I followed this thread over the weekend. Laughable. Poster posts positive comments about GAI, stirs it up a bit with some inflammatory comments, and it is on from there:
"GAI sucks, they only grade trimmed cards, PSA is God, BVG? Are you kidding? The only thing they ever do there is grade trimmed cards. GAI is ok. No, it's not. GAI cards don't sell at all. BVG cards sell for more (I laughed out loud at that)". And on and on it goes.
This appears to happen about once a month on this board. It gives me tiredhead, but it also has led me to conclude the following:
1) GAI is a credible alternative. Like it or not, they are, otherwise they would not be stirring up this kind of debate and would largely be ignored like PRO.
2) PSA is the clear leader, and will be for the foreseeable future. The market, and the following, show this to be true.
3) It's about the card, not the holder. Not every non-PSA card is trimmed, altered, etc. If I can find value in a non-PSA holder - except for PRO, which I'd never buy - I'll do it. If y'all don't, that's great, just one less person for me to deal with.
4) The discussion about "dealer friendliness" is laughable. Those of you lodging those allegations against GAI apparently have never heard of the famous - or infamous - Vegas trips organized by PSA. "Dealer friendliness" exists everywhere. Get over it.
5) BVG - like Beckett itself - is becoming more and more a bystander on the grading scene, perhaps due more to the directionless actions of their company than their grading standards.
6) When I have a raw card I want holdered, I think of PSA first, but................
7) Credible grading alternatives like SGC or GAI are good for the hobby, and the collector. Someone has to keep PSA honest. It's odd that people have this almost violent reaction to them when someone comes on here - albeit in an inflammatory manner - and says they (the other grading companies) have something worthwhile to offer.

Steve - all I did was make an observation and then all this bashing BS started. Aren't you tired of it? If we all want to uphold some kind of higher standard, let's get rid of the BS (PSA is so much better than this ABC company..... BGS, GAI, SGC is so much better in this or that way etc...) . How about just keepin' things real for once. I think Ron said it best , most definitely.

Give me a break, will you? OK , a GAI 8 Mantle is worth $54.00 right? All right so I just saw a PSA 8 1959 Mantle sell for about $2800.00 at a Mile High auction and GAI sells typically about 20 -30 % less so it looks to me that he priced it right. I will check back with him the next show and let you know. And also if all of these GAI cards were not selling, do you think that dealers would have put up with that for long???? Give me another break and go read Ron's response to all this....he seems to be about the only one who has it right.
What gas? I made an observation and was questioning it in the beginning and then had to defend it from all of the BS. Keep it real everyone and no more BS. Look at Ron's response, it's by far the best one I've read and the most sensible. What do you think?
I have followed this thread periodically over the weekend. I couldn't bring myself to reply before now, but I had to applaud RonBurgundy's response. I think it's terrific.
chaz-if what RonB said in his last post is what you were trying to convey all along, you did a very poor job of it. Perhaps letting go of this thread altogether would be the best course of action here.
I have no vested interest in any of the comments on here and to be perfectly honest, everyone can use whatever grading company they want. That being said, you have to understand that you came on a PSA board and you certainly did "pour gas" as winpitcher eluded to earlier. That is going to elicit some very strong responses from some people, I would venture to say the same thing would happen on the SGC board if you posted this with PSA in the title.
Rarely do you see an e-bay auction that says: "NM-MT card that could grade GAI 9".
Rarely do you see an e-bay auction that says: "GAI 9 Joe Blow RC (or whoever) RC" when there is no grade applied at all but GAI used to sell card and garner attention from buyers searching.

Rarely do you see an e-bay auction that says: "Case Fresh Don Mattingly RC, GAI 9 possible?"
Rarely do you see an e-bay auction that says: "PSA 10 card, could this possibly be a GAI 9 if cracked?"
Has anyone ever done a search on e-bay for the following: "1969 GAI topps"; "1971 GAI topps"; "1980 GAI topps"; "1952 GAI bowman"?
Has anyone ever seen an auction for a vintage RC like 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle and GAI cert # has been doctored? Has anyone ever seen ANY GAI auction where anything has been doctored to make it look authentic?
Who has ever cracked a psa 9 or higher card and crossed it over to GAI grading?
Has anyone ever seen an auction where someone buys a psa 10 card for $400 and crosses it over to GAI 9 and sells it for $1,000?

Hey Julen- read what Ron said, he has said far better than you or anyone else. Enough with the PSA God BS. Let's get real and stay real.
<<< Not every non-PSA card is trimmed, altered, etc. >>>
Maybe it wasn't intended this way but then again considering the "quality" of the post...I think this was an intentional backhanded compliment against PSA.
GAI card grading is not as good as PSA and the realized marketplace prices of their slabbed cards basically confirms this. And my opinion based on other threads and statements made by a person associated with GAI themselves, is that GAI pack grading borders on fraud. I shiver to think what is really inside those "unopened" wax packs slabbed by GAI - I have a strong feeling that most of it isn't pretty. But deep down I don't care because I don't own any GAI slabbed cards and I never will.

Actually Pro is a much better company than GAI. Pro Graded cards have been fetching more money in the marketplace than have GAI graded cards in similar grades.

I didn't think I would respond after posting what I did, but then I saw this:
"not every non-PSA card is trimmed, altered, etc." ............"Maybe it wasn't intended this way but then again considering the "quality" of the post...I think this was an intentional backhanded compliment against PSA."
Ugh. No, it wasn't.
Look, I would trust the authenticity and the grade of a card in a PSA holder more than any other grading company. But to suggest as some do that all some companies do is grade trimmed or altered material is silly. The posts go something like this:
"A 1957 BVG 9 Mantle? Oh, that's obviously trimmed."
Jeesh. That's what I was getting at.........the intellectual laziness of posts like these.
As far as pack grading is concerned, I can't speak to that. Don't collect 'em. I shudder to think what's in any of those packs, as I'm not sure anyone can verify or not whether they've truly remained unopened.

it's obvious your intentions were simply to rile up the PSA board members...why else come here with such an inflammatory post?
You're basing your entire argument on what YOU happened to see at ONE show...you didn't show any facts (such as comparable ebay auction closings in any number, etc. etc) you used your (obviously) subjective opinion on what YOU say you saw.
What's worse is you knew what you were doing with your posts, everyone here called you on it, then you tried to play the 'hey I'm an innocent messenger here! don't hurt me!' which is just pathetic.
Either man up and say you work for GAI, or that you have a vested interest in their cards...don't play this baloney you're trying to work here. And yes, it's Grade A...Baloney.
Q]Either man up and say you work for GAI, or that you have a vested interest in their cards...don't play this baloney you're trying to work here. And yes, it's Grade A...Baloney. >>
What makes you such an expert? NO, I don't work for GAI and I really don't have any of their cards. I do have a substantial PSA collection that I have invested alot of money in and I am concerned that as time goes by, GAI will become a real threat to PSA in the vintage marketplace and could potentially equal or overtake PSA which will stagnate PSA vintage pricing. What is so wrong with that observation? I am not saying today or tomorrow or next year but at some point it could happen. Again, you are someone who can't see the forest for the trees.....
Looking to get psa registry members on a psa massage board to agree with your statement is like me walking into a lions den with raw meat tied to my leg and expecting to walk out with the meat and my leg.

Look genius, is the price differential a blowout ??? NO. And that's what I am worried about. As time goes by genius, they may make more gains and then what???????? So that means I missed the boat on GAI and should have "switched" over ?????
I'll give our friend one more bump on this stupid thread one more time.
For those of you who don't get it yet, chaz43 is just little idiot who came here stirring up trouble. My guess is he's a 16 year old kid who trolls message boards looking for fun while everyone else in his school is out doing high school stuff. I doubt he knows anything about cards or cares about card collecting or grading. It's actually kind of sad, and those of you leading him on and replying should be ashamed for encouraging his actions. He needs to learn to make friends in real life.
He's no doubt going to copy and paste my post here, and make some stupid post baiting me or someone else to reply. But just give it a rest, everyone. Even you guys that want to reply and say "I agree with you DG!", just don't. It's an unnecessary bump. Let him go away.
Just let it die.
In other words, whomever authors the post below this one is a complete f***ing moron.
Let's face it! GAI didn't get my respect (...and not much respect from others on this: see below!)
Here is a recent GAI/PSA "crack-out" example, brought to light "on the PSA threads" last week:
A GAI graded 9.5 of 1976 OPC Hank Aaron went for $317,
It was revealed that the card was recently "cracked from the GAI slab" and sent to PSA, ...and came back as the "one and only" PSA 10 of this rare card! Wow!
I know, I know! (...As I won the PSA 10 for $1225!)
GAI didn't get much respect, with only a $317 winning bid!, vs. a $1225 winning bid in a PSA 10 holder (...with $1200 & $1126, as 2nd & 3rd highest bids). This tells me that GAI has a long way to go in earning the hobby's respect! It seemed GAI sure had the Aaron graded right! LOL!
that means I missed the boat on GAI and should have "switched" over ?????
Chaz I think it is time you abandon ship. If I was you i would cross my entire 3 card collection over to GAI. You have made such intelligent observations here that I am considering selling my collection off. I figure I better do it now b4 GAI overtakes PSA and I lose my shirt. Forget the fact that I am a COLLECTOR and have collected with disposable income for fun.
SD
Edited to add: DG if you do not want to post that is your business. Please do not be a message board cop. It makes YOU look like the moron.
For those of you who don't get it yet, chaz43 is just little idiot who came here stirring up trouble.
I've been a PSA customer for close to 10 years. I used to frequent this board regularly in my support for GAI. I was wrong for for starting such controversial threads then, and I think it is wrong now. I've learned a lot since then on what to say and what not to say on a message board.
Buy the card not the holder, don't buy the card, buy the holder, whatever...it's up to you. Doesn't it really make a difference in how one collects. It's your money, spend it the way you want.
PSA offers several advantages, especially in pursuing a registry set...ease of collecting graded cards, a friendly registry, consistent grading, good customer service etc, can really save me money in pursuing a set of close to 800 cards.
It's a PSA message board, so imo it is best to leave out threads in support of their competitors...you'll only open up a can of worms here. There are plenty of other forums to discuss the pro's of other grading companies.
With that said, competition is always good for us collectors...competitive prices, better service, and a continual willingness on the part of all grading companies to seek continuous improvement on what they offer to us.
GAI is more po-opular with dealers for one reason. tehre are dealer friendly. But does that even make up for the price diffrence? Go from a PSa 8 to GAI 8.5 and unless someone is dumb enough to think it will cross to a 9, it will make a nice coaster for you beer!

Well then don't forget:

Chaz what was the worry?
From the tone of the replies and the title it seems that you were not worrying about anything.
Please clarify

Cat got your tongue Grasshopper??? Think and come up with some reasons.......
it's obvious your intentions were simply to rile up the PSA board members...why else come here with such an inflammatory post?

Are you another Beagle fan?? Did you read the entire thread? I did not ask anyone to agree with my statement. It was an observation that's all. There were some real good points made (Ron) that make alot of sense (true reality and reason) and then you have the "goon squad" who are so paranoid and defensive that if anyone trys to make a personal observation, they get all this BS.

Look genius, is the price differential a blowout ??? NO. And that's what I am worried about. As time goes by genius, they may make more gains and then what???????? So that means I missed the boat on GAI and should have "switched" over ?????
The post count went above 100 and everyone can expect the "customary" CU Award of a complimentary set of steak knives!

HERE IS THE CARD IN A GAI HOLDER: 1976 O-Pee-Chee-#550 Hank Aaron GAI 9.5 GAI CARD SOLD FOR: $317.00 ON 10/18/2005
HERE IS THE CARD IN A PSA HOLDER: 1976 76 O-Pee-Chee #550 Hank Aaron PSA 10 PSA CARD SOLD FOR: $1,225.00 ON 12/6/2005 (I KNOW THIS, 'CAUSE I WON IT!)
LOL!

Edited to add: DG if you do not want to post that is your business. Please do not be a message board cop. It makes YOU look like the moron.
