Anybody collect gold commems anymore?

Excuse the spam, but I am selling a 1903 McKinley G$1 from my collection and its ending tonight and its way too low. A pccgs ms64 just went for over $1500 and this one is at barely a third of that. So basically, somebody on the board might be able to pick this one up at a price.

I'm surprised this coin is so low, I know there might be 12 snipes locked and loaded but then again maybe not. Is the market for these types of coins weak?

Thanks.

NCG MS64

    kalch,

I am going to be brutally honest.

I like US gold coins but I have never even heard of these $1 gold commems.

It is small. So small, I think that turns off a lot of collectors.

It's design is pretty boring, if not ugly.

I simply think there is very little demand.

I think to myself, it is a nice coin, but I have no interest in it for 1000 bucks.

    how many were minted?

I theoretically collect gold commems (classic ones, that is -- already got most of the moderns) -- but my collection currently sits at *0*, and without a cash infusion is likely to remain there for some years to come.

    FC,

If this was my favorite coin it wouldnt be on Ebay....

That being said It was designed by Barber and only 17,500 pieces were produced. Also, I think it's kind of neat that it features McKinley on it, especially since it was minted right after his assasination.

The grading on these coins runs all over the board, especially in NGC holders. Sorry, but I could not place a strong bid on a coin like this without seeing it.

These coins are small and hard to photograph. To be candid with you, your photos don't tell me a lot about the grade. And it's minor, but you would have helped your cause if you had rotated the reverse photo by 180 degrees. Showing the coin upsidedown does not help you sell it.

The really important shots are close-up of the coin, not the slab. If you can get closer with your camera, you will get better images and probably better bids.

And some coins just drop throug the cracks. A few years ago I bid on a PCGS MS-64 graded 1849 open wreath, gold dollar on eBay that I had seen in a local dealer's inventory. The coin was nice, but when the bidding was over I won it for $1,400 against a Gray Sheet bid of $2,200. The dealer could not have been pleased, but despite the fact that he was an eBay regular, he did not get good action on the coin, and it went cheap.

Your comments are fair enough. I just figured that with commems like these a 64 is a 64 and the holder pretty much tells the story.

On another note, whats the deal with private listings (hididng the bidders identity). I used to think it was a bad practice but then I read on a post entitled "Why isnt this coin selling? He's done everything right." When I see bidders identity hidden it make me wary of shilling. Are there benefits?

    1) Has PCGS in the title
    2) Has MS70 in the title
    3) Keeps the user ID of bidders hidden
    4) Offers FREE SHIPPING
    5) Quotes the PCGS Price Guide of $5,000

It gets back to an often used phrase here, "Buy the coin, not the holder." The holder does mean something, but the coin is what counts.

    Excuse the spam.................

there was probably a way around "spamming" the wrong forum while pleading for forgiveness. you ought to delete the thread contents and avoid doing it in the future, it's the one violation that seems to be universally understood, except by you.

Not me, the surfaces aren't reactive enough. I'll stick to my so-called "tarnished" silver.imageimage

With such tiny pictures you will likely only get sight unseen bids. All you have right now is a couple of bidders who like to keep bidding each other up time after time. Had you cropped out the white holder and shown the coin far larger you would have made at least $100 for you efforts. Your pictures make me think you are hiding an ungly coin.

I think the snipers will get you pretty close to that $1500 because the bluesheet is right there on this coin.JMHO

Yes, I do collect the gold Classic Commems.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
