  • Win, that article from Diamondmind is a good read on defense too. Zone rating that they talk about is the best defensive measurement. That is going a little deeper than Baseball prospectus rating. In the end, the lists won't differ too much. Jeter will still be below average. Anyone would be very hard pressed to put him at the top (career wise at least). He was a little higher this year!

Great article from si.com that highlights how bad a lot of the gold glove winners actually are:

    Link

"Once a player reaches Gold Glove status, he usually stays atop that mountain, barring injury or a bad slump at the plate, whether he deserves the award or not. (Even though it's a defensive award, being a good hitter keeps your name in the spotlight and in the voters' minds.) Rafael Palmeiro was the AL's Gold Glove first baseman in 1997 and '98. But in 1999, when he played all of 28 games in the field, Palmeiro became the first player to bring home a Gold Glove and the Outstanding Designated Hitter Award in the same season."

  • Yeah, that Palmeiro debacle puts a Gold Glove's credibility in serious jeopardy.

The Rawlings Gold Glove Award as been awarded annually since 1957 for fielding excellence. The award was originally given based on a vote by sportswriters. The next year, players were given the right to vote. Finally, in 1965, the vote was switched to coaches and managers. The coaches and managers continue to vote today.

Skip I did a google search and all say the same thing.

unless I am reading this one wrong ..............but it says "SWITCHED"

The awards, presented since 1957 by Rawlings, are voted on by managers and coaches. The voters may not select players on their own teams, and can vote only for players in their own league.

    another..................

The Gold Glove Award was announced by the Rawlings Sporting Goods Co. on Oct. 2, 1957. A panel of sportswriters was chosen to choose the major leagues' outstanding defensive player at each position. In 1958, an award was given for each position in each major league, with players doing the voting. Managers and coaches have selected the Gold Glove teams since 1965, with the provision that they can't vote players from their own teams. Each winner receives a glove or mitt made of gold-finished leather, mounted on a hardwood stand with an engraved plate bearing the player's name, position, team, and year of the award.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Man, I am almost certain of hearing instances(recent) of players just voting for who they know, or not even bothering to vote. Maybe coaches were ADDED instead of switched. Even that recent MLB article says "voted upon by players, coaches etc.." I was always told that the players have a vote. Anybody want to do some investigative reporting?

I may be thinking of the Silver Slugger awards?

From MLBs website, regarding 2005 winners:

"In the eyes of AL managers and coaches who participated in the voting for the award emblematic of defensive excellence since 1957, these guys were gold."

  • Skinny,

You could just admit you were wrong instead of turning this in to a big investigation. Really, it's no big deal to be wrong sometimes.
  • dg, I have no problem admitting I'm wrong. Memory plays tricks on everyone, me included. That's why we write things down so we don't forget. By the looks of it, I see the same thing Winpitcher sees(everywhere I check).

I also checked Silver Slugger, and that is a coaches award too. So now I don't know what the heck I was recalling.

  • I believe that's called a "senior moment"
