graded 64 could be a 65 though. Basing my grade on how soft these big coins are. Near impossible to get a mark free specimen, thus the forgiveness in grading.

You guys are smoking crack: that coin is way, way, way too nice for MS-64. My guess is MS-66. Remember, gold is very soft and is easily bagged up. PCGS is very lienient on gold, especially large gold coins.

It might be the scan, but the luster appears to be really subdued on this coin. Usually when I send in a very clean (NOT cleaned) gold coin with in minimum of marks, like this one, I get back no better than an MS-62. So I'm going to MS-62, although I might not give it more than an AU-58 myself if it looked this dull in person.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • I cannot get the sharpness on the scanner, The coin fields are clean, anny suggestion on getting a better depth on the photo.
    thx

That is one of the most unmarked $20 Libs I've ever seen.

It looks "flat" but maybe that's just the scan/image and not indicative of the coin itself. If the luster is there, 65 all day. If not, maybe 63.

Hardly any marks, but it does look dull.

    Still I'll give it a 65

  • The coin graded MS-65 (still waiting to get it in the mail)
NGC Population 2, with none higher
I wonder what is the PCGS population,
The pcgs price guide does not go up that high
How much do you think the book price for it should be..
    thx sam

image I won - thanks for your most generous giveaway. I 'll give the coin a good home

Edit - as far as what it is worth, I guess the answer is whatever you and the other guy would sell it for

These two statements seem to be incompatible with each other. You won't make any money on it until you sell it. image

  • Looks like a 64/65 to me. Is it graded?

Did anybody else notice that the title of the thread mentioned an 1871-S $20 Lib, but that the subject coin of this thread ia actually an 1891-S?? image
