You guys are awful tough on this coin -- the big pics make the hits look worse than they are, methinks. I'll guess 63, and a very pretty one at that. Nice coin, Mark....Mike

Another pic. This is what it looks like at an angle. this is why I like it so.

MS63, unless that is a rub by the lower right of the shield. Decent strike for the date, strong head and toe. Nice color too. Is that a clash to the right of the base under the U of UNITED or die polishing marks?

  • the shield is weakly struck (corresponds to upper left wreath). The coin just has the look of an au 58 imo

I don't really know anything about the series, but that coin puts me in the mind of a proof.

  • I change my answer to MS63 from that second pic.

It resides in a PCGS 64 slab. i agree 63/64. It may have gotten the 64 nod from the great PL obv and color on it. Nice color and luster rev. A little weak on the strike. Very few marks.

  • AU 58, it looks like there is a tiny amount wear on the shield and high points. It could just be a weak strike, which I would then go with MS63+.

I was looking at 63/64 when I saw your answer. People do need to remeber how tiny these are and those big gouges are just tiny nicks.

Sweet! I don't know H10c that much, but due to what Brian posted above, my guess was going to be MS64 (then I noticed Mark listed the grade anyway).

MS-63, unless it has nice luster, then it would be a MS-64

My grade of 62 had nothing to do with nicks and everything to do with dullness and lack of life in the first picture. Stick with the second shot. imageimage

I also think everyone is being very tough on this coin. Granted, I am no expert, but I think 64 is fair. Very nice coin , and worth 64 money IMO (of course I have been known to overpay for coins I really likeimage ). My 1870 also exhibits the weak strike on the reverse at 10:00. Is that normal for this date?

If the coin has life under the toning, it will make MS-64. If not, it will fall in the MS-62, 63 range.

Nice coin. MS62 Too bad it doesn't have an "S" mint mark inside the wreath. image

The coin looked Au-58 from the first pic, then once you posted the second I felt a solid 63.

My question is ?where's the s mintmark?

I actually don't like either picture of this coin. Although all of the details are there, the coin looks lifeless. That is very possibly the case if it is prooflike as you say. The details look 63 to me so the grade of 64 isn't a far stretch as long as the fields look good in hand.

The limiting factors regarding hits are on the obverse. The few between the head and hand, the one in the right field, and and a few in the left field. I'm not sure what's going on between the head and "S".

On the reverse, I am guessing the light rubs above HALF are light rubs and not circulation marks. I have a couple of half dimes that have those and they show up as huge marks in photos.

It is very much PL on the obv, slightly so on the rev. It shows virtually no luster obv and has great mirrors. It is a tough coin to deal with photographically and grading-wise.
