Loupe info. After comparisons, I do think Zeiss is the best.

OK, my loupe diappeared. And to make a long story short, I satisfied my curiosity, and bought a few. Some old Zeiss 6X and 8X, a brand new Zeiss 3x-6x=9x, an Eschenbach 3x-6x=9x, and a high falootin engravers loupe, custom made in japan (4-1/2X, 1-5/16 dia achromatic 3 lens system, not a triplet)
Judging all aspects of all three excellent loupes, magnification accuracy, distortion, color, the Zeiss handily won with distortion and color. The biggest edge was color. I looked at my wife's butterfly collection. In all cases, the Zeiss D36 retained more color, vibrancy, etc. I went on to learn that there manufacturing process does result in a lens which does allow more light through.
I do have to say that the eschenbach has much better ergonomics.
So that is my empirical conclusion, opinion.

I don't think any of this would make or break coin grading though

I just got a Zeiss after using B&L loupes, and I love it. Definitely better color and clarity, and I like the larger field of vision.

I have the Zeiss D36 and the Eschenbach. I like them both for coins.
But I like the ergonomics of the Eschenbach more, so that is the one I usually take to shows.

I generally agree, though I recommend reading Newmismatists excellent thread on loupes--if you can find it.

The better loupes are easier on your eye and there in lies the value, IMO.

    I have a Zeiss D40 and 2 ANCOS....10x and a 17x

no comparison when viewing coins. Use a Zeiss one time and you'll swear the anco's and all of the other cheapos are nothing more than fancy beer bottles to look thru.

So, where does one go for a Zeiss loupe? Is there a recommended dealer/website?

I love my Eschenbach 5x. I've never tried a nice Zeiss.

These loupes are sure expensive, $115 and up. There must be places to get a hefty discount over the web. Anyone have a source?

I used Zeiss for years until Joel (the guy who sells Zeiss loupes on the floor at Long Beach) showed me a new jeweler's loupe with better depth of focus than my Zeiss. Of course I can't remember the name right now. Anyhow, I liked it a lot better for attribution/authentication work... Its silver matte finish metal & is hexagonal. Anyone else see one of these?

I have never found either loupe heavily discounted.
Think of your loupe as a tool to practice your profession.

My loupes have saved me their cost many times over by allowing me to see defects that other loupes miss. For me, they have easily been worth the price.

I just bought the Zeiss 3-6-9. The fields are bigger and when you combine the 3/6 the field on the 9x is at least twice that of a B&L 10x. There is a difference. You aren'y going to buy one for less than $100.

I have owned and used several different brands.... over many years. The Zeiss lens are the best I have found. I have the D36 (3-6-9) and use it exclusively. Cheers, RickO

What a bunch of coin snobs.image

For those not in the loop (excuse the pun) awhile back I was accused of being a coin snob because I recommended the Zeiss D36. Without a doubt it is the finest loupe I've ever used.image

Right now, I'm selling Eschenbach and Bausch & Lomb magnifiers - and soon, H.E. Harris & Co. and a yet-to-be-disclosed brand. I wish I can sell Zeiss, but my supplier doesn't carry them.image
