Some beautiful Philippine toners....

Courtesy of a friend who lucked in to a little stash of these. All graded PCGS MS66-67 and the first two in particular are among the most wildly colored coins I've ever seen. All have blazing luster and I'm not sure how they were stored but there's no doubt in my mind that they're completely real. Mother Nature works in mysterious ways sometimes.

Very nice coins! I especially like the second one.
  • Well, I see I lucked out. I bought those in Manila for $5 each. I didn't even look to see how they'd grade, they were so beautiful, I just grabbed up all the pretty ones.

And they slabbed at MS 66 and 67! Sheeesh.

Jon: I promised these people a give-away when I hit 500 posts. I've hit that now.

Why don't you take one of these pretty coins and make that the give away for a drawing? One week from when you post the pictures to enter. Then I'll put all the names in jar and let Supunsa pick out the winner.

    Warm regards,

About 2 months ago, we were at my wife's grandfather's house. They are cleaning it out and my wife was there to pick out some furniture
she would like to have. Her grandfather was in the Phillipines during WWII. While we were looking through things (it was like going back in time), we came across a box of Phillipine coins from the 40's. I believe they were 10 and 20 centavos. They were all absolutley beautifully toned beyond description. I never realized how small some of the Phillipne coinage is, but they were tiny little toned gems. Since her grandfather obviously brought these coins back from the War, they held special meaning to my wife. She brought the coins to her father, who immediately said "i got to clean these up". I tried and tried to tell him not clean them, but he kept saying "Na, I'll clean them just a little"

There is something about Philippine coins that makes me want to have them included with US coins.

They are beautiful, many were minted in the US mints, I truely love these coins.
  • Just a beautiful group of coins with amazing color.......................very lucky man!!!! image

Wow, that is amazing and always cool. And if you do have a giveaway, it will be a very generous one. image
  • Technically, all US-Philippine issues were made in U S Mints. The Manilla Mint was a branch of the US Mint. It was destroyed in the waning days of WW II and has never been restored to its pre-war condition; however, I've heard that the present Philippine government has plans to restore it and make it the National Museum

  • Thank you, Mr. Coin Addict, and Cosmic Debris: they are gorgeous and awesome. When I saw them, I bought them even knowing I had a roll of purty, shiny ones lying around somewhere or another.

Well Ecos: I'll see them in December when I travel to the states. Jon says several are the interesting D/D variety so I gotta sort 'em out.

"Thanks. I wish they were mine." Dear Tone Lover: One of 'em is now.

Thank you pharmer: I can see from your spectacular logo that you love coins like this, too. Do you collect them like that or did you just phall into that one?

Dear Coin Freak 599, Shamika, and Casey; Thank you!

Dear NWCS: Can I imagine that toning on an 06-S Peso? No! One long-time collector in the Philippines spent a lifetime buying up every single 06-S he could find, regardless of the condition. And he liked them shiny. So he cleaned 'em. He's dead now, and his hoard has been slowly sold in to the market. That's why there are so many cleaned AUs, XFs, VFs, and Fs. An 06-S in 65, looking as purty as one of these would be a $200,000 coin.

That would be a coin worth saving up for.

    Thank you Clankeye!

More later. Breakfast beckons. Warm regards from Bangkok!

    Just having fun

I've always liked Philippine coins. I used to have quite a few but now only have 3 or 4. trying to find nice ones in my area is hard.
