Without The Collector...

...most coins would be face value or scrap metal or bullion items.
...there would be no coin investors. Why invest if no one is collecting? There would be bullion investors.
...there would still be the academic discipline of numismatics. What is put on a coin tells a lot about the society that minted it. What a coin is made of tells a lot about the society that minted it. Ancient coins are useful archeological artifacts.
BUT, collectors are not going away any time soon! There is evidence that even the ancient Greeks and Romans collected coins. We are carrying on an ancient and proud tradition!

People talk about selling everything and getting out, or selling all of their good stuff.
I've been dealing coins for 10 years, but I still collect. I have pieces that I have owned for over 30 years and have no intention of selling them. Are there others here who have held a large number of pieces for a decade or longer? It would be refreshing to hear from them.
<< <i>I have been collecting coins for close to 40 years and I have never sold a coin. Never even 1 coin. I have given away many many coins, but have sold none. >>
I wish I could say the same. I regret selling almost every coin I have ever sold, although it seemed like a good idea at the time!

... and those are the true wannabe's Bill. We've seen them before ... they come in good times, but many don't have the staying power. We've had a heck of a run ... I wonder how many will stay if the tide turns against the ever raising prices?
I started collecting as a young adult in 1987. Two bull markets, a bear and a long hibernation. I have sold a few things, but have mostly been a buyer. I regret a few of the ones I've sold, but mostly I sold the ones I later regretted buying, or no longer appreciated as much as the people I sold them to did. I didn't have much money then, and in comparison to some, don't have much now ... but I know that my collection includes coins from every year I have been collecting since ... and I don't expect that will change anytime soon. The colelction has slowly grown over time, and it has matured along the way ... just like me.
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”
