PCGS says "I have good news, and I have bad news."

The good news is my modern crossover order got done in 11 days!

The bad news is...
1 11148480 1969-S 50C USA DNC
2 11148481 1969-S 50C USA DNC
3 11148482 1969-S 5C USA DNC
4 11148483 1970-S 50C USA DNC
5 11148484 1970-S 5C USA DNC
6 11148485 1981-S 50C Type 2 USA DNC
7 11148486 1981-S 50C Type 2 USA DNC
8 11148487 1971-D $1 USA DNC
9 11148488 1971-D $1 USA DNC

Date Received: 03/17/2006
Date Shipped: 03/28/2006

I think they forgot to look at them!

I wonder why 2 years ago my yearly cost for submissions was over $25K, and last year it was only $2500. I realize I don't mean squat to PCGS's bottom line, but 5 for 60 on modern crossovers! I know my standards on coins haven't changed, but it sure looks like PCGS's have.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Last spring on 81-T2s I was running 80% on crossovers, now I have been running 20%. Maybe they just don't want to inflate the pops!

  • It's always a red flag when crossover submissions get done so quickly. Not too much work involved there to look at them and just put them back in the box. Why don't they refund the money it would take to put the coins in the PCGS holder, or, on general principle, even the 35 cents of plastic per holder?

I forget but who but there is a board member that has a theory. He thinks in the next couple of days, there will be more BB's and DNC's because they PCGS wants to process more coins before the end of the quarter. Maybe he was right?

Could it also be the NGC's standards have changed (presuming they were in NGC holders)?
  • TrinkettsTrinketts Posts: 1,699
The case very well could be NGC's standards... Take a look at the population reports for MS70 and PF70 coins from 2004,2005,2006... It is staggering.

I would be interested in knowing what the 71D IKEs were. Were they MS67s?
  • RampageRampage Posts: 9,485 ✭✭✭✭✭
Forgot to say, I have yet to see an NGC graded IKE that I thought was properly graded.
  • PreTurbPreTurb Posts: 1,193 ✭✭✭
Yes, they're desperately trying to keep modern (and probably all) pops down - to keep the submitting interest high in hope of that "big score". High pops equal lower value, less incentive to submit. It's a business.
  • BaleyBaley Posts: 22,663 ✭✭✭✭✭
Memo: got to find some way to hold the supply of moderns down. '

specially when folks like MadMarty and Russ keep "makining" new ones by searching original mint and proof sets.

    response; DNC them some more.

Is this a final official sign from PCGS that NGC graded moderns are officially overgraded and will not cross? The modern market is really starting to show their opinion on NGC graded coins.

Nah, they tolerate whining about the grading. We'd all be gone otherwise image

Yeah, try again Marty. I think it's all in who you draw that's doing the crossing that day.
  • TheNumishTheNumish Posts: 1,628 ✭✭
The problem is with PCGS. I've followed the submissions Marty has shared with us and he is an expert at grading 1981 Type 2's and silver proof Kennedy's. If he thought they were nice enough to take a shot then some of them should have crossed. We all know Marty doesn't want to waste his money.

OUCH!!! That one hurt! Have a beer and crack'em out.....send them in raw and let the chips fall
    where they may.

<< Forgot to say, I have yet to see an NGC graded IKE that I thought was properly graded.>>

    Well now,......Let's see....Submission#3460981 has (3) out of (8) Ikes
    and one is a 1972-P Type 2 in 65!image

    On the one before that (I can't remember the #)....the last (3) out of (8) Ikes....one was a 72-P Type 3 in MS66!

So, that is (6) out of 16 and ALL were Ikes and ALL were NGC crossovers.
I guess NGC must get them right some of the time!image
