a few decent arms in the pen. Speier, despite walking in a run on Saturday, is a machine. He has to be one of the best setup guys in baseball. He's a free agent after this season as well. I could see him end up in New York. BJ Ryan has been out of this world good.
I like Proctor on the Yankees. I really think next year at this time, Proctor is going to be unhittable. I hope the Yanks don't deal him away, but if they do, the Jays could use him I was also really impressed by Cabrera. That kid just seems to have baseball smarts. He was stealing bases in pressure situations and played a great outfield in the series.

It's not just yankee announcers guilty of this (although they are big culprits). The fans have become so accustomed to every year signing some big free agent, they feel entitled to think everyone is coming to NY.
Last year it was Johnny Damon, 2004 it was Randy Johnson and Arod...so on and so forth.

Overbay's having another monster game, 3 for 4 tonight.
A good win for the Jays last night. Hinske with two more hits. Reed Johnson with three more hits. No ground gained on the Yankees or Red Sox, but they did gain a game on the ChiSox. Halladay is now 13-2.

Hey, good to see you.
Chacin, I've heard, is supposed to start rehabbing this week. That likely means he won't be back until the second week of August. I'm guessing on that, but I don't think the Jays are providing a definite time table.
Yeah, the bullpen has indeed blown some games that Halladay should have won. I think it is going to be tough to top Francisco Liriano in the Cy Young Voting though. Liriano's ERA is under 2.00. Then there is Jerrod Weaver on the Angels 7-0 and a 1.15 (or so) ERA in his first seven starts. Both are rookies.
Noticed a new thread on here discussing the wide open race for the AL wild card....Twins, ChiSox, Yankees all discussed as contenders (and the all most certainly are), but, alas, not a single mention of the Blue Jays.....
Maybe it is just us....maybe the Jays really are pretenders as opposed to legitimate contenders. I dunno.

I'll vouch for soft. He always gives the Jays proper respect.
Well, that might have been the toughest loss of the season yesterday. Glaus hits a grand slam in the first inning and the Jays still lose. UGH... The Jays badly need a starting pitcher. But not Corey Lidle at the expense of a decent prospect ... I'd rather see Casey Janssen or Dustin McGowan in their every fifth game than for the Jays to trade one of them for Lidle.
Actually Writer, I think JP realizes that it is not going to happen this year (at least a playoff spot won't be happening) and it wouldn't surprise me if one or two "contracts" get moved out in order to give him more $ to utilize in the off-season. I think a guy like Molina will be moved (actually he may only be on an expiring one-year deal anyway....not sure), and perhaps even Wells if JP senses that he will not resign.
Eyebone
"I'm not saying I'm the best manager in the world, but I'm in the top one." Brian Clough
Eyebone, I completely agree with you, he's got to stand pat (just like Gillick used to do every year until the last few). Lidle was garbage when he was here, I'm sure in the off-season you can pick up an arm like his for under $2 mil or so. Molina was signed to a 1 year deal (at $5 mil?!?!), so I would think he's gone for sure (won't bother trying to resign him). The crazy thing was, I believe he was looking for a 4 year deal for $8 mil a year?!?!? Next year he probably won't even get $5 mil, but they should use that money on more pitching (obviously). Problem is, they're actually over what they can spend next year I believe without even considering Molina's contract--I don't know, I wish Ted Rogers went to more of the games, as if he was at yesterdays he might have given the big "YES" for JP to go and get Zito (imagine that starting 4 next year, Halladay, Zito, Burnett and Chacin, R, L, R, L--WOW), but of course they'd have to be assured that he'd stay for around $10 mil a year. Should be an interesting trade deadline though, Jay
Yesterday's loss was the most heartbreaking of the year. Two out in the ninth, three-run walkoff HR by Milton Bradley. I hope B.J. Ryan is not getting tired.
The one victory the Blue Jays had on Tuesday was that they had not traded one of their promising young pitchers for Mark Redman, Jon Lieber or Tony Armas Jr. Other than that, things are looking glum.
No offense but I am not as worried about you guys taking the division anymore, but more worried about you guys playing SPOILER! Just think of beating the Yanks..OK. I think if Burnett was healthy all year things might be a bit different. Its great to see Rios back, THX for the update Writer.

Well there are some good things about this Jays team that developed though. Alex Rios for one ( I bet your shocked I said that, huh? ) Vernon Wells seems to have reached the status of a top tier player which is great. Halladay and Burnett are a great 1-2 punch as well. I think this Jay's team will be competetive for awhile.
That was pretty dissapointing. I can see the Jays giving up some runs in Yankee Stadium but to score only 4 runs in three games against Wright, Wang and Lidle is awful.

Pretty frustrating, they seem to have loats of talent - not sure why they aren't able to be more successful.
I figured they would've done something more before the trade deadline. They were definetly within striking distance of the Division title, and if Clemens had gone anywhere it would've been great to see him go back to Toronto. That would've setup a damngood finish for the seaosn in the AL East. But alas, it didn't happen and they stupidly let go an ignorant selfish player.

no it wouldn't. I respect the Jays enough to know that if they play their cards right will be contenders every year. But I'm not gonna lose sleep over any East team that fades unless it is the Yankees
Im telling ya Writer, I would be exited about your Jays for next season,( barring a major catastrophic collapse of the Red Sox/Yankee's during the stretch run of'course ) Burnett and Halladay could be the best 1-2 punch in the AL next year. As Ive said before Vernon Wells is really shaping up to being a dominant hitter that could carry a team, throw in Rios (shocker I mentioned him huh?) and Troy Glaus and you got yourself a nice core of players.
Watch out for the Jays in '07!!!! You guys have had some tuff injuries this year, things really could have played out a bit better had the injury bug not hit.

Kind of like Rickey?
back on track, it just seems like the team deflated...I wonder how much the Shea debacle affected things, and if he was onto something when he wrote that?
Pretty frustrating, they seem to have loats of talent - not sure why they aren't able to be more successful.

I'm a diehard fan. So I'm not capable of sticking in fork in them. But I'll agree that things don't look good.
It would be nice to see a 3 team race in the east but they are fading fast.

no it wouldn't. I respect the Jays enough to know that if they play their cards right will be contenders every year. But I'm not gonna lose sleep over any East team that fades unless it is the Yankees

Watch out for the Jays in '07!!!! You guys have had some tuff injuries this year, things really could have played out a bit better had the injury bug not hit.
