Was that the one on Ebay where there was already significant curling on many of the packs?

    In any case, good luck

I bought the case from an ebay store, but I don't think it is the one to which you referred. It is fully sealed and you can't see any of the packs.

<< <i>Yeah, I have the Morris in an 8 already. I used the BK cards to fill out the order to 100 cards and I had to choose which ones to submit so I went with the Tigers set for now. I usually submit stuff for resale and then I throw in a few for my collection. I REALLY wish I would have gotten a 9 on one of the 77 Reggie's. That means I have to buy a 9 off ebay or go with the 30 sets thing again through BBCExchange. I might try resubmitting one of them, they are nice Reggie's. >>

    Steve,
I see you have a Reggie 8 up on ebay. It looks like it has print marks below the name. I noticed most of mine from BBCEx had similar marks. I'm surprised you didn't get a PD qualifier. Good luck if you resubmit your best one. I have a PSA 8 Reggie I think can bump to a 9 if I resubmit. Here it is.

Yeah, some of my other ones had that too. I don't know if you remember but 4SC was selling some PSA 9's of this card about a year ago. All the ones I saw from them had this mark. I remember thinking at the time as to how it could get a straight 9 with that mark. They probably got the same lots we did from BBCExchange but they got a friendly grader. I looked at my 3 PSA 8's again and I don't think I am going to resubmit one. They are very solid 8's (corner wise) but would probably be a low end 9. I don't want to invest more money in the same card as a PSA 8 again. If I knew I had a solid 9, I would probably resubmit.

Grades popped on a few more '77s

    25 31638292 1977 BURGER KING 1 BILLY MARTIN YANKEES 8
    26 31638293 1977 BURGER KING 2 THURMAN MUNSON YANKEES 8
    27 31638294 1977 BURGER KING 10 SPARKY LYLE YANKEES 9

The Lyle will be an upgrade to the PSA 8 in my set. Only 6 more 8s to upgrade to 9s. Can't figure out why the Billy Martin is so tough.

Yeah, I was pretty jazzed to see that I won it. I bid $125 but I thought it would go higher than that. I figured in the $200 range. I've realized that I like going after the PSA 10's because it is a card that your competition cannot pass you on. Of the 31 total PSA 10's from all the Burger King sets, I own 5 of them. Here's a link for anyone who didn't see it.

The Thurman was a sweet card. If I didnt have bills up the wazoo this month I would have bid higher than the $90 I stopped at. You got a great deal for your winning bid.

I just got $52 for one of the three '79 Carlton 9's I got back. I thought that was about right, but the potential was there for it to go for more. I'm selling the last one for $50 dlvd if anybody's interested.

Also, I have a few '79 Schmidt 8's that I think could get a 9 on a good day. Anybody have an idea what they would go for? I'm trying to decide if they're worth re-subbing until I get my grade.

ms, did you get the 9 you were looking for on the Doug Byrd I sold you?

Lee - it is at PSA as we speak, but it may be awhile until the grade pops. Quite frankly, an 8 would be an upgrade for me - that was the first really nicely centered one I saw where the corners weren't mangled.

Happy to help out. I think the fact that Doug Byrd is so ugly makes it hard to get a high grade regardless of the card's condition. Any idea what a PSA 9 Schmidt would bring?

Lee - off the top of my head, no. I think there are quite a few of them; I have not checked the Pop Report lately, but I would guesstimate in the $15-$20 range. But I just haven't been looking at them much in a long time.

That said, I would be in for a nice bounty were a 10 to ever pop up.

Many of you Tigers guys probably noticed this auction that I won for the 1978 Burger King Tigers box. I'm really surprised that it didn't go higher considering the competition on this set. I recently sold my set because the prices of 9's were getting out of control. I plan on grading the cards in this box and maybe I'll make another run at the top spot or I'll sell some on ebay, I haven't decided yet. I'm crossing my fingers for the first Morris PSA 9 but we'll see.
  • jersterjerster Posts: 828 ✭✭✭
    Steve-
you got a good price. I bid on it the first time around, then it got relisted. The seller lost a few bucks when the original buyer backed out.

Good luck with the packs...I gotta believe some good ones will be had.
  • WabittwaxWabittwax Posts: 1,984 ✭✭✭
I just had to share this card that I bought on ebay. It looks like an insignificant card but it is the first and only PSA 10 ever given on any card in this set. So far, 326 cards have been graded with 172 PSA 8's, 111 PSA 9's, and 1 PSA 10. I actually bid way more than what I won it for. It became one of those "must have" cards when I saw it. So this should give hope to the Tigers and Philles guys about a 10 ever being graded. Here's a current breakdown of 10's on the BK sets:

    1977 Yankees - 25 PSA 10's of 281 Graded (I own 2 PSA 10's)
    1978 Yankees - 1 PSA 10 of 91 Graded
    1978 Tigers - 0 PSA 10's of 320 Graded!!!
    1979 Yankees - 11 PSA 10's of 339 Graded (I own 3 PSA 10's)
    1979 Phillies - 0 PSA 10's of 173 Graded
    1980 Phillies - 2 PSA 10's of 149 Graded
    1980 Pitch, Hit & Run - 1 PSA 10 of 326 Graded (I own 1 PSA 10)

I just submitted all of my 1977 Yankees, 1978 Tigers (from a wax box), 1979 Yankees, 1980 Phillies, and 1980 Pitch, Hit, & Run. Except for the Tigers, I should get very close to #1 on those other 4 sets once they come back.

A little bit brutal. The 1977 came from a super nice lot from BBCExchange. Funny thing about those is I picked the best of the best from 30 sets, then sold the rest to Michael Clum (the current #1 set). He was able to make it to #1 with my extras and I wound up but a bunch of 8's. I'm happy with those grades, I just think I could have caught a little looser grader. The 78 Tigers came from an unopened box. Those were the grades I was expecting from those but at $200 a box, I doubt I'll be buying another one. The 1980 Phillies I was very happy with. Can't go wrong with a lot of 9's on those. They honestly looked the same quality as the rest of the order. They came from packs also. Maybe he threw me a bone at the end after the beating, lol. I have a bigger order still coming. One nice thing, this was received 11/27 and done 11/30. Gator, I'll probably be need that 79 Yankees PSA 9 if you still have it. I'm gonna throw that PSA 7 they gave me out a 12 story building. I opened about 10 boxes to achieve that marvelous PSA 7, lol.

Jerster, congrats on this card. The competition on this set just absolutley amazes me. You guys are nuts, lol (I mean that in a good way). I may jump into this set someday, but I had to bow out to you guys because I knew I could never bring myself to pay this much. Any other BK set, the Checklist card would be like $15.
  • WabittwaxWabittwax Posts: 1,984 ✭✭✭
By the way, WOW!. This card FINALLY got graded. My prediction is this card should set a new record for this set. The highest card I've seen for this set was a Trammell PSA 9 that went for around $250 a while back but I think this card will beat that. Right now, this card is the Holy Grail of the set. It should smoke the checklist card by a mile.
  • Steve,

The Tigers checklist card has got to be one of the toughest cards to get in 9 imo. All of them end up with dinged corners because of the tight packaging. They are always packaged at the back of the pack. His ad said he went thru 600 of them looking for a 9, I half believe it. Probably a gazillion print compared to the other cards, yet it is still tough to find nice examples.

I didn't want to go that high, but I am a dumbass. What else can I say?

Not sure why there is only one Morris PSA 9, I don't think it's that tough to find in 8, just a matter of time before some more get to share the limelight with that one. For example, there's 3 Whitaker's now.

Now the holy freakin grail would be a Trammell in PSA 10. Between the player collectors and the Burger King collectors, that would fetch $500 rather easily.

  • WabittwaxWabittwax Posts: 1,984 ✭✭✭
I agree, the checklist cards are super tough. They are in the other BK sets too. I think unless there is a vending find of these, it may be a very long time before a 10 pops in the BK Tigers. Of course, I thought that about a Morris 9 also.
  • Hi there,

Can you tell how much I would expect to pay for a 1978 Topps Jack Morris Burger King PSA 8? Also Whittaker?

    Thanks.
  • WabittwaxWabittwax Posts: 1,984 ✭✭✭
$10-$15 each is about an average price for those.

  • << <i>$10-$15 each is about an average price for those. >>

Thanks Wabbitwax. That seems cheap for Morris, especially if he ends up in Cooperstown one of these days.

Well, somebody got it. It's not like the seller is holding on to it until it becomes a Pop 2. I wish it would have finished out, I would have loved to see the closing price. We may never know now because I'm sure the next one we see for sale will be the Pop 2 Morris.
  • I was all set to bid on that Morris 9, too. I think I have an idea as to who won it. I sold a Trammell 9 to a BK fan months ago. He has never listed his cards, but he has quite a few BK Tiger 9's now... especially if he got the Whitaker and Morris. I've seen him on ebay and he's always willing to bid high on Tigers cards. It wouldn't surprise me if the Morris went between $300 and $400. The collector I spoke of spent in that range for the Tram and there were around 5 at that time.

As far as that checklist goes, I passed on it with the plan of saving the $$$ for Morris. I suppose it's a tough card, but the ones I have as 8's look pretty darn 9-ish to me. Sometimes you just hope to get a grader on a good day.

At least with everybody battling it out, and cards going to collectors here and there, I may last at #1 for a few more months.

I got a couple 9's on BK Tigers (including the Tram!) which is cool because it will help me recover some of the cost for the unopened box. One of the cards that blew my mind was the 1980 BK Jim Palmer PSA 10. Before this card, there was only 1 PSA 10 ever from this set out of 348 cards (it's a Vida Blue PSA 10 that I own) so this is the only other PSA 10 which I now own too. I'm going to make sure NOBODY will catch me on this set. I want #1 with no chance of anyone catching up. Plus a 10 on a 1980 BK Phillies. Cool thing is that card came from cello box, which is amazing considering the tight cello wrap on those.

On those 1986 Topps I was pretty happy too. The Puckett PSA 10 is the 9th one and the Rick Aguilera is the first PSA 10. Cosidering the way those 1986 Topps Mets collector's go after these, it should start a nice battle on ebay.

Nice job on the Tigers - especially the Tram and cgecklist. Are you going to save them or sell them?
Collecting all graded Alan Trammell graded cards as well as graded 1984 Topps, Donruss, and Fleer Detroit Tigers

Yeah, I'm gonna sell just about everything except for the 1980 Pitch Hit and Run. Unfortunately those Checklist 9's are from Yankees sets. I did find 3 Tigers Checklists that are really nice from that box that are going in on my next submission.

    Steve-
If you have a 1977 BK Reggie Jackson in PSA 9 to sell, let me know. I can't seem to get a PSA 9 on a Jackson.

    Here is my latest sub:

LINE # CERT # CARD CARD CO. CARD # CARD NAME VARIETY GRADE
    1 06609813 1977 BURGER KING 1 YANKEES TEAM YANKEES-BILLY MARTIN 9
    2 06609814 1977 BURGER KING 14 BUCKY DENT YANKEES 8
    3 06609815 1977 BURGER KING 12 CHRIS CHAMBLISS YANKEES 9
    3 06609816 1977 BURGER KING 12 CHRIS CHAMBLISS YANKEES 9
    4 06609817 1977 BURGER KING 17 REGGIE JACKSON YANKEES 8
    4 06609818 1977 BURGER KING 17 REGGIE JACKSON YANKEES 7
    5 06609819 1977 BURGER KING 23 LOU PINIELLA YANKEES 9

The Yankees Team, Chambliss, and Piniella cards are upgrades for me. I'm very happy.

Wow, this card hit ebay, I figured it was worth bringing this thread back to the top. I don't know if it's worth quite that much but what a card. This card blows the regular 1980 Topps right out of the water. It's litterally the equivelent of comparing a 2007 Lamborgini to a 1978 Ford Pinto. I've submitting many of this card, all pack fresh condition, and have never even gotten a 9 yet. You can find full unopened cases of 1980 BK Phillies out there along with 50-100 card lots of just this Rose card, and Rose 10's still don't get graded. He should do very well selling this card, it just matters how much. If I had millionaire money to piss away, I'd jump all over it.
