Picked this 1884-O common date up for a strong price of $38.00.

NGC MS-62. The one with the hot pressed logo on the plastic. The earlier one had the logo INSIDE the plastic. But of course, there was an all black and all white NGC holder PRIOR TO THESE HOLDERS as well.

  • Niceimage There are two types of those slabs. One with the gold lettering inside the slab on the gasket and the later type (yours) with it on the outside of the slab.

Is that what people call a "no line fatty"?
  • orevilleoreville Posts: 12,075 ✭✭✭✭✭
I always thought the no line fatty referred to the NGC slab that has no bar coding on the front. This is so far correct. However, the reverse side in which the fatty holder are referred to generally meant the holder with the wide NGC hologram that nearly covers the entire width of the slab.

Now, these older holders are also "fatty holders" in that they are the old thicker holders but I have never seen these called fatty holders since they were made prior to the usage of the hologram.

What does the front of the one you have pictured look like?

All these old TPG slabs have been through so many hands now that I seldom see one that will upgrade. Three years ago I was finding upgradeable old PCGS and NGC slabs on a regular basis.

Older PCGS and NGC slabs (no hologram) types are still not very difficult to find. They are out there. I come across them daily.

I need sterilized gloves to handle most coins I see in original PCGS slabs so that I don't get bitten by the coin, they are often that ugly.

You should pick up some of the NGC ones with the gold seal on the inside of the slab on the gasket wayeee. Should be easy since you see them daily.

Are they worth a premium over the coin and given grade?

Hi I have a old ngc holder with a ms 65 morgan 1886 with great tone, do you think I should have it regraded and get a possible higher grade? or are they tougher now then back years ago with the old slab? hope you can help.

Yes. I'd say $10-20 or more over a cheap $30-60 coin.

If that's true for you then you should probably quit the grading thing and work for me on the coin show tour! Lots of money to be made if you've found that to be trueimage

Is that the coin from the other night on Teletrade?

If so, I'm dying to know why it sold for nearly $900 including juice. Is it a scarce variety, or something?

    Please educate me image

Really? How often do you get the first generation (black insert) NGC slabs?

And I would have to agree with Cameron skepticism about you running across the early NGC slabs with the logo applied to the inner insert. I'd probably be willing to match his offer for them. ($10-20 or more over a cheap $30-60 coin.) They are not as common as you think they are. NGC 3 and NGC 3.1 slabs are available, but not NGC 1, 2, and 2.1

<< <i>I always thought the no line fatty referred to the NGC slab that has no bar coding on the front. This is so far correct. >>

No line fatty could apply to any of the first 7 generations of NGC holders. The line did not appear until NGC 6, (eighth generation because there are two two intermediate varieties that were added after the initial numbering was done) but the barcode first showed up on NGC 5. The full width hologram was dropped starting with NGC 7 in either late 1995 or early 1996. The full width hologram began with NGC 4 in late 1989.

Ok Seateddime, lets see your first generation NGC slabs!
