Cardinal Playoff Thread We're done

Big game being able to score like that off Peavy. Great game for Reggie Sanders setting an NLDS record with 6 rbi's hope he stays hot all though the playoffs! Carpenter wasn't dominant but got the job done which was nother positive sign. They had to make it exciting at the end but we'll take it.

The only thing that worries me is the bullpen. We almost gave it away. Now, the Pads have a little confidence. We should have slammed the door shut, but we didn't. Great game, otherwise. Sanders crushed that ball! Pujols should have gotten a hit instead of an error too!

Yah, it would be nice if Reyes hadn't gotten hurt, but we had to have our annual October injury.

Man, I was there today and walking out of Busch Stadium, the vibe was like a virtual loss. Nice to win Game 1, but we're going nowhere if that's all the pen can muster. Izzy was putrid, but I guess it's almost a given that he's going to put at least the tying run on each appearance.

Dang, sure the pen sucked but that's going to happen. We beat Peavy and that is huge no matter what the pen did.

Wow Peavy is done for the season now. Broke a rib and they don't even know when he did it, that's crazy.

But that can't happen. Not at this point.

After Reggie's slam people were going nuts and I said to my buddy how demoralized San Diego must be that their ace got rocked for 8 runs in less than 5 innings. But by the end of the game, almost all the confidence of Cardinal Nation was gone. I'm still pretty sure that we can beat San Diego, especially if Peavy is finished, but today's game really exposed the Cardinals' Achilles heel. I hope I'm overreacting, but the mood after the game among most fans was anything but festive.

LaRussa will figure out something to do in the pen, we could afford to have them beat up a little today hopefully they just relaxed too much. I can't believe that Morris is going in game 3 instead of Suppan. Supps was lights out down the stretch and our best pitcher last year in the postseason.
  • yawie99yawie99 Posts: 2,575 ✭✭✭
I'd much rather see Suppan go in Game 3 too. Morris is the one guy I worry about most. Heck, I'd almost rather see Marquis in the postseason rotation than Morris.

  • frankhardyfrankhardy Posts: 8,097 ✭✭✭✭✭
I WOULD rather see Marquis than Morris. I don't know why Suppan isn't starting game three. I guarantee you that Morris will give up about three home runs. SD will probably score 4 runs in the first inning, and the Cards will be playing catch from then on.

I agree with you yawie. I was pretty excited until the bullpen stunk up the place.

I really think that if the Cardinals can get past the Astros, then they will be passing out WS rings on opening day. The Astros are really the only team that bothers me. I would love to see a Cardinals/Yankees series! That would be awesome! Pujols vs A Rod!

That's pretty funny. My friend and I said almost the same thing at the game yesterday, except we said it'd be 5 first-inning runs.

They've said Marquis will be the game four starter. I don't get it, Marquis pitched well down the stretch but Suppan did the whole second half.
  • CardsFanCardsFan Posts: 1,093 ✭✭✭
Great game by Mulder, I think he pitched better after taking the line drive off his arm.
  • yawie99yawie99 Posts: 2,575 ✭✭✭
I was worried about him starting during the day, but I thought he pitched great, giving the team a bit of an emotional lift after that second inning too. Bullpen wasn't great - well, Tavarez mainly - but it was nice to see Izzy get the job done without first loading the bases. I don't think this series will be coming back to St. Louis.

I don't think so either. Plus I'd like to see Carpenter get some extra rest.

Y'all gonna stay up late for the game Saturday night? I will probably take an evening nap in order to stay up and watch it. It's ridiculous to start a game that late on a Saturday. If they would just schedule both AL games one day, and both NL games the other day, they wouldn't have this problem.

Really? I hadn't noticed the TV schedule. I'm sure I'll watch - I'm a night owl anyway - but it does stink that TV pretty much drives so much of the sports world.

I'll be out of town visiting some relatives so the late start is good that way I can make sure we're back in front of a tv by 10.
  • frankhardyfrankhardy Posts: 8,097 ✭✭✭✭✭
With Gemmy 10 starting 27 different useless threads in one single evening, I thought I might bump this thread to the top. Cards go for the sweep tonight. I say the Cards will win 13 to 9 with Morris and Woody pitching. It should be a high scoring game.

I actually celebrated last night when the Red Sox lost. I disliked them way before last year too.

I'm normally very superstitious about these things, but go ahead and make it "3 down, 8 to go," CardsFan. Morris looks suprisingly good so far. Knock on the proverbial wood.

Good gawd! There goes the shutout. DO NOT let me post anymore mid-game.

Morris did pitch pretty well last night - a lot better than expected. Izzy about blew it again. I hope maybe Walt Jocketty will go out and get someone like Billy Wagner. Could you imaging having Izzy as a set up man, and having Wagner closing it out!

Looks like the Braves are going to win game 4. I hope the Braves pull it off.

Hey, maybe now the games will be scheduled when people can actually watch the games!!

I was hoping for that so that neither team could set their starters, but oh well bring on Pettitte!

I'm not one to talk smack about my team but I will say this...

If I were you, I would be VERY concerned about the 'Stros.

While we don't have Beltran, Kent, or Bagwell (pinch hitting only) in our line-up, this team has heart. I know heart doesn't put runs on the board but this team is so special. Clemens coming back for Bags and Biggio, starting the season 15-30, Clemens' mother passing, injuries left and right...

This year was written off long ago (June 1st Chronicle Article). Everything we are doing now is just gravy image

Good luck and may the best team win.

Definitely, that's why I wanted the Braves series to go 5. Last year's series was nerve racking and I don't expect this year to be any different.

I agree except I want the outcome to tbe different image

Thankfully the next game isn't till Wednesday. Gives Clemens ample time to rest from today's 44 pitch GEM on two day's rest image

I'm sure we'll go with Pettitte, Clemens, Oswalt, and Backe (if needed).

I am very concerned about this series and would certainly have rather been facing the Braves. Hopefully there'll be a Houston letdown after today's epic win.

Oh, believe me, we are very concerned. But, let's turn that around. Astros fans should be concerned as well. Last year, we beat Houston with Jeff Suppan and Woody Williams being the top starters. This year, we have Carp and Mulder. It ought to be pretty exciting!

We also had Munro as our 4th starter, so I would guess Pettitte is a decent upgrade image

Hopefully it will be a great series just as last year... Can only hope for a different outcome.

I know that the regular season means nothing now, but I think the Cardinals had a pretty good record against the Astros Big 3. Like I said, most Cards fans would rather be playing the Braves and their erratic-at-best bullpen, but people are still optimistic without being overly confident. I think the Cards will win in 6.

  • CardsFanCardsFan Posts: 1,093 ✭✭✭
Pettitte was the one who really pitched well against us so the Stros being able to set up their pitching before the series really hurt. We've always hit Oswalt well especially this year. If our bullpen can hold up I like the Cards in 5 or 6 also. I'd rather not see a game 7, that's way too stressful.

Did anybody hear the Dan Patrick Show today?

Ok, we all know how guys like Dan Patrick, and the rest of the Eastern Sports Programming Network, hardly ever give the Cardinals any credit. Today on his show, Dan interviewed Rick Sutcliffe and Dan said something like this, "So, Rick, which team do you like to win the World Series taking into account last year and how close some teams got? Do you like the Astros because they got so close last year? The Angels because they got bounced in the first round last year? Or what about the Yankees after the Red Sox came back on them last year? Which team Rick?"

Notice that the Cardinals were not even in the question.

Here is Rick's reply. "I'll tell you who Dan - the Cardinals without question." Then Rick goes into something that I didn't realize. He said that the Cardinals arrived in Boston last year tired and worn out. They had just taken the Astros in 7 and had to be in Boston the next day for media day. (I believe that is what he said.)

Then Dan Patrick said this (and I quote), "Rick, are you a Cardinals fan?"

Rick replies, "No! ! I am however an Albert Pujols fan."

In other words, Mr Patrick asked Rick Sutcliffe if he was a Cardinals fan, I guess, because only Cardinals fans would've picked the Cardinals.

That ticked me off a little. Now that I got that off my shoulders, I'm ok!!

There's still a few at ESPN picking the Cards, I do like to see that many of the experts have jumped on the Houston bandwagon, which is usually not a good thing. I don't think anyone is overlooking the Cardinals as much as it's just not going out on a limb to pick them and they are trying to make a statement.

Reggie comes through, Izzy makes it interesting... once again.
  • yawie99yawie99 Posts: 2,575 ✭✭✭
Interesting, for sure, but that was kind of a flukey flare that Eckstein helped turn into a larger threat. I'll cut Izzy a little slack tonight. Great win for the Cards!

Yah, beating Pettitte was big. Let's hope Mulder's arm shows no ill effects from the line drive tomorrow.

Good win, STL. Isringhausen was getting some very low "strikes" called in the 9th. I hope if we have the lead in the 9th and Lidge comes in, we get the same calls image

Well, the next three games are in Houston, and the Astros have GREAT pitching. We shall see.

Does Larry Walker know the playoffs have started?

Seriously, the worst thing about tonight is that it was eerily reminiscent of last year's World Series: missed opportunities, miscues, shoddy bullpen, though I guess Tavarez's performance didn't really matter much. I still feel pretty good about the series, but obviously would've felt much better going to Houston up 2-0. Even if we come home down 3-2, I think we'll be OK.

We will bench Edmonds if you will bench Brad Lidge!!!!!!!!

I hate seeing that guy come in. He has some filthy stuff!

How about Jason Marquis though? I came in and shut them down. I really like him in the middle relief for the rest of the playoffs.
