Wow David, very cool coin! Wish I had a refence so I could figure out what the thing is, other than a very original looking Bechtler

    Thanks for sharing!image

it's a neat coin with a great history, but I personally wouldn't call it "beautiful"

I have to say, if I had the money and some more reference books, privateer gold is really, really attractive. It's one of my favorite parts of the Redbook!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Hopefully, I will "behold" that one in person on Friday. image

Rutherfordton NC Gold...phooey. But I can easily be impressed with some good old Gainesville GA Gold.image

David, I've never seen the single star design. What can you tell us about it?

I wouldn't mind having a bit of that antique North Caroliny gold. image

That particular $2 1/2 is the transitional type that was made between the early beaded border-style pieces and the later Bechtler Quarter Eagles that we are used to seeing at auction (the 67-Gr/21-Ct and 64-Gr/22-Ct issues that turn up from time to time). It is a really neat piece, and seen side by side with the other two types, it is an obvious "missing link." Another thing to note about Bechtlers is that the location listed on the coins has nothing to do with where they were struck or where the gold came from. Christian Bechtler used the Georgia and Carolina appellations to communicate the fineness of the gold in the coin: the Georgia pieces were 22-Ct, while 21 and 20-Ct gold was called "Carolina Gold."

Since you prefer GA gold, here are a couple of beauties:

As you pointed out, those may contain Georgia Gold, but were minted in Rutherfordton NC. A little better for me (they are gorgeous) than that NC gold, but what I was looking for was some T Reid minted gold from Gainesville GA.image

I only meant that their designs are more like gold bars than they are artistic renditions.

If one can bang the "design" out on a typewriter, it's hard to call it "pretty," again, just IMHO

    regulated,

i was looking at the pictures and a thought crossed my mind.
i imagine such a simple design could be counterfieted rather easily.
what are the chances that some of these big ticket items are really
    fakes made years ago?

has such a situation ever arose in that area of numis?

Impressive to say the least. Thanks for the pics. I love threads like this David that give me the chance to see and learn what I do not know about. Thanks again.image
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

People actually collect contemporary counterfeits of Bechtler Gold; the die work on some of these is outstanding, but most are in base metal. The few that exist in debased gold are pretty easy to recognize.

I have never seen any fantasy pieces that were really convincing fakes - most forgers use such modern equipment that the resulting coins don't look right.

This is the best forgery I have ever seen. The punches are very close to what Christian Bechtler used, but they are not a match. The coin is also struck in heavily debased gold, and was struck in a collar that gave it an edge that really looks nothing like the genuine article:

And to answer your other question, I'm giving up my Mechanic badge because Don made one for me that says Coin Weenie. Its much more appropriate.
