BuffaloIronTailBuffaloIronTail Posts: 7,524 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was going through some of my coin pics and found this one. It's in an NGC holder. Grade? Comments?image

I'll post the grade tomorrow. It is a 1924-S GRADE POSTED: NGC XF-40

  • Nice circ 24-D. XF40; suffers a bit from a typically weak strike, fatiguing dies.

  • I reckon I'm blind and can't read, as it's a 24-S, but the same goes for grade, strike, etc.

Maybe it's the pic, but the obverse looks acid-dipped to me. Looks to be in the F 12- F 15 range. It won't bring VF $ regardless of the grade due to the incomplete horn (been there, done that).

VF25 As most all seen in a VF holder. No tip of the horn showing.

    NGC will grade this XF-40

    PCGS will grade this VF30

That's my story and I'm sticking to it image

20, but I'm not good at strike/wear differences on buffalos.

  • hard to tell from the picture. I think its an F-12, but I bet NGC gave it a VF-20 because its a 24-s
  • at least a 30 and possibly a 40 (depending on what kinda mood the graders were in).

XF40. Not uncommon for them to give that to less than a full horn.

Thank you for all the replies, and here's the grade:

    NGC XF-40.

I would not have thought it was that high, but judging from some of you, you've already figured out the "strike vs. wear" thing.

The coin looks horrible, yet it does exhibit overall XF wear.........horn notwithstanding!!!

There is a hint of mint luster, and LIBERTY is bold and far from merging with the rim.

I would NOT pay XF money for this coin....personally.

    Thanks for playing......

Without reading down to the other responses, and without knowing if a weak horn is typical for the date, my first instinct was Fine-15. If weakly struck coins with incomplete horns are the norm for this date, I would revise that to VF-25.

Even knowing that nowadays a full horn isn't technically necessary for VF grades and above, it's difficult for me to get past my Red Book-instilled biases when grading early Buffaloes.

This coin has very little wear but I would still give it a F15 because of the horn tip. Per Lang - many of these coins went straight fom BU to Fine because of poor strike detail. He states they should be graded as such. No horn tip = not VF!

    With that said I think;

    NGC VF35 (maybe higher)

    PCGS VF20

    I don't buy many NGC buffalo's

<<To give you some idea the 1918/17 D with a Full Horn on the reverse is worth about $3,000.>>

    image How about $6k+

<<The 1937 D 3 leg with 3/4 of the horn showing goes for about $350.>>

imageimage I'll take 10 at 2x that price.

mercurydimeguy; I accidently posted an old response (and edited it off) . I agree that pricing was form the good old days (actually only about 2 years ago). Your right about the current values!

So what is the grade of this coin????
