I'll have #1 at all of them eventually, that's what I tell myself anyways.
  • I just got the email of my grades from PSA. I submitted a mess of Burger King Tigers and came away with mostly 8's, an occasional 7, one 6, and one 9. Fortunately, the 9 was a Trammell. I am assuming it's this one ('cuz it's centered like a ferocious beast)...

Freehomepage won't let me post my Trammell. So I'll have to shrink it down and post it as a clickable image...

  • WabittwaxWabittwax Posts: 1,984 ✭✭✭
Wow, that Tram is incredible. Good job.
  • I also emailed the PSA Set Registry folks and requested that they weight the BK Tigers. Currently, everything is a '1'... which is absurd, since the Trammell, Whitaker and Morris cards are all rookies and sought after by collectors. I suggested that Tram be weighted a '5' and Whitaker and Morris both 3's.

    What do you guys think?

    Toad -
Let me know if you are planning on selling any of the Tigers. Including the nice Tram you've got there...

Wow, let the bidding begin. I don't think I've ever seen this card for sale on Ebay. Considering a Jack Morris PSA 8 goes for around $30, what will this go for? It says it's a Pop 4 and it is by far the most sought after of all the BK cards. I only mention it because I have no intention of participating in the frenzy that will probably follow. Sorry if I ruined it for anybody else but the die-hard guys will find it anyways.

By the way, that weighting for the Tigers set sounds good to me. I hate it when sets aren't weighted. I noticed that a new guy took over the top spot. I need to submit my set to see where I rank.

Well, the Trammell closed at $261. That is a good amount but way way more than I would have bid. I believe it's worth every cent of $261, I'm just a cheepskate and I won't stop until I get one on a $5 submission. There is also currently a PSA 8 that just hit ebay, I wonder what that will go for? I'd guess about $50-$75 if $30 is correct for a Morris PSA 8.

  • I have a few Trammell 8's that I'll probably list at some point.

jimtb, how could you possibly part with your delicious Trammell 9? It's a very special rarity!

I got another nice-looking Trammell in an ebay set last week (along with an off-centered Lou and Jack). It's somewhere between 8 and 9 quality (great centering)... if I got a 9 on that one, I'd trade it for a Whitaker/Morris 9 combo. Unfortunately, there are no Morris 9's yet!

Wow, good results. Did you list your set yet? It should get you close to #1 since you have the Piniella.
  • tkd7tkd7 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭
    Steve-
I was very pleased with the results. I know how hard it is to get 9s on BK cards. The 10s were a complete surprise.
I think both the Tidrow and Gullett 10s and 9s are each 1/1. The Jim Wynn 9 is also 1/1.

Haven't updated my set yet. I am listed in the registry as Tom D.
If you want to help me upgrade my 8s to 9s in my set, I will be happy to trade my duplicate 9s if you have any that I don't.

Have you made your submission yet?
    Tom

Hello, no not yet, I'm waiting for a $5 special. I have a complete set to submit plus some extras so I'll definately trade you if we have ones each other needs. This is going to be a good race for #1. Did your cards come from BBCExchange? Where did you get them?
  • tkd7tkd7 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭
Yes, my cards came from BBCExchange. I'm tempted to go back and look at my remaining cards to see what might grade well.

I have had the Piniella since '77 when the set was issued. Yes, should be a good race to #1.
  • WabittwaxWabittwax Posts: 1,984 ✭✭✭
Tom, you are the man! You not only took over #1 on that set but you crushed the other monster set in Rating. I thought it would be close but that Pinella must be huge. If the $5 special is May 1st, my cards will go off that day. I'm hoping.
  • tkd7tkd7 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭
Thanks Steve....I'm hoping I can hold on to #1 until the Set Registry Awards come out. Its the only set I'll ever have a shot at #1. Its amazing how much the value of the Piniella adds to the overall GPA. I know there are some 9s out there on that card, but not many.

I'm hoping we can help each other out with some trades once you get yours graded. Good luck in your quest to be the King of Burger King.

Good to see the Burger King thread back up on the forum as well. Its been a while.

I hope my Munson that is at PSA right now pops before this auction ends.
  • WabittwaxWabittwax Posts: 1,984 ✭✭✭
I saw that Munson this morning too. I would love to have that but I know the price is going to be way higher than what I'm wanting to pay. I'm trying to complete all the BK sets at once so I'm finding no shortage of stuff to spend money on. I paid $9.99 for my PSA 9 so I'm happy with that for now. I think when I get to the point of having all the sets done and rarely finding new stuff, I'll start chasing down huge cards like that.

When I saw that Munson, I had to click and see if it was legit. I checked the Pop Report and to my surprise it is a Pop4! With the tons of nice sets that BBCExchange has sold lately, I think that 77's will prove to not be that tough. From what I've seen so far, the toughest sets will be the 78 Astros and 78 Rangers followed by the 78 Tigers and the 80 PHR. Speaking of 80 PHR, I've noticed some of the Runners at the end of the set are super tough. I've bought about 20 sets and opened about a couple boxes worth of packs and there is still cards that I haven't ben able to find in PSA 8 condition.

I just sent off the rest of my Tigers cards which will complete that set for me and some more 80 PHR cards. A guy named Michael Clum is making a run at all the sets like I am and he dethroned me recently. Congrats to him but I'm coming back with a vengence. I have a few of the Pop 1 PSA 9's from that set and I'm not budging with them. Here's a link to that. Pitch, Hit and Run holds a special meaning to me because when I was a kid, I participated on that event one summer against a couple hundred other kids. I took first place in hitting and pitching and won a big overall trophy. I plan on never resting until I retake 1st place on that set.

I'm also planning on sending in my 77's next week to complete that set. I also have the 79 and 80 Phillies set ready to go and they are complete also. I have some really nice 78 and 79 Yankees ready to go also but I have to pick my fights one at a time.

I was flipping through an old beckett recently and I saw a listing for 1982 Burger King Cleveland Indians. Has anybody ever heard of that set or seen it? I've never seen any on EBay.

Keep your '77s at bay for a few weeks so I can claim the Set Registry Award for this year. After this year, someone will likely pass me.

I didn't even realize the deadline was coming. I've never won an award for the registry. My goal next year is to take first on everything Burger King. I doubt I'll make it but I like to set my goals high.

I was in a cardshop in Philly a while back and I cherrypicked his 79 Phillies sets. I have the following that I'm getting ready to send off to PSA, and I think the chances of getting some 9s are pretty good. I won't say anything about 10s so I don't jinx myself..... Crap, I think I just jinxed myself.

Anyway, I'm sending off 4 Schmidt, 5 Carlton, a Rose, and a Luzinski, plus a Reggie from the 79 Yankees. I also have about 5 raw sets worth of cards which should yield a bunch of 8s and 9s (for commons) if you choose to send them off.

    PM me if interested.

    Lee:

Those are some really nice examples, of Carlton in particular. I was never able to pull more than an 8 on any of the boxes I opened - but it seems like you scored some phenomenal examples. Good luck and cheers!

p.s. I am interested in commons from the set, too, if you purchased any of the Phillies 'lesser knowns' that you were not planning to submit.

Wow, that is a nice Piniella. PSA shows only 2 9's and no 10's. I just picked up this one. It looks nice so I'm hoping for a 9. I have another to send in but it looks like about an 8.

In regards to the 1980 PHR set, I'm starting to notice which cards are tough that I thought I would share with you guys. So far, I've bought about 100 packs and about 40-50 complete sets. One that is really surprising me is the Pete Rose from that set. The card is constantly off center and never cut clean. It looks just like the regular 1980 card and the 1980 BK Phillies card but it is much much tougher than those two. I just checked the pop report and there is 4 8's, 0 9's and 0 10's so that proves my suspicion. This might wind up being one of the toughest Rose's out there. I just bought 35 sets from Kruk cards (which are really nice by the way), and while going through one after another of crap Rose's, there is was, bingo. A gorgeous Rose, it must be a freak of nature. Sharp corners and near perfect centering. I was beginning to think one didn't exist. Even in Michael Clum's set, which is #1 right now (not for long though), he only has a 7. I've yet to find one that even looked like an 8 before I found this one.

Another tough one is the Rod Carew, I haven't seen anything closely resembling a 9 on that one either. Also the Rollie Fingers was giving me problems too. A 9 doesn't exist yet in the Carew or the Fingers. Also, many of the cards at the end of the set and really tough too, but most of them are the commons from the set. I had the Pop 1 PSA 9 Brett until another one was recently graded. I still own the Pop 1 PSA 9 Reggie Jackson and I'm hoping that it stays that way for a while. A couple more tough ones are Don Baylor and George Foster. No 9's yet on those either.

I'll probably get to the point where I can see myself seriously overpaying for these cards if I can't eventually grade my own 9.

My grades just popped today. A lot of them are BK cards so I figured I would post it here. Overall a fair submission. A lot more 5,6, and 7's than I think was warranted but I can live with the 8's and higher on the BK's. I now have a BK Tigers complete set. The 80 BK Phillies was a little harsh with all 8's. Those were the best of the best that I had. The 81 Coca Cola's were a little tough too, but not bad. The 77 Topps Mexican Football all came out of PSA 8st holders so a 6,7,8,8 seems a bit weird. That tells me the were graded wrong the first time. The 82 Football Stickers were pack fresh and CRISPY mint. The more modern stuff was OK but I've done a lot better. The cards that really help me are most of the 9's on the BK's.

Oh yeah, and if you notice, the 78 BK Alan Trammell PSA 8 in this sub is the same PSA 6 that I posted here. It's sad that I have to pay grading fees twice to have it correctly graded when all the graders should be on the same page down there.

    Steve,
Congratulations on your grades! You did well on the Tigers. Do you have a Morris? I didn't see one in your submission.

I was hoping you'd have some more '77 BKs in your submission that I could trade for.

Enjoy! Thanks for keeping the BK thread going!

Yeah, I have the Morris in an 8 already. I used the BK cards to fill out the order to 100 cards and I had to choose which ones to submit so I went with the Tigers set for now. I usually submit stuff for resale and then I throw in a few for my collection. I REALLY wish I would have gotten a 9 on one of the 77 Reggie's. That means I have to buy a 9 off ebay or go with the 30 sets thing again through BBCExchange. I might try resubmitting one of them, they are nice Reggie's.

I was digging through the Pop Reports to check these BK sets. To show how really tough these cards are, I checked how many PSA 10's have been given for each set:

    1977 Yankees - 21
    1978 Yankees - 1 (Reggie Jackson)
    1978 Tigers - 0
    1978 Astros - 0
    1978 Rangers - 0
    1979 Phillies - 0
    1979 Yankees - 8
1980 Phillies - 1 (Pete Rose, that card has gotta be worth a small fortune)
    1980 PHR - 0 (out of about 300 submitted!)

I thought that 80 Phillies Rose card seemed kinda easy. I've gotten tons of nice ones from packs but as you can see, I wound up with 4 8's. Maybe tougher than I thought.

Any reason it is so easy to get a 10 for the '77s? Are they the only ones issued as vending?

I'll have to check out my other BK raw sets.

    Steve:

Interesting data, but a few thoughts stick out:

    A) Which of the BK sets are/were available by vending
    B) Are these cards simply hard in 10, or also hard in 9?
    C) What % of submissions are 9/10 or 8/9/10?
    D) For some of the lesser-known Burger King sets, is anyone actually grading these out? For example, on the Burger King Rangers, you have one collector who has graded out one set. Not really what I would call a critical mass in terms of sample size. The Phillies and Yankees sets seem to be most popular, but I expect that many more of these will pop out of the woodwork in high grade should anyone ever start to place a high value on them. Currently, the value of commons in PSA 8/9 really is quite limited to a small handful of collectors that will generally not pay a premium over the grading fees.

78 Tigers were only available in the cellophane packs - thus the crappy corners. I'm sure there is a Detroit PSA 10 out there somewhere waiting to be graded, but I haven't seen anything close. A lot of 9's are suspect in this set in my opinion because of centering issues.

  • The Burger King Tigers set is the greatest set ever. They were my first baseball cards. I can vividly remember the sunny day in 1978 when the Burger King employee gave me a pack with Jason Thompson on top because I told him he was my favorite player... he was his favorite, too.

Well. . .after some thought. . .I've decided to do a graded 1980 BK Pitch, Hit, & Run set. Ideally in all PSA9, but we'll see. I can never see doing a full-size (600+ card) regular-issue set again, but the 80 BK PHR set seems ideal for me - it's small, covers a sentimental card collecing year, and looks like it will be very challenging. So far, I'm all of 1 card in - a PSA9 Ryan I picked up a while ago.

As some of you know, my wife and I are relocating to Columbus, OH. We close on the new house tomorrow, and close on the sale of our old house at the end of the month. When things settle down, I'll begin this set in earnest image

Well, from what I've heard, the only ones issued in vending boxes were the 77 Yankees and the 79 Yankees, which makes sense on the 10's. Possibly the 80 PHR sets in vending also, but I'm not sure. As for the Rangers and Astros set, you are right. Not enough of them have been graded yet. But, I've been searching ebay for almost 2 years and I've never seen a box of Astros or Rangers for sale. They seem to be very rare. It's also hard to use a percentage yet on the 8/9/10 ratio since people are grading only the best of the best right now. When it gets up to 100 of each card graded, the % would be more accurate. Some cards I have gone through 50 examples to grade only 1 so the % would be screwed upwards as compared to mass grading. But, with only the finest examples being graded right now, the lack of 10's shows the difficultly.
  • that was my 1978 Reggie Jackson BK PSA 10 from a sub! Long since sold though.

I bought a raw set off eBay for the Nettles and wound up sending in Nettles, Munson and Jackson. Nettles and Munson came back 8's and I got a 10 on the Jackson.

Just wanted to show off a few purchases I made on Ebay. Gator broke his set up and I didn't want to pass on these.

    Auctions

I saw them all week and I kept debating on buying them. Then near the end, I noticed my main competition had bid on 2 of them. Well, I decided that I couldn't let that happen. Considering there is only 8 ever graded, 3 of them at once is a big chunk. I figured if anybody else bought these, I may never see them on the open market for years so I couldn't pass them up.

    Nice pick-ups.

I purchased a number of 1981 Topps Philadelphia Phillies PSA 10s from GATOR a few years ago, under the same premise, and I never have seen most of those again.

If only I could find the Phillies Burger King cards in as nice as shape.

I just bought a case of unopened 1980 Phillies Packs (over 4,000 cards). Hopefully there will be several 10s in there.
