Loupe info. After comparisons, I do think Zeiss is the best.

OK, my loupe diappeared. And to make a long story short, I satisfied my curiosity, and bought a few. Some old Zeiss 6X and 8X, a brand new Zeiss 3x-6x=9x, an Eschenbach 3x-6x=9x, and a high falootin engravers loupe, custom made in japan (4-1/2X, 1-5/16 dia achromatic 3 lens system, not a triplet)
Judging all aspects of all three excellent loupes, magnification accuracy, distortion, color, the Zeiss handily won with distortion and color. The biggest edge was color. I looked at my wife's butterfly collection. In all cases, the Zeiss D36 retained more color, vibrancy, etc. I went on to learn that there manufacturing process does result in a lens which does allow more light through.
I do have to say that the eschenbach has much better ergonomics.
So that is my empirical conclusion, opinion.
I don't think any of this would make or break coin grading though

But I like the ergonomics of the Eschenbach more, so that is the one I usually take to shows.

I generally agree, though I recommend reading Newmismatists excellent thread on loupes--if you can find it.
The better loupes are easier on your eye and there in lies the value, IMO.
no comparison when viewing coins. Use a Zeiss one time and you'll swear the anco's and all of the other cheapos are nothing more than fancy beer bottles to look thru.

unless you are doing something more super duper specialized

Think of your loupe as a tool to practice your profession.
My loupes have saved me their cost many times over by allowing me to see defects that other loupes miss. For me, they have easily been worth the price.

But I like the 5x Eschenbach best.
Still excellent quality for the mony. I bougt the 2 extra 6x and 8x for my bride.
For those not in the loop (excuse the pun) awhile back I was accused of being a coin snob because I recommended the Zeiss D36. Without a doubt it is the finest loupe I've ever used.

I know about Zeiss very well, since my brother does photography (including foresnic) using Zeiss lens.
